I wonder if anyone is interested in the here and now?

An interesting few hours as the low over Eire tracks towards the N Sea. Just what will be the exact track-where will get the worst of the rain-which high ground will get snow-will it lie? All these and folk seem obsessed with day x-y-z. Nothing wrong with that but some lucky ones will see snow today over northern England. I think the track of the low, judging from the latest data I can get hold of, suggests it wil exit somewhere between Bridlington and Newcastle into the N Sea. Another 2-3 hours and that widish idea should be able to refine somewhat.

As to the longer term, no matter which model you use, the end result will be the same, no major upper air pattern change for at least two weeks. So much of the same with perhaps a tendency to edge the overall temperature down a bit. As to a white Xmas well timing will be crucial for any short burst of Pm air to that. Not impossible for some, but, on current evidence, more likely the further north one lives and the higher up as well.

for immediate watching a link to the weather chart for today

on my pc this morning it is a bit slow to load.

Haha, just what I was thinking. Rain is changing over to snow here at 60m asl, must be turning white on the hills by now.

For me the contrast across the country is the talking point, overnight we could see up to 20c difference between parts of Scotland and Cornwall.  Even by day we'll see 10c+ difference.  So charts being posted targeting super mild aren't telling the current story for all UK, lots more going on; yep I'm stuck in the grip mild mush but I'm really fascinated by the contrasts .

This is feature worth keeping an eye on, look at that little bump near Wales....more heavy rain heading to the wrong place?

Spot on there. Yes temps have been above average most of the time so far this winter up here but nothing exceptional, seen many many spells of much milder weather over the years! I love the cold and snow but on the other side of the coin I wouldn't mind the higher temps those further south experience, would make my cycling less of a chore!

Car needed a good ice scraping yesterday and today is also cold, hopefully not long before we see some of the white stuff! As others have said, GFS hinting at a colder set up for Christmas.

Following screenshot from the weather app on my phone tells the story of most of this whole years temps. Huge difference north to south in England alone.

  3. I spent the last week of July in Northumberland. It was nice to have a break from the constantly warm, sunny, stormless and uneventful weather down here and to experience something more interesting (13C maxima, windy, cloudy and rainy). Warm and sunny all the time gets boring very quickly.

Cold and cloudy gets boring very quickly too, we've had it all spring and summer!!

Today sums it up, watching Ride London, 27 n sunny, BBC weather app for here, 16 and raining!!

Hoping for an improvement, can't stay so poor for ever.

  4. It was supposed to be a dry day here also but after a reasonable morning had continuous rain between 11.30 and 15.30,summer 2015 continues !!

For once it looks like we've missed out on the rain, lots of sunny spells though windy. Temp got to 18.6, almost average!

  5. I was in Newcastle yesterday and had no rain when I came back on the train it was raining in the Birtley area then closer to Durham it was dry and sunny

Back to now not a cloud in the sky over Darlo a lovely evening a bit fresher in the shade but a light jumper is all thats needed

You were very lucky then! We were also in Newcastle Wednesday and got wet running to the museum! It got even heavier later at home and the radar showed some intense rain falling over some parts.

Yesterday had some pleasant sunshine with light winds but cold again, 15c max in sunshine end of July is cold no matter how you dress it up. And 15 is the 'warmest' it had been for days. My grass has just about stopped growing, never had to cut it so infrequently but thats a good thing!

  6. Anything below 14C is quite rare here in July. Today, the temperature was 12-13C during much of the day but a brief brighter period lifted the temperature to 15.1C (which often happens in summer).

Its all still a long way from the max of 12.8C on 8th July 2004. That was the July coldest maxima here by some way.

Amazing difference over a short distance. We've beat your lowest max several times this July and at the end of the month too!

  7. Drizzly  here and was only10.6C a few minutes ago.

It really is quite hard to believe it can be so cool in what should be the warmest week or two of summer.

It's not unheard of to struggle around 10C during a rain event with a Low in the North Sea, but now it's just cold and damp, with a light northerly drift, brief brighter interludes barely have any effect

No figures to back it up just my memory but the number of days in May with max temp in single digits is increasing and now June this year had a number of days max temp in single digits, more than I can ever remember. Given how cold this July has been I'm thinking we may see a single digit July max in the next few summers. Arctic.

  8. I was up near Durham today and it was almost raw to start the day with a strong and gusty wind. Even when the sun did come out it did very little to help the temperature. However back home i find out we have hit a reasonable 21c and even now, at gone 8pm it feels warmer than id did at any time up there. What a difference being at sea level and 100 miles further south makes.

    Haha, never a truer word!

It's been gale force here for 2 day's now, this afternoon mostly cloudy and 16 degrees!! If it was a one off fair enough but most of the summer has been poor and I am just above sea level. BBC app for next 9 day's forecasts 16-18 degrees bar 1 day of 19. For Stanley, 200 mts asl 14-16 degrees for next 9 day's yet I keep reading how the summer has had lots of 'useable' weather! Useable for what?

Dress it up how you want but it's been a cold late spring and summer so far and no sign of change.

  9. Why anyone would wish to be under a big storm is just plain mad to me. Perfectly summed up by tonight's supercell as it tore through Sacriston.

Huge hailstones, cars damaged, lights smashed, houses damaged and undoubtedly thousands of pounds of insurance damage to pay out, which we all have to pay for. Not to mention the damage done to wildlife.

Be careful what you wish for.

  10. Yet the CET isn't that much below average, and will most likely end up around average. Have we just become accustomed to warmer months?

Nothing like average here, it's cold. Big improvement on the last few days though, temp has hit 15C!!!!!!! Still cloudy and windy though!

  11. Dreadful isn't it, I'm sorry, the UK has the worst weather in the world. Being a runner too, if it's not raining it's windy..constantly windy. Someone turn the fan off!!

I like my cycling and the almost constant cold and wind this year doesn't make you want to head on out!

  12. After a few pleasant days last week it's back to the usual rubbish.

Temp has struggled to 13C, is it really second half of June, cloudy and windy. Story of the spring and summer so far bar a few day's here and there.

I think you'd have to go up to the arctic to find weather so cold in May and June at sea level. Many day's of either single figures or 13C or less as max's!!

    Need it to warm up!!
