  1. Very foggy to start but now lovely out there with just some high cloud spoiling the show. Calm conditions and 8c.
  2. You hate Scottish weather at times, 99% cloud cover to the North but in that 1% clearance you can see that there is a stonking aurora ongoing.
  3. A most acceptable day with some decent spells of sunshine in the early afternoon. Bit warmer than off late with a max of 10c and calm conditions - see the aurora alerts have been going off all afternoon so fingers crossed for some clear skies this evening. Some nice cloudscapes earlier...
  4. Finally some sunshine today, albeit very hazy and all too brief. Dry bar a short and very sharp shower at 7pm . Cool though, max of 8c and currently 4.8c with banks of mist drifting around in the very light NW wind. Decent evening for the fireworks display at Banchory, though overcast conditions negating any chance of seeing the aurora on the way back home...
  5. Another very soggy and cool day (max 8c) with light NE winds. Glad to see the Met Office app showing no appreciable rain for the next week. That will hopefully let things dry out, been a long time since the ground was this sodden. Anecdotally there seem to be a lot fewer geese flying over compared to previous years - different flight routes or just sick of the rain and off to more pleasant pastures?!
  6. Very foggy start to the day and temperatures below freezing (-0.9c min), so a lot cooler than forecast (Met had a low of 4c). Fog cleared by 9am and even some blue sky... That lasted all of 5 seconds as now totally overcast with spits of rain in the light NE wind. Cold at 4.8c currently.
  7. Two fair days then crashing back to the soggy autumn dross. Heavy rain just now, light easterly winds and a chilly 7c. First Scandinavian/Eastern European visitors of the season, a flock of c.30 Fieldfares descended on this Rowan and stripped it completely of berries in just a couple of hours...
  8. Vile day yet again. Heavy rain in banchory just now, 8.5c and a keen Easterly wind. Kids decided they are emigrating...
  9. Vile day, cool with frequent pulses of heavy rain. Everything waterlogged, so far enough dry periods to prevent a repeat of last weeks flooding.
  10. Very soggy morning in Aberdeenshire with constant rain until around Keith when heading over to Inverness. Over in strathnairn, dry but completely overcast with light winds, car thermometer reading a constant 10c. Dunlichity church looking as quaint as ever, sad to see its no longer used and do wonder who maintains it now.
  11. Well an entertaining few days of wind and rain. For the immediate area round here we dodged a bullet thanks to the lengthy dry spell Friday Morning/Afternoon and, more critically, a 2 hour gap in the rain between c.1-3pm today. Both allowed the local streams to lower sufficiently that, when the next pulse of prolonged rain came in, it wasn't on long enough to cause maximum flooding. Going by what was seen down by Sauchen, flooding not as bad as last November's flooding - though bad enough to cause some serious road flooding like this... However, just a few miles away in a neighbouring stream catchment area the flooding was something else, like this on the A944 next to Loch of Skene. Always amazes how things can change over just a short distance. Clear skies outside now and cold with it, 2.9c with light winds.
  12. In end the flooding here was not as bad as the 18th Nov flood last year. A lot down to the fact that the rain eased off a lot during the night - a few more hours of rain like we had in the evening and its would have been a different story. A944 was still blocked for a time in the morning, even the parts open were a tad dicey.. Wind damage more noticeable though, fact a lot of the trees were still in full leaf would have played a part as will have the unusual wind direction, example of damage up at Castle Fraser... Dry during the day with even a few glimpses of the sun, that strong wind there all day making things feel cold. Wind picking up again this evening and bringing with it some sporadic pulses of heavy rain, time will tell if the flooding reappears tomorrow.
  13. Deeply unpleasant out there. Had to make a quick jaunt out to help a friend and the A944 around Sauchen/Dunecht is badly affected with surface flooding and branches galore on the road. See the fields are starting to flood upstream of the bridge next to the junction to Sauchen so touch and go for the A944 to be flooded there in the morning (just as it was last November). Just as well the weather apps are now firming up on a lengthy dry spell tomorrow before the next deluge on Saturday.
  14. Now that is a classic rain shadow effect from a SE flow... Horrible outside but so far the local streams have stayed within their banks. See they have issued flood warnings for Kemnay and Inverurie with rest centres being opened up to accomodate people affected. Storm Babet - Aberdeenshire Council WWW.ABERDEENSHIRE.GOV.UK
  15. Watching the rain radar really surprised how quickly the band of rain is moving north - the automated forecasts don't seem to have taken this into account. For example Auchterarder should be having heavy rain - radar suggests its now dry. Wind causing the most problems round here with trees coming down and power cuts - fubar news good source of up to date reports... https://www.facebook.com/FubarNews
  16. It's wet and windy but so far nothing out of the ordinary. The rainfall intensity that was forecast is not there - so far... Just as well as Aberdeenshire council have already run out of sandbags and have no intention of replenishing them. 17. Going to be a entertaining few days ahead. Today was mainly overcast with spits of rain in the wind off and on. Feeling milder than of late with the wind steadily increasing all day, now gusty enough to be blowing of small branches driving round Kemnay area just now. Weather apps keep changing about how much rain will fall over the next three days - they were initially bullish about there being a pronounced dry spell during Friday before rain returning Saturday. That certainty not there now. That will make a difference in the flooding chances immediately round here. With the soils relatively thin and impermeable granite/metamorphic bedrock the streams are pretty "flashy" in nature, reacting quickly to variations in rainfall - without that break on Friday real chance for some major flooding round here. Odds on for the A944 to be closed in the usual places. Kids not impressed with their planned cinema trip on Friday being postponed - "they always exaggerate these warnings", what cynicism at such a young age...
  18. Showery day, though warmer than yesterday, currently 9c. Winds a lot lighter as well. Unusual for a weather warning to be issued so far in advance, heavy rain Thursday through Saturday, one to watch...
  19. A proper winter feeling day. Strong NW wind for most of the day blowing in some hefty showers in the afternoon, some sleet seen in one of those whilst visiting Inverurie; max of 7c and now 2c outside. Plenty of sunshine in the morning, local farmer cutting silage at the moment, don't ever recall it being made this late in the year and a testament to the recent mild conditions... And to think this field was only sown a couple or so weeks ago... Great visibility today..
  20. Lots of sunshine but feeling cold out of the sunshine thanks to a strong and gusty WNW wind. Currently 11c so a good 5c cooler than yesterday. Good day for cutting the grass, still needing cutting every fortnight which goes to show how mild it has been.
  21. A strong SW wind - but a very mild one, currently 16c and feeling warm especially when the sun breaks through.
  22. Good to finally see the sun again after the weekend deluge. Thanks to some lengthy dry interludes in the rain event during Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning, the local burns here mainly stayed within their banks. Much warmer today (already 13c) compared to the 5-7c range that typified the weekend. Water table absolutely saturated though so fingers crossed no heavy rain in the next few days to allow that to lower a bit.
  23. Steady rain up until 1pm then a gradual clearance from the NW to some blue skies by teatime. A few showers going about this evening allowing some rainbow activity just before dusk... Nice sunset to end the day... Another mild day with a max of 14c with generally light winds.
  24. A stiff SW wind but what a cracking start to October. Lengthy sunny spells and 19c, feeling warm in that sun especially with some shelter from the wind.
  25. A bit of flooding in the usual places on the roads around Kemnay and Kintore just now - unsurprising as some torrential downpours this evening. Wind picking up noticeably in the last 30mins, was inconsequential up to then. Now consequential as its blown over one of the portable greenhouses - just as well it was only filled with the kids outdoor shoes (had enough of the mud and other mess they were bringing into the house!). Mild though, 14c going by the car thermometer.
