  1. Had a deep covering of snow 12-15cm worth from the 17th/18th Dec 2010 event I have a vague memory of icicles hanging off the roof at Xmas and huge snowflakes from that event in what was an historic month to say the least - Merseyside in particular got absolutely hammered. In the meantime I'm having to go all the way to Michigan via YouTube to get my snowfix!
  2. A very mild but dark & dreary day today. Volatile models at the moment much more so than usual at this range, Xmas & where we might be heading into the New Year as clear as mud A windy if not stormy Thursday-Saturday period shaping up however - another named Storm likely.
  3. Warning is for east Cumbria into NE England not for the vast majority of the region by the looks of things. Bright start has clouded over in the past hour or so, mild. Very mild tomorrow 14/15c possible before trending down temps wise to around average or just above up until Xmas, some further wind warnings might be a possibility though later in the week. Xmas itself might be more seasonal but lots of uncertainty currently and we could easily trend on the milder side of things sadly.
  4. Gosh so much drama in the mad thread - I get it though as Xmas often adds an even more emotional dynamic to the desire for colder winter weather. My punt would be for a seasonal day around 5-8c any ‘proper’ cold arriving into January. Off out for a Chinese & Xmas drinks tonight so the models could be showing a raging Bartlett for Xmas Day on the 18z and I wouldn’t be bothered (jinxed it now ) - have an enjoyable Saturday night all
  5. Sunnier than expected/ forecast by some today - mild with it too. Mild winter weather often is wet, stormy or dull so today’s sunshine is pleasant enough although hopefully something more seasonal on the way for Xmas week even if it does alternate with milder weather, a cold spell in January perhaps one to watch for too? Happy Saturday all
  6. Very Cheshire Gap chart that one - Peaks doing very well but south of Stoke/ North Staffs not seeing much with a sharp drop off in snow amounts. Only issue for IMBY would be that a WNW’ly flow that would favour N Cheshire & Gtr MCR more like it did in Dec 2009 - a covering here but a good few inches Macclesfield northwards. A scenario like Dec 2017 though putting the North Midlands (and in turn S Cheshire) more in the firing line via the Cheshire Gap too. The good thing in a set up like this is that the NW as a whole will do well for wintry precipitation- higher ground most likely to hit the jackpot but all levels likely to see some snow at some point. Lots to keep an eye on as we move closer to the Festive season proper
  7. Interesting MO long range update hints at potential cold shots from the NW/ N both next week and perhaps over the Xmas period - 12z GFS seems to be going by that script tonight too but more runs are definitely needed. NW England would do very well out of such a setup particularly over higher ground. Alternating colder & milder spells of weather may run until something more blocked in January/ Feb maybe? We have to remember the cold we have had has been some what of a bonus as El Niño winters tend to be back loaded traditionally. Lots of reactive noise on the mad thread over the last few days but signs long term still look optimistic for a proper bite of Winter as we enter the coldest part of the season most conducive for lying snow & a prolonged cold spell late Dec- Early Feb
  8. Going to be an evening of heavy showers by the looks of the radar. First of which moving through here already some gusty winds a potential too later on. Undecided on what could be in store in the run up to Xmas but something seasonal and dry would be my wish if we can’t have snow.
  9. A wild kind of night strongest gusts so far rattling through - can I swap tonight for last Saturday's snow please?
  10. A welcome clearance of the early morning rain that was torrential at times as it passed through this morning just bracing for a windy spell later tonight, weather wise of course not a Saturday night curry with winds forecast up to 60mph inland. Ground is absolutely sodden from weeks of heavy rain through the autumn and last weeks snowmelt. We could really do with the cold, dry & frosty spell forecast for mid month just to dry things out & settle things down for a bit. Have a good weekend all whatever your plans and the weather
  11. Yeah an unsettled few days ahead - tomorrow night is looking a windy one for sure not nice for being out on the town at Xmas parties and outdoor events - consistent signs of a change mid month to something drier and potentially increasingly colder though. My bet would be on a seasonal chilly Xmas leading into a cold & perhaps snowy last week of Dec into the New Year winds from the N/ NNW. It may well just be wishful thinking but things do seem more loaded to cold outbreaks this year and like last weekend shows the NW doesn’t need a roaring BFTE to deliver snow ️
  12. Today hasn’t been as dire as yesterday was with its persistent rain and flooding added to by snow melt. Early rain cleared to leave some brightness. A frost tonight, a chilly day tomorrow then milder & unsettled through the rest of the week. Eyes on around the 16th Dec for perhaps a return to colder or ‘faux cold’ conditions with the renewed risk of frost & fog.
  13. Haha don't blame you moving to where the snow is - although depends where in Scotland I guess. The last big winters were 2009/10 and the Dec 2010 Big Freeze but Runcorn would have seen snow from Storm Christoph in Jan 2021, Beast from the East in 2018, December 2017, Boxing Day 2014 and Jan 2013 to name a few - it shares a similar micro climate to the Wirral and Merseyside despite technically being in Cheshire (Halton) with a more coastal influence than say my location and areas further East in the region.
  14. Haha Runcorn will do slightly better than right on the coast - accumulating snowfall west of the M6 pre Xmas is rare though and last night it was a marginal battleground. Runcorn would have done well in 09/10 & Dec 2010.
  15. A drab grey snizzly, drizzly day with a gradual thaw after last nights snow excitement - a decent event and cold spell for so early in the season and by South Cheshire standards 3-6cm of wet snow making it the earliest and deepest snowfall to occur locally since Dec 2017 but not quite as cold as last years Dec 2022 early December cold spell that saw multiple ice days and -9c minima (‘only’ -6c this year) but not much snow. Considering most cold spells of any substance and with snowfall tend to occur post Xmas though we’ve done well - Cumbria often misses out on heavy snow but inland parts seem to have hit the jackpot this weekend an event to remember for them. The heaviest snow later in the night was to Cheshire’s south and north east over North Staffs & parts of Derbyshire - likes of Stoke saw 8-10cm of wet snow. Here’s some pics of the snow locally fingers crossed it’s not long till we can get some more this Winter!
  16. Yeah had around 3-5cm of wet snow here in SE Cheshire in the end. A decent event all be it not as organised and as far north as forecast perhaps. Parts of Cumbria very much in its own Narnia yesterday. West of you seemed to struggle to see any decent accumulating snow despite seeing it falling quite Winter 2020/21 esque that event with a sharp battleground. Potential for a further snow-sleet- icy rain event later for higher ground, may start off as sleet, even wet snow for lower levels but increasingly cold rain into tomorrow which is a shame that we can’t see the snow stick around for longer. Eyes on late month now after next weeks less cold period for our next bite of winter?
  17. Great pics nearly bought a house on Kingsbourne, Nantwich it's a lovely estate but decided on a Redrow new build in Sandbach instead - interesting to see how grass is all white here in Sandbach but some green tufts are visible still in Nantwich - maybe Sandbach's very slightly higher elevation coming into play there, interesting to see the very localised differences but us South Cheshire snow hunters have to take what we can get tbh here's to a well deserved snowy winter around these parts!
  18. Great to see as Crewe town centre seems to have a mini urban heat island when it comes to snow An hour or so more of snow yet. Moderate-Heavy snow here in Sandbach in the last 5 mins or so.
  19. Send some my way - just light flurries here currently. Intensity will be key areas lucky enough to catch a heavier burst for a while will see a covering other areas just snizzle. It seems less organised than originally forecast.
