  1. Nice little explainer of lenticular clouds from the Met Office. My parents used to live in Gibraltar and the rock regularly had a lenticular cloud sitting above it. Was very odd sometimes being in the shade of it on the beach and then bathing in summery heat and sunshine when swimming a little way out in the sea. Lenticular clouds WWW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK These lens-shaped orographic wave clouds form when the air is stable and winds blow across hills and mountains from the same or similar direction at different heights...
  2. Well maybe it's a sign that the 13 June Enigma will be broken today. I've just been reading Paul's article on here, apparently 13 June is the only day in meteorological summer that has never recorded 30°C.
  3. Wow! What a wonderful chase me and the husband had today. Decided to head towards Oxford way, via Watership Down. Hot, sunny and humid all the way to the downs and a superb view of the main storms passing ahead of us. We spotted a new cell forming and decided to try and follow it. We got to just past Ipsden near Wallingford and found a little layby to pull into, with views pretty much 360°. Now I am too much of an amateur to know exactly what part of the storm I was looking at but as the images show, I was treated to some stunning views. The thunder rumbled and cracked, saw lightning too and then the gusts came followed by the rain. It was such a wonderful experience and I hope you like the images too.
  4. @frostyhollows Thanks for the tip Cirre trying just outside Ipsden and the skies are dramatic. Can't load imglages yet but have just seen my first lightning strike. Yay!!
  5. Driving up towards Oxford for a bit of a chase....spotted this beauty to our East when in Kingsclere.
  6. Does anyone know of good website for information on high vantage points across UK? Maybe contour mapping of ASL? Me and the husband might like to do a chase today, but our knowledge of the areas is about zero in terms of high points. Looking to travel about 1hr/1.5hr from Fleet, towards Banbury...or anywhere in the Oxfordshire sort of area. But basically, we want to go somewhere high to get a view of the storm formations as the move across. We're in NE Hants so any advice would be very welcome Edit: would actually be happy to travel as far as the Worcestershire Beacons as I know the Wych Cutting is a great view - just uncertain as to whether that would be a good spot.
  7. The very definition of frustration. Literally squeezed Fleet through the gap! About 17 raindrops in total.
  8. Hope some weather enthusiast is enjoying the activity to my SW...just skirting Fleet but the rumbles are deep and booming, pretty constant and I have storm envy. Keep feeling the downdraft as I'm sitting here watching and hoping that we might squeeze out a few raindrops as it passes by.
  9. Very dark skies now to my South...guessing Bordon, Alton way...and lots of rumbling.
  10. Just gone very dark here in NE Hants. Have been watching these balloon up to my N and East and think I can now hear a few rumbles in the distance.
  11. Imby, NE Hants, the sun never really broke through yesterday despite many forecasts originally indicating cloud clearance by midday. And then on to today, originally forecast for sunshine until midday and then cloud cover thereafter - and it has been a gorgeous day. Admittedly there is hazy high level cloud but still I am glad you called out the high res models: I'm not confident enough in my own skills to cast aspersions but I have been mildly confused as to why the forecasts have been so inaccurate at such short range. I always understood that fair weather is easier to forecast locally than snow or storms - is that not the case?
  12. Saw your post yesterday, and yep, you were right: originally the cloud was forecast to clear about midday and it has been pushed back to 2pm and now 4/5pm...grrrr. I was really looking forward to a pleasant and warm afternoon. Living in an old cottage, it takes a good few days of warmth for the inside to warm up. It's still damn cold indoors and although I am not fond of too much heat I too am seriously fed up with what seems to be endless chill and gloom. Can't recall such a long run of interminably dull weather. Harrumph!
  13. Doesn't look much but just had a crack of thunder from this, and according to my lightning tracker, a couple of strikes near Farnham. Quite unexpected today.

  16. Well I'm not sure what I think of today's snowfall. Awoke to quite a nice covering of a few cm and enjoyed watching some big ol' fluffy flakes come tumbling down later in the morning. But. I don't recall the last time I experienced such a slushy event. Walking the dogs this morning it looked oh so charming and yet when walking through the woods it was all drip, drip, drip: so much so it actually felt like it was raining when it was actually melting snow. I do think this may well have been the wettest snow day I have ever seen.
  17. Quite a beefy snow shower again in Fleet. Was out walking the dogs in the woods earlier and with all the melt from the trees it felt (and sounded) like it was heavy rain. Met forecast shows snow until 5pm and then heavy rain, so I guess this is the best it will get. First snow of this winter - it's been a poor year for snow but did enjoy the frosts and ice days.
  18. NE Hants managed some settled snow, although not expecting it to last long. Looks pretty though and the first settled snow this Winter!
  19. Temps up nearly a degree in past hour or so and it's heaving down big ol' raindrops. If only it were a little colder.
  20. Yes the intense heat of our first 40°C day period is memorable - awfully memorable. As too is what seems to have been incessant rain for longer periods after the drought conditions. A few good thunderstorms and of course, the wonderful cold snap if early December ( yes, I am a coldie). For me, what I actually remember as a whole is the exceptionally long period of Atlantic inactivity: so much so, that now (Jan 2023) it is active again it seems unusual.
  21. I have one residual habit from those days...always keep candles and matches in a kitchen drawer. I remember as a child rhe electricity regularly going off and Mum whipping out the candles. I grew up thinking it was perfectly normal to have regular power cuts - to the point I actually started missing them!
  22. I am pretty sure it was a NE flow that bought us in NE Hants some snow a few years back, via the Cheshire Gap. A Cheshire Streamer I recall being mentioned. Can't remember the year so can't show a model chart, but am pretty sure someone will have a recollection.
