East Lancs Rain

As much as I’ve hated the oven-like conditions of the last few days, now that the cold front has passed through it’s too cold - it feels really chilly and damp outside - in fact I can even see my own breath. There’s just no happy medium at the moment. Looks like a nice cool, sunny and breezy day coming up tommorow, before the next weather system arrives on Friday.

Sunday - 29° and Sunny Three days later - 16° Dark gloomy cloud and rain Seems like we’ve either had boiling hot sunny weather or chilly wet weather this Summer, no happy medium, alough the first three weeks of July were okay. I’d be much happier with some cool, dry and cloudy or some cool, dry and sunny weather for September.

I gave up on our climate a while ago. It’s just really crap, dreary and depressing most of the time. I’ve been to other parts of the UK and the weather is nearly always better or more to my liking. Got to be the worst region for weather except for perhaps the outer Hebrides or the far north of Scotland. I think we should all just abandon this crap hole so the RAF can use it for bombing practise.

Problem is round here the weather is so changeable and temps are up and down like a yo-yo. It’s either too hot or too cold. For example today it’s supposed to be about 26° according to iPhone weather app, just stepped outside, it’s cloudy now but it feels really hot and humid - not my weather at all. It even tried to rain a minute ago. But then tomorrow afternoon it’s only supposed to be only 16° with rain and then 14° and rain by the weekend. A 10 degree drop in only one day. Same thing happened end of July after we had the heatwave. Whereas down in Penzance its much more stable - it’s been around 18-20° and sunny most days this summer with a few cloudy days as well and not much rain - perfect weather in my opinion. Whereas round here, I never know what to wear. It’s also often not windy enough for my liking here. I find a nice sea breeze much more refreshing than constant heat and humidity. Also not everywhere in NW England has a continental climate, St Bees comes to mind. Must admit I’m getting bored of the hot and sunny conditions now. Some cloud and rain would be nice...... (Watch me regret saying this now...)

Maybe so but both places are beautiful and have some stunning coastline. Whereas round here, it's terraced houses, cobbled streets and Chinese takeaways - There's just no comparison.

I'm not expecting anyone to appreciate 10-17 degree temps in summer, I too prefer it to be warmer than that at this time of year. But I think it's silly when I see people wearing thick coats designed for much colder conditions at 17°, at what is nearly room temperature. It just comes across as soft in my opinion. As for heat, I don't really like anything above 25°. I am acclimatised to the chilly and damp climate of Lancashire so when we get days like we've had this bank holiday weekend I melt lol. 30° is okay for a day or two in July as a once a year Spanish plume, couldn't be doing with it all year round though.

Depends on how much sunshine there is, depends on wind speed, and what the weather been like before etc. I think it also depends on where you live. Different parts of the UK seem to have different tolerance levels to cold/heat. I’ve been to lots of different parts of the UK but I’ve noticed that round here where I live most people seem to be very cold-blooded/dress warmer for the weather compared to other places. I see quite a lot of people (especially women) wearing winter coats in summer here whenever there’s a bit of rain or it’s below 20c. I always wonder how on earth these people survive in winter. I’ve also seen lots of people complaining that it’s too cold/too wet when I’ve thought it isn’t too bad. Yet go to the north east and you see people wearing t-shirts when it’s 12c, thick cloud and a cold sea breeze. That would never happen in Lancashire. Why this is I don’t know why. I can only think that a lot of Lancashire folk must be softies. I was on holiday in Barmouth in Wales last week and the temp was 17c most of the time with a chilly breeze of the sea. I was in a light jacket (except on the last night when it was a lot warmer) and I saw lots of people in t-shirts and shorts or hoodies and shorts etc with just the odd person in a winter coat. Yet if we had the same conditions round here there would be a lot more people in winter coats and normal jackets and maybe one or two people in a t-shirt or shorts. Don’t get me wrong, I have seen and met a few people round here who were/do wear shorts/light clothing in the winter. But they get talked about all the time. There was one guy who used to be into walking and he nearly always wore shorts even in winter. At his funeral, they even mentioned it several times. I just don’t get why anyone would need a winter jacket at what is almost room temperature, especially when you factor in the heat produced by your body when walking. I’d be sweating buckets. I remember it was 11 degrees and heavy rain on one afternoon in June and I was outside wearing a hoodie and a t-shirt and I felt absolutely fine, just like a mild winters day really. In fact I quite enjoyed my walk on the canal as I had it all to myself.

I’m quite the opposite. I like the darker evenings and mornings but I hate being out in the cold. If we could keep the darker nights but have milder temps at 8-13c I would love it.

An old post I know but 17 degrees is hardly winter jacket weather, come on. I was on holiday in Barmouth in Wales and it was cloudy and windy with that temp and I saw people in shorts and t-shirts. Some people are too soft.

West coast does do very poorly for snow, but I imagine the north east coast does better (especially in a beast from the east setup) while still having mild (ish) winters and cooler summers. Less rain on the east coast as well.

Loving the darker nights now. Yesterday evening was a clear sky and it was still going dark at 8 pm, very dark by 9 pm and pitch black by 9:30 pm. I love the darker nights because in June/July when it’s still light after 10 pm, it makes it difficult for your body to wind down and encourages you to stay up later because it’s more difficult to sleep. Even at midnight on a clear night in June it’s not quite completely dark as there’s always a deep blue tinge, whereas tonight it was inky black at 10 pm. And then if you wake up really early (say 6 am) it’s difficult to get back to sleep again as it’s already fully light. And in just two months time the clocks will be going back, will be dark by 5 pm, I love walking home in semi-darkness and I’ll also get an extra hour in bed, really looking forward to it.

Just stepped outside the door and the air feels like an oven. And that was in the shade. It’s currently 29° here according to weather.com, waaaaaaaaaay too hot for me, 25° is my limit for heat, anything more is too much, especially at this time of year when it’s supposed to be cooling off. 29° is okay for July heatwaves, but too hot for the end of August, in my opinion anyway. However, it’s about 10 degrees cooler in my bedroom as it’s only 19° in there according to my thermometer. It’s a north-facing room that gets very little sun unlike the other rooms. It’s also on the ground floor as well as I live in a bungalow. Like having built-in air conditioning. It’s a pain most of the time as I have to wear jumpers for most of the year but it’s a blessing when we get scorching hot days like today.

I know a lot of people on here like steaming hot conditions in summer and sub-zero temps in winter, but not me. You’re lucky that you live near the sea as you get more moderation in temperature (ie cooler on hot days but warmer on cold days), still full sun here but barely any breeze, 29° according to weather.com, too hot to go outside, feels like a waste.

Well I’m back from my holiday in Barmouth. Sadly it wasn’t my favourite holiday. Was a bit of a write-off to be honest. The weather for most of the week was very cool with the wind coming off the sea and temp around 17° until Friday when things started off cloudy but the sun was out by early afternoon. Temp reached 20°. Went home on Saturday with blazing sun and a hot journey home (air con on one of the trains wasn’t working and there was only 1 or 2 opening windows in the whole carriage). I was also forced to sit on the sunny side of the carriage as nearly all the seats were taken up. I was melting. On the next train the air con was working thankfully so it was a much more comfortable journey back from Shrewsbury to Manchester. Manchester was sunny and boiling hot (it’s Manchester for gods sake, it should be raining) and to make things worse they were having this gay parade thing (thought it was a bit odd in the station seeing people dressed in rainbow coloured clothing) so I had to fight my way through the crowds and security man even checked my suitcase! To make things worse, they had moved the bus routes so I had to look at the map and walk in the blazing sun to find my bus home. Eventually I found the right stop. But worst part was that I had a bad cold for most of the holiday as well as chronic tiredness the whole time, I spent most of my time sat inside the hotel eating biscuits and drinking cups of coffee and water, I felt so horrible. For the last four days, I only went out in the evenings for a meal. Sat here now in my nice cool house, don’t know the temp as my weather station is still in my rucksack but weather app yesterday said 28, poked my head out of bathroom window and the air feels hot, with barely any breeze. Unfortunately, I am too far away from the sea so I get less moderation in temperature compared to other places, no nice sea breezes. Sat indoors now with a steaming cold, holiday over for another year, I feel like crying.

No, I wasn't building sand castles, the wind was literally whipping up the sand from off the beach and blowing it into your face, mouth and eyes as I was walking along the promenade. Not nice at all. Had to put my hood up at one point. Was like walking in the Sahara desert but without the heat lol. Anyway, after some more rain this morning, it appears to be brightening up a little now. Still breezy though and cool at 14°C.

Not too bad thanks. Wish the weather would improve though.
