  1. Hmmm.. Not so sure about that... The first half of June was exceptionally wet and cool! This morning in Barmouth, Wales: Sunny Intervals, Breezy, Temp 16.
  2. Hello fellow Welshman. I've decided to join this thread as I've just arrived in Barmouth for a weeks holiday (yesterday). Mostly sunny yesterday afternoon but with a very strong breeze coming from off the Irish Sea. Temp was only about 17/18°C. The evening felt distinctly autumnal indeed. Sounds better than Friday's weather anyway. Funny, I went to the NE coast in May last year and it was all E/NE 'lies and now I'm on the west coast it's forecast to be W/SW 'lies all week. Can't escape those chilly sea breezes!
  3. Arrived in Barmouth, Wales late this afternoon. Mostly sunny but with a very strong breeze coming from off the Irish Sea. Temp was only about 17/18°C. Not much strength in the sun either. The evening felt distinctly autumnal indeed. More like late September really. Funnily enough, I went to the NE coast in May last year and it was all E/NE 'lies and now I'm on the west coast it's forecast to be W/SW 'lies all next week. Can't escape those chilly sea breezes!
  4. If you had to choose between it being, say, 17° and Partly Cloudy with a stiff westerly breeze, or 22° and Overcast with light winds, which would you choose and why? Do you prefer it how it's been this week (when its not been raining) ie cool, sunny, breezy or how it was at the start of August (warm but mostly cloudy)? A lot of people on here seem to be more bothered about temperatures than sunshine totals, but I've seen a couple of people complaining about the apparent lack of sunshine in London this summer, despite it being quite a warm summer temperature-wise. However, in real life, people seem to be more bothered about the sunshine than the apparent temperature. Take today for example - it was very cool this morning in Manchester but I saw lots of people in shorts and t-shirts. Thursday here was mostly sunny but quite windy and very cool and just 15°C. Yet I saw quite a few in summer clothes. Yet I remember a week last Friday when it was warm but cloudy and wet, I saw quite a few in thick coats despite the temperature being above 20°C! There's also been many days when it's been cool temps but when the suns come out people have gone "the suns come out, it's boiling now" but when it's been warm temps but overcast people have complained about the gloom. I think I prefer it warm and cloudy over cool and sunny, because you can wear light clothing without being reliant on the sun for warmth. Whereas if it's cool and sunny, and you're only wearing a t-shirt and shorts because of the sun, as soon as the sun goes in or the wind gets up, you're going to feel a chill. Also, cloud is good at holding heat in at night, which means that temperatures don't suddenly plummet as soon as the sun goes down. A rather odd question I know, but I'd be interested to know which people prefer.
  5. Well it's still better than Summer 2016 and 2017 in my opinion. There have been quite a few days in July when I was able to sit in the garden in my shorts and t-shirt in the sun. My legs and arms are slightly darker than they were in the winter.
  6. Forget that. In Manchester now and it's mostly cloudy and it feels like October.
  7. Not so sure about that. I think August 2017 will take some beating. That said, it's rained loads here this last week, so I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out wetter than August 2017. Though CET-wise we are still above August 2017 but that's mainly down to the warm start. On the bright side however, August 2017 was (partly) rescued by a nice a nice BH weekend, and it looks like it could be a repeat performance this year, we shall see.
  8. Brigtening up now after the rain showers early this morning. Could be a nice day ahead.
  9. And just for a change, its raining... Off on holiday for a week to Barmouth in Wales tomorrow. Hopefully the weather will be better there. Checked the forecast and its looks decent and mainly dry, if a bit cool and windy. BBC Weather forecast for Barmouth, Gwynedd. Tonight: Light Rain Showers. Min 14°C. Wind 25mph SW. https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2656311

  11. It's very cool yes, but it has similar sunshine/rainfall levels to many parts of the south east, which I think is quite impressive really. And it can get snow in winter with an easterly wind. London heat is too hot for many people anyway.
  12. WoW over three times as much rain as on the east coast! Looks like a horrible climate to me. Tons of rain, cold night temperatures year round, daytime temperatures not very inspiring either. Probably very cloudy as well. The summer highs are around 1 degree higher than in Tynemouth but nights are much colder and they'd be a lot more rain so the extra warmth probably wouldn't be noticed under cloudy skies. The only good thing about this climate would be the potential for tons of snow in the winter. I remember staying there one winter and I just remember it being cold and cloudy all week. Don't remember it raining though. As for Tynemouth, while its chilly for most of the year, at least it doesn't rain much and the sunshine levels are reasonable. There's nothing more depressing than a gloomy wet day (like today). They can also get snow showers in winter with a cold enough easterly blowing in from off the North Sea. I was last up there back at the end of May 2018. While most of the country was having lots of warm and sunny weather, the first three days was thick fog and temps struggling to get above 13/14°C. There was also a very cold wind coming off the North Sea. Must be absolutely brutal in winter.
  13. Has the highest suicide rate in the world apparently: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_in_Greenland Looks nice though: https://youtu.be/BfAQWw4ibHM
  14. It's very windy here this afternoon. More windy than on Saturday actually. Plenty of sunshine but at only 14°C (max 15°C) its more like early May or early October.
  15. This. I can't understand why so many people in the UK moan about the weather on an almost daily basis, when they could very easily just move abroad. As for me, yes I do moan about the weather sometimes but I try to remember that many countries around the world have to endure extreme heat/cold for many months of the year or even all year round. I appreciate our temperature climate. Wet and windy weather isn't pleasant but at least it's better than 30+ temperatures for many months then below 0 for many months.
  16. Apart from the sun hours, that July/August temperature/rainfall average sounds like something you would expect abroad, not in the UK. No wonder the weathermen are always talking about warm weather in the capital! For comparison purposes, here is the climate of where my mother originally comes from: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tynemouth#Climate Similar rainfall/sunshine averages but look at the difference in temperatures!
  17. So the average high was 25.5c. And only 50 mm of rain? Sounds like tropical weather to me. I thought London averaged 22-23c in July.
  18. You live in the South East but only managed 25c?? Reached 33c here in late July.
  19. In contrast it was a reliatively mild night here at 9.8c. Still really chilly for mid-August though!
  20. Think that's a bit harsh tbh, we've had quite a few dry days this August and there's been some sunny spells inbetween the rainy spells. Today was okay up until lunchtime but it's now pouring down, currently 14c, cat ouside but sheltering under the verander.
  21. No one said anything about wearing a t-shirt outside in winter, I assume they'll be wearing a jacket or a hoodie or something with them to keep thier upper body warm. But it just goes to show - we're all different. As for me, I generally try to hold off the winter coat until we're well into single digits. However, I usually wear a hoodie if it's below 17c or so.
  22. Me too. Often middle aged women I notice. Often accompanied by children in shorts and t-shirts, which makes it look even more odd.
  23. For most of last winter I was okay in a t-shirt and hoodie with no coat on top. But occasionally I got the odd "where's your coat" comment. But I have good circulation and I find my body just gets used to the lower temperatures anyway. I don't wear shorts in winter though - that's a whole different level!
