  1. Heavy Rain here but wind not that bad. Currently 11.2°C with 99% humidity. Like a typical mild winter day.
  2. Currently 17.5°C with 72% humidity in the bedroom.
  3. What’s a HMO? Do you not have your own on-suite toilet/shower in your studio flat? Fair enough I guess.
  4. It didn’t feel cold to me, it felt very pleasant, high around 16°C which definitely isn’t cold for late September.
  5. Nice autumn day, high 15.9 low 9.4. Dry with plenty of sunshine. 🌤 What was noticeable however was that there was no strength in the sun. Not surprising as we are past the autumn equinox, sun strength is now only the same as mid March. Tomorow is going to be an absolute washout, our first proper wet and windy day for a very long time.🌧 Wind gusts forecast to reach 58 mph in St Bees, with most days having a force 4 (fresh breeze) after that, according to bbc weather. Autumn is definitely here.
  6. I don’t think so, I think that’s just an old wives tale, I think what nature does now has nothing to do with the upcoming winter, nature is just reacting to the previous season I think. Nice day today, high 15.9, low 9.4, dry with plenty of sunshine. 🌤 Tomorrow is going to be a washout, our first proper autumnal wet and windy day for a very long time. 🌧
  7. Oh no, I can’t imagine how awful it must be for you to have to walk in a chilly corridor for 10 seconds in shorts and a t-shirt to get to the loo. Perish the thought! Yes you’re exactly right. I see too many people starting to winter clothes at this time of year and they’re usually the first to complain when winter arrives and temperatures really take a dip. CH has made a lot of people soft when it comes to cold, cranking the indoor heating up to Sahara desert levels and complaining that it’s cold when the outside temperature drops below 15°C. The energy crisis, as terrible as it is might toughen some people up when they are forced to turn down the thermostat this winter.
  8. It feels a lot warmer today. Temp has risen to a balmy 15°C and the sun is shining. tempted to get the shorts out!
  9. Yes, I bet Markyo and all of the other coldies would love living there! All that frost and snow! I once went there in November 2016, temp was barely above freezing and it was cold rain all day, never felt so cold in November before!
  10. While I certainly don’t miss the extreme heat we had in July and the week of hot and sunny weather we had in August, I do miss the 18-22°C days we had in summer, where you could comfortably wear shorts and a t-shirt both inside and outside. Can’t do that now. I’ll have to look into it more. I couldn’t agree more. The period from late October to late February is grim, especially up north where its even colder, darker and wetter. Lol. I’m surprised you say that as up north the summer wasn’t that hot really. Other than the two extremely hot days in July and the week of hot weather in August it was mostly temperate in the high teens and low twenties. While I did feel warm a lot of the time it was rarely unbearable, and I don’t have any air con, just a little desk fan in my bedroom. Just wearing light clothing and opening the windows was enough for me. It was similar to last summer really, warmer and drier than average but not exceptionally so. We have definitely had hotter summers, summer 2018 felt much hotter to me, June and July were both warmer and sunnier than this year here, although August was cooler. Where are you where it’s 4°C outside? Currently 12°C here. If my house was 21-22°C I’d be in shorts and a t-shirt. Only when it drops below 20 do I usually put a jumper or hoodie on. The heating is set to around 18 degrees in our house, in the mornings and evenings only, it is off during the middle of the day and at night. 21-22°C is what our house is usually at during the middle of summer! Definitely the southerners on here that like it hot in summer and like warm indoor temps. Ours is set to around 18C during the day and is set to 5C at night lol.. It’s enough for us, jumpers during the day, winter duvet at night, and also being 15 stone helps, lol... Yes you are probably right, knew it sounded too good to be true! I think they are just trying to make a quick buck off desperate people struggling with their energy bills. Is it cheaper than running the central heating though?
  11. 1°C! That must have been an experience.. the daytime temp during TBFE was -2°C to -1°C in most places. So it was barely any warmer inside! Don’t think I would be able to sleep in a 32°C room. Can’t imagine 7°C either, must have absolutely perishing! Probably cold enough to see your breath at that temp! I remember our boiler failed in winter about 10 years ago, temp in living room got down to 13°C, not sure about the other rooms. Luckily we have an electric fire in the living room and a gas fire in the dining room. The gas fire gets occasional use during the winter, as the CH is off during the middle of the day. The electric fire is very rarely used, but is there in case the heating breaks down.
  12. I’ve been seeing a lot of adverts recently for this “ultraheat pro” product. It’s this mini electrical heater that you plug into your wall and claims to significantly warm up a room whithin minutes... It also claims that it’s cheaper than running CH and saves hundreds on your energy bills.. All sounds a bit too good to be true... Looks a bit scammy to me.. Wondering what others think?
  13. Just out of interest, what is the lowest and highest temperature you have ever seen in your home? For me the highest was 28°C in the kitchen during the two day extreme heatwave in July after the oven had been on. The lowest was about 12°C in the hallway on a cold winters night.
  14. Our house suffers from high humidity and dampness too, though im usually ok with it as long it’s below 70%. Currently 16.2°C with 61% humidity in my bedroom, the heating has been off for most of the day and I’ve had the window open for a while though. Outside it’s 12.1°C.
  15. We usually open ours a little bit even during the winter just to ventilate the house. Bedroom window gets opened for at least 20 minutes a day all year round just for a bit of ventilation. The house can get a bit fusty if we don’t. Some hardy folk on this thread.
  16. We finally gave in and turned ours on last night. Indoor temp now around 18°C. Only a 1-2°C rise in temp but amazing how much warmer it feels. Put winter duvet on last night. Opened the bedroom window for a bit in case I would be too warm in bed, bedroom temp cooled down to 16°C, felt lovely and snug under the duvet. My house is an old detached bungalow, built around 1930 I think. It’s got some loft and wall insulation. It’s a cool house, nice in summer but once outdoor temps drop to 15-16°C the indoor temp struggles to even maintain 18°C. This is a disadvantage as it means we have to use the heating more and can’t wear summer clothes as much as we could if we lived in a more modern house. The advantage however comes in summer, no need for air conditioning, and even in a heatwave it “only” reaches 25-26°C. Being up north as well, it’s cooler so we have to use the heating more than most southerners do, around 8 months of the year, from around mid September to mid May most years. And that’s to keep the indoor temperature at 18-19°C. It has been 15-16°C here for a while now, and the last couple of days has dropped into the low teens. Brrrrr! I wouldn’t get a “smart” meter if I were you, read a lot of bad things about them. When the meter man came to read our meter, he didn’t like them either, said they do nothing to save electricity at all. He also said some customers had been blackmailed into having one by the energy companies, he said they can not force you to have one. Check out this website for more info: stopsmartmeters.org.uk Won’t be getting one in this house unless they become mandatory. They are more like dumb meters. Just like “smart” motorways. Pointless, stupid and dangerous.
  17. A miserable day here. Had a long lie in today so didn’t see any sun. The high a pitiful 13.4°C, the low 4.0°C. Gloomy as hell. So depressing. The double whammy of a cold clear night followed by a dull day has meant that the house is really chilly, just 16.5°C in the living room, brrrrr. I think the heating will have to go this week! Didn’t need the heating on at all last September as it was much warmer. Already feeling more depressed by this weather, I think it feels worse this year because of the warm summer and the quick descent into autumn, as well as the energy crisis making this winter very expensive.
  18. Just 16.5°C in the living room today. Brrrr! ️Not putting heating on yet as we are holding out for as long as possible due to the tremendous rise in energy bills! Think we’ll have to put it on sometime this week though as the weather is going to get colder. Just 13°C outside today, thick cloud, breezy. Already feels cold and miserable and it’s still only September! Think it’s going to be a long winter this year. So depressing, hate autumn. Not feeling well and with it being cold indoors im sat in bed on my iPad with my onesie on! I think we’re going to see some shockingly low indoor temperatures on this thread this winter, as people can’t afford to put the heating on.
  19. Shorts AND t-shirts OUTSIDE in the winter? Wow they must be very hardy in Northallerton then. I don’t see that round here, see the odd person in shorts during the winter but never with just a t-shirt, and usually people going to/from the gym, teenagers who have played sport, joggers, cyclists etc. Wow your house is warm, mine has been 17-18C for a couple of weeks. It’s an old bungalow though so it’s colder. The benefit though is it doesn’t get that hot in summer - yours must have been absolutely boiling during the hot summer we have just had. I bet it’s you who pays the bill as well.. It’s down to 16.5°C in the living room today, and it feels chilly. But we are holding out for as long as possible due to the huge rise in energy prices this year. But with even chillier weather next week we will have to put it on I think. Last year we didn’t have to put it on until 1st October as it was a warm September. I see a lot of people are going back to using logs, coal fires etc. I am seriously considering getting solar panels or even putting a small wind turbine in the garden. The only way to beat the energy crisis is to generate your own power.
  20. Amazing how much warmer it is down South, especially at this time of year! It’s only reached 15/16°C here the last few days, with thick cloud cover and very little sunshine. As a result, indoor temps are suppressed at 17-18C. Can’t remember the last time I had a 20 degree day here.
  21. Only works up to a point I find. In theory yes you could continue to just wear more and more layers until you look like the Michelin man but then who wants to dress like an eskimo around the house? I’m all for wearing a jumper before putting putting the heating on, but if once you’re wearing a jumper and you’re still cold it’s time for the heating to go on, unless you really can’t afford to, in which case, you may be forced to wear 10 layers in the house all winter or make drastic spending cuts elsewhere. Also, not only does central heating keep the house warmer, it also reduces dampness (humidity). If you don’t put your heating on in winter, you will probably have problems with damp and mould, and that is not healthy. Then there’s elderly people and people with certain health conditions that need the heating on warmer. Older people feel the cold more. That’s why old folks homes are always really warm. Ive also never used antibiotics before, always just let my immune system do it’s thing. I’m no softie when it comes to heating, I’m fine down to 18°C, 17°C at a push but really don’t like it when it drops below that. Some people have thier heating at 24°C! Now that is soft!
  22. Plenty of students wear coats where I am. When I was at college I usually just wore a hoodie unless it was really cold or chucking it down, as carrying round a coat all day wasn’t really convenient. Although there were a few who wore shorts in the winter.. Also a lot of the students wore their coats in the classroom, which I thought was quite odd as the classrooms were usually really warm. I very rarely wear gloves unless it’s extremely cold. I can’t remember ever wearing a scarf though, never wore thermal trousers either. I notice with the older generation that despite growing up with cold winters and no heating, that they tend to dress warmer and complain about the cold more. I think generally the older you are the colder you feel, I think the reason is down to having less muscle mass as you age. Must be warm in Aberdeen then! Been really cloudy here last few days and despite the temps being relatively mild at 15/16°C, the lack of sunlight combined with night temps of 8-10°C has meant the indoor temperature has been really struggling at 17-18°C. We have had to put the heating on during a lot of Septembers. Once the outdoor maxes drop below 17°C, the indoor temp struggles to reach 19°C, especially if it’s cloudy. It has been below 20°C indoors here since I can back from holiday on the 10th. House never really warmed up to summer levels. The indoor temp has been quite warm this summer, above 20°C throughout pretty much the whole summer, but now it’s been really struggling at 17-18°C, despite daytime temps being 15-16°C. I live in a 1930’s detached bungalow which is probably why my house is cooler. I do have double glazed windows and loft insulation though. It’s good in summer because the indoor temps rarely get ridiculously high, even during the two extremely hot days during July when it got to about 35°C here, the indoor temp was “only” 26-28°C. But it does suffer with damp, indoor humidity is quite high, especially during damp weather. Not put the heating on yet, and as a result the indoor humidity is quite high at 65-80%.
  23. Just in time too, before the December to remember.... You are the polar opposite of Markyo, if you are being serious then I dread to think how high your energy bills are! Never had an electric blanket, never really felt the need for one, getting into bed at night in winter it can be a bit chilly but then it doesn’t take long to warm up when you’re under a thick duvet.
