  1. I have recently started taking cold showers too. Not because of electric bills but because it helps me to feel less tired in the morning. It also has big health benefits too. It has helped to increase my tolerance to cold water and probably cold in general. Still using hot water to wash my hands though, that is a must for me. Seeing a lot of people wearing coats now. I always think it’s a mistake to wear a coat too early in the autumn, because you don’t give your body chance to acclimatise to the colder temperatures - if you wear a coat now then you’ve got nothing in reserve for when it really gets cold. I’m fine in a t-shirt and a hoodie at the moment, and still wearing shorts on some days. I always try and hold out until at least early November before wearing a winter coat.
  2. Your tolerance to cold is quite remarkable! Your heat tolerance is quite amazing too considering you work at 40°C plus temps in 100% humidity! You’re very lucky you don’t feel the cold as a lot of people will not be be to afford to put the heating on this winter. For me I’m quite a warm blooded person but I still do feel the cold too. I have quite good circulation so Im comfortable wearing shorts and a t-shirt outside until it’s gets below 15C or so. Indoors needs to be at least 18C. I don’t usually need a thick coat until it gets into single digits. In terms of heat I usually start to feel too hot when it gets above 22°C. So my preference is for middle of the road temperatures around 14-20°C, which I find most comfortable. Indoors 19-21°C. As for heating, we’ve managed without it so far, it has been only 17-18C in the house but I’ve felt warm enough in joggers and a hoodie.
  3. 18.6°C with 76% humidity in the bedroom. Feeling a bit warmer in the house compared to recent days. Actually got my bedroom window slightly open tonight!
  4. Let’s hope they’re wrong. Tbh, I think because we’ve had a good summer this year it feels sad to see it go, and so I’m less enthusiastic about colder weather. Tbh, I don’t like winter full stop, whether it’s mild and wet or cold and dry. Most other countries have better winters than us - either they get more snow or it’s warmer and sunnier. UK winter is the worst of both worlds - not much snow but still cold, damp and miserable. A lot of countries have colder winters than the U.K. but they are rewarded with more snow and tend to get more sunshine too. It also tends to be more of a dry cold rather than the horrible damp cold that the U.K. gets. They also tend have better infrastructure to deal with it. I just can’t get excited for a U.K. winter like so many on here do. UK winter is mostly just cloudy, damp, windy and 5-10°C, with the odd dusting here and there. It goes on for far too long as well. It’s just so depressing and dreary, the gloom, the very short days, the lack of sunshine, the incessant dampness. From late October until mid March. It just makes me want to hibernate and stay inside all day. By New Year I’m usually counting down the days until Spring. I enjoy extreme winter months - January 2010 for the heavy prolonged snowfall, December 2010 for the exceptional cold, December 2015 and February 2019 for the exceptional mildness. February 2020 for the incredible wetness and strong wind storms. But the rest are just boring and forgettable. The worst is always from when the clocks go back till late January. By February I usually start to feel a bit better as the days are starting to get longer and there are signs of spring. The ideal winter for me would be around 10°C with lots of sunshine, with some wind storms chucked in and snow from Christmas Day to New Year. Im dreading this upcoming winter because of the huge spike in energy prices, it will be a difficult winter for many. Which is why I’m hoping we get a warm/mild October and November and an early spring. I hate it when it switches too quickly. I prefer a more gradual transition into autumn so it’s easier to acclimate to the colder temperatures. And please don’t talk about Christmas already dear god! Cold winters make it too cold to want to be outside for very long, plus the icy pavements can make it treacherous to walk outside sometimes. I also enjoy the wind storms that mild winters often bring. I do love going for a walk in deep snow though. I agree. Today was a bit depressing. Very overcast. Was just 13°C with 90% humidity at midday and it felt cold and damp, it warmed up a bit later but only managed 15.7°C because of the thick cloud cover, which actually isn’t far from average here but after the couple of warm sunny Septembers it feels rather chilly. Saturday despite the cool temperatures was actually quite a pleasant day because of the sunshine. The grey gloomy skies are the worst thing about U.K. autumn/winter. I don’t mind the cooler temps too much but the cloud is just I’ve just been on an evening walk and the skies have cleared to leave a lovely sky.
  5. Must have been different in Sheffield and the midlands then. Here in East Lancs I remember it being cold and snowy in early December, and then from around Christmas Day there was snow on the ground for two weeks, it never got mild enough for it to melt during that period. The first week of February was also cold, before it turned very mild for the rest of the month. So I definitely consider it to be a cold winter here, it definitely felt cold, especially after the previous “polar vortex of doom winter” which Gavin Partridge likes to call it. Im personally hoping for a winter like 15/16 or 19/20 this year, to help with the high energy bills and to top up the reservoirs after a dry summer. I love the wind storms that mild and wet winters bring also, something which the last two winters have been lacking. Although in a mild and wet winter, even when it’s 10-13C it often doesn’t feel it due to cold winds and dampness, always makes it feel much colder I find. My favourite winter (and autumn) in recent years is 2018/19. Nice mild October, November and December and an exceptionally warm and sunny February. The only month that felt remotely wintery during that wintery was January. From a snowy perspective my favourite winter was 09/10 and also the beast from the east on 1st March 2018, when we had windchills of -10°C, I’ll never forget how cold that day was.
  6. Brrrr... 18°C in my lounge currently. It’s nearly always chilly in the house after coming back from holiday I’ve noticed.
  7. I think temps are still below average, especially at night. After the last couple of warm Septembers, it feels unseasonably cool. I like a warm and sunny September, because by September it’s cooling off anyway and the sun is getting weaker. And the fact that it’s the last warm month before the cold, rain and gloom of autumn and winter sets in, for six months or so. It’s a long wait until spring. So it’s nice to get an Indian Summer. Depressing isn’t it? At least here it’s been mostly dry and temps have still managed 14/15°C this weekend, was actually able to sit in the garden in shorts and a t-shirt on Saturday afternoon, felt quite pleasant in the sun, but sadly it will soon be too cold to do that until next March at the earliest. This week looks to be a bore fest here, not much sun, not much rain, very little wind, temps coolish at 15-18°C, one word, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Saw a nice rainbow yesterday though, during a heavy shower. The sun is out in London for the Queens Funeral, ironic considering it was pouring down during her coronation in 1952. I know this will probably be an unpopular opinion on a weather forum but... I (and many others) do not want a cold winter this year, due to the soaring cost of energy bills. A lot of people will struggle to keep warm this winter, and with the dry summer, a mild and wet, Atlantic winter would be ideal this year, to top up the reservoirs and reduce the burden on people’s wallets. A cold and dry winter would be the worst outcome.. But it would be Sod’s law that after a decade of mostly mild winters, that we get a cold one when it’s least wanted. It would be nice to get a bit of snow this winter - but we have to consider the people who will not be able to afford to heat thier homes.
  8. It’s been the same here. A dry, mostly cloudy, benign day until mid-late afternoon when the showers cane along. The rain got really heavy at one point. I was a bit surprised given the forecast, and was thinking of going on a late afternoon walk but decided not to when it started raining. Spent a bit of time sorting through stuff in the shed, it was still pleasantly warm in there. Also saw a rainbow for the first time in ages. A disappointing end to the day, but at least I got to see a nice rainbow. Also, as a cat lover, had to include a photo of the ex-Tom cat that likes to visit my house, he’s become a big boy after getting neutered - and after the neighbour started feeding him... I know this will probably be an unpopular opinion on a weather forum but... I and many others do not want a cold winter this year, due to the soaring cost of energy bills. As Peter Kay said, “that fine rain that soaks you through”. Seem to get it quite often round here. Watching the Queens funeral now, the suns come out in London, cloudy here. The weather looks to be very tedious this week - mostly cloudy, mostly dry, light winds, temps coolish at 15-18°C. Looking at the bbc forecast the next sunny day doesn’t look to be until Saturday here. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
  9. You’re lucky you’re like that. Gonna be a miserable winter for many this year, with a lot of people unable to put the heating on (or have to run it at a much lower temperature) due to the soaring cost of energy bills. 2017 was our last proper cool September but it was also very wet, cloudy and cyclonic. This September is very different - more like September 2015 which was a cool, dry and sunny month. However, due to the very warm and wet first week will skew that so it probably end up being a warm and wet month overall. Yes, but September is usually warmer than this. This kind of weather with the cold nights is more typical of March or April, or late September/October. September 2017 was cool and very wet. September 2015 was cool and dry. September 2018 was also fairly cool. I find it’s the opposite, the sun in June feels a lot warmer than September to me as it’s much stronger. In a couple of weeks there will barely be any warmth left in the sun.
  10. Had we had this pattern in winter it would probably be below 0 by day. The high today was 14.9 the low 2.0. Unusual to see such a large diurnal range in September. It was pleasant in the afternoon but by 6 pm the sun went in and the breeze got up and it felt quite chilly. The next few days look milder but also cloudier. Much milder tonight, currently 10.6°C with 73% humidity.
  11. Got down to 2°C here so down to ground frost levels, although I wasn’t up early enough to see it. Unusual to get a ground frost this early in the autumn here. Lovely day though, mostly sunny, and temperatures quickly rose in the morning. Feels very pleasant out in the sun now, sat in the garden in shorts and a t-shirt. Quite chilly indoors though at only 17°C.
  12. Down to 17C in the house today. Put the heating on for a little bit, first time I’ve done that since May. Actually feels warmer sat outside in the sunshine, the outdoor temp isn’t much lower at 14/15°C.
  13. Despite being mostly sunny with fairly light winds it’s just 13°C with 49% humidity at 1pm here. Dew point just 2.5°C! So it’s feeling more like an early spring day than what you would expect in mid September. Coldest it’s been since April I think. Not just the chill but also the dryness of the air that’s notable. Last night was another cold and clear night with a low of 6°C. Won’t be long until the first ground frost. Can’t remember a spell like it in mid September before.
  14. That sounds like the perfect winter for me. Plenty of pleasant mild sunny days but also the occasional flurry. Best of both worlds. It’s definitely very unusual for this early in the autumn. Despite being mostly sunny with fairly light winds it’s just 12.5°C with 53% humidity at 1pm here. Dew point just 3.1°C! Last night was another cold and clear night with a low of 6°C. Won’t be long until the first ground frost. Can’t remember a spell like it in mid September before.
  15. Not sure I’d describe it as comfortable! Just 17C in my bedroom today and it feels a bit chilly! Put my onesie on! Yes it’s similar here. Northerlies tend to be dry here though as I’m sheltered by the Pennines. It’s very cool for September though, just 12°C at 12:40 pm, I don’t think it’s been that low since April! I was in shorts and a hoodie yesterday, felt fine but I noticed the chill indoors last night. Don’t think I’ll be in shorts today! That’s warm lol, it’s 17C in my bedroom. Can’t you adjust the thermostat?
  16. 14°C forecast for Saturday here. Funny how you had much hotter summer temperatures than me, guess the climate is a lot more continental when you are.
  17. I don’t mind early autumn tbh. In fact I quite like it. It is still reasonably warm during the day, the sun still has a decent warmth to it and its still light until early evening. For me I find it’s from around mid October onwards that things start to get depressing, especially when the clocks go back and we’re plunged into darkness at 4 pm. By then the sun has no strength, and it’s cold and wet. Yes, our winters aren’t ideal. Too much damp, cold and gloom yet barely any snow. A lot of other countries have colder, snowier winters but they are a lot sunnier. So it’s colder but you are rewarded by beautiful crisp sunny days with deep snow. Or if we kept the same temps (or even had it milder) but had more sunshine and less wind and dampness it wouldn’t be so bad either. U.K. winter is the worst of both worlds - very little snow but it’s still cold and miserable. You still need a coat and the heating on. Or how about a winter in Spain or Portugal? Not much snow but a lot sunnier and also a lot warmer. Tbh I’d be quite happy if the U.K. had Spanish winters, because although there would be even less snow, we would skip the all of the depressing cold, damp, gloominess that drags on for months. It definitely does feel more like autumn this week. The nights have been in single digits and the days have only been in the mid teens, apart from Tuesday which reached 18°C here. The indoor temp has struggled too only 17-18°C. If it gets much lower the heating will have to go on! It was 14°C on my evening walk and I was comfortable in shorts, but needed a hoodie, but it will soon be too cold for shorts, and in a few weeks it will probably be too cold even for a hoodie, will probably have to start wearing thick coats as well. I’d like late autumn/winter a lot more if if the days were longer and there was more sunshine and more snow, and less rain.
  18. Yesterday was wet but was mild and cleared up in the evening to leave a cold and clear night with a low of 6.3°C, coldest night here in ages. Today reached 18.4C so quite a large durinial range, so when the suns out we can still get summer like temps during the day. But the grass was still wet well into the afternoon despite being mostly sunny, and the weaker sun and lower sun angle was quite noticeable today, believe it or not the sun is now only as powerful as it is in late March. I noticed a few leaves on the ground also, and due to the cold night the windows were all steamed up this morning, so indoor temps were pegged back into the high teens today, just a few signs that autumn is not far away. That said today was pleasant and I was comfortable in shorts and a t-shirt on my evening walk. September is probably my favourite month of the year for the weather, because the temperatures are very moderate, not much heat, not much cold, just comfortable conditions, the weather is often nice too - September is often a better month than August these days anyway. The sun still has a nice gentle warmth but is not feirce like in June and July. And it is still light until 7:30/8:00pm. Tbh I would be quite happy if we just had September weather all year round! A lot of weather enthusiasts seem to regard September as a boring and uninteresting period but I usually enjoy it. Only thing that spoils it is the knowledge that the warm weather will soon be over and the six months of darkness, wind and rain will soon be here. The rest of the week looks to be bone dry with plenty of sunshine but temperatures rather cool, especially at night when it looks like we could get some ground frost - possibly air frost in rural locations. By the weekend daytime temperatures are only forecast to reach the low teens here, and nights only around 3 or 4 degrees, as winds turn northerly. So although the weather itself will be fine, and it will probably feel ok in any sunshine, it will be more like what you would expect on a late March day than a mid September one, cold early and late but quite pleasant during middle of the day. At the moment it is clear and cold with a nice 3/4 moon. Currently 8.3°C with 89% humidity.
  19. Strange that. Usually the opposite way around. Was actually a nice day here after a chilly start, reached 18C and was mostly sunny all day, had a nice evening walk in my t-shirt and shorts, was surprised to see it was raining in London on the news this evening. Looks like the south has had the opposite weather, warm but wet, with temperatures and rainfall well above average. Can’t speak for the rest of the country but I was on holiday in Scarborough from the 3rd till the 10th and the weather was quite summery, I missed a lot of the rain most of the country endured. So I got quite lucky with the weather. Yes, in recent years in September when it has been dry it has tended to be sunny and warm (eg most of Sep 2021) and when it has been wet it has tended to be cool (eg Sep 2017). This September has been unusual in that the first week was very wet but also warm (usually the first week of September is dry and warm), and now we are going into a dry but cool pattern. Would personally prefer it to be warm and dry or wet and cool, as warm and wet weather can be quite annoying and awkward to dress for, cool and dry is ok but probably not warm enough for summery clothes, so less opportunity for people to wear summery clothes in September this year - although after the summer we have had there has been plenty of opportunities for that. Question is do we really want a cold winter this year? With the soaring cost of fuel bills I think even the biggest snow fans would be concerned at the thought of a cold winter this year. It would be Sod’s law we get a really cold winter this year just at the worst possible time after a decade of mostly mild winters. Can’t speak for my location as I’ve been on holiday in Scarborough from the 3rd to the 10th but while I was there I had lots of sunshine and not a lot of rain. Temps were mostly in the high teens. So typical September/late summer weather. It seems like the south has been warmer but also much wetter...
  20. You set your heating at 24?? Yeah been similar here in my house. It was a chilly night last night with a low of 6°C, despite this I still managed a high of 18°C. In my bedroom it is currently 18.9°C with 74% humidity, so a bit on the damp side. Still felt comfortable wearing shorts and t-shirts both indoors and outdoors though. September is probably my favourite month of the year because It usually brings a lot of benign, quiet weather. it usually brings a lot of benign, quiet usable weather. Usually nothing too hot or too cold. Just pleasant comfortable conditions.
  21. 6.3 here. The first cold night for a while here. It’s now back to the more changeable Lancashire weather after experiencing a weeks lovely weather in Scarborough, while most of the country had a washout. Yesterday was wet but was mild and cleared up in the evening to leave a cold and clear night. That said today was pleasant and was comfortable in shorts and a t-shirt on my evening walk. September is probably my favourite month of the year for the weather, because the temperatures are very moderate, not much heat, not much cold, just comfortable conditions, the weather is often nice too - September is often a better month than August these days anyway. At the moment it is clear with a nice 3/4 moon. Currently 9°C with 89% humidity.
  22. Here in Lancashire, it wasn’t really an exceptional summer, apart from a couple of extremely hot days in July. It was a warm and dry summer for this part of the world, but nothing really exceptional here, just a pleasant summer. Summer 2018 was hotter here, in both June and July, although this August has been warmer and drier than August 2018. Unusually, August was the best summer month here. Usually it’s the worst. June was quite dry but also cool and cloudy at times. The last week of July was exceptionally dull here. So while being warmer and drier than average, it hasn’t been that sunny here. Similar to last summer, it was better than average, but apart from a couple of record breaking days, nothing exceptional here really.
  23. I’m surprised you say that. I remember you were both moaning a lot in June. As for my opinion in this summer, it was generally pleasant most of the time. Obviously hasn’t been as hot and dry as down south. Not too much rain. Would have liked it a bit cooler. It got too hot at times, especially those two extremely hot days in July. It was also quite dull at times too, especially during the last week of July, when I didn’t see the sun for a whole week! Overall, I’d say: Temperature - bit too warm Rain - Good Sunshine - A bit lacking. Not a bad summer though and certainly better than a lot of recent summers here.
  24. Well I’m on my way back home now. Been nice to have some time away from the house. Looking at the autumn thread it sounds like it’s been a washout the past week in most places. I’ve obviously been very lucky. While it has rained frequently it’s been mostly light and brief, apart from some heavier rain during a thunderstorm one afternoon. I haven’t needed a waterproof jacket once. The temps have been comfortable too, not too hot or too muggy. Looking at the forecast it doesn’t look too bad at at all, mostly dry and sunny , temps in the mid to upper teens. looks like I’ve missed the worst of the weather.
