  1. Apologies, it was 'in the absence of' that said that. I blame the covid
  2. Here's another In pictures: Nordic states gripped by winter freeze https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-67871751
  3. You said mainstream media never cover cold extremes.
  4. Beijing shivers through coldest December on record Beijing shivers through coldest December on record WWW.BBC.CO.UK Temperatures in the Chinese capital have frequently fallen below -10C this month.
  5. It's a great place to ski but maybe on this occasion all those hot runways melted the snow. https://www.crystalski.co.uk/ski-resorts/spain-ski-holidays/
  6. I'm trying to work out your motivation. Years back you were a mod and used to post the same old chocolate teapot picture (plus a few other regulars) in the mod thread. Now you post stuff from the models and give us all the 'low pressure' and 'no hope' postings. So do you have any time for the models or not? Or do you just these days post the bleak versions to enable you to have a pop at the more detailed posts from the teleconnections posters with their big words and long sentences?
  7. Ah, it's discredited old chestnut time of year again I see.
  8. Is there anything more sadly beautiful than this if you love the summer? https://youtu.be/4ZQWr7cF0eY An old friend back in the early 80s used to take delight in singing the first line from any time after mid August, normally when we were sitting outside a Bristol pub drinking and revelling in the outdoors. In hindsight I'm surprised we never went further than telling him to f off!
  9. Let us know what you're proposing by way of warnings please, and the audience they are seen by. I'm guessing you're happy for the scrutiny you apply to the MO, for example, to be applied to whatever the organisation is for whom you work?
  10. Hello on here, just a tiny post from me to say that this thread is great as it's balanced and kind with lots of knowledge being shared. I'm as far from technically knowledgeable as it's possible to be but I love writing about weather almost as much as I love living it and it's lovely to find this rather slower paced and thoughtful thread. Thanks.
  11. Onions peeling start now on the gain, balls round in shaping, primmed as we go and take the WAA into the heights.... and await the finish of model beats in minds ya'll so rememba no cold means that's shallot.
  12. Steady moderate rain in the Surrey Hills. Nothing convective. Wonderful evocative smell that comes from rain on hot ground after a warm and dry spell.
  13. Just got back from a walk. Roads and pavements round here are glazed with ice. Treacherous. Got away from the roads and headed up to a nearby ridge in the pitch dark at 150m with the head torch on full beam. A crusty layer of ice on top of the mud, thin dustings of now frozen snow illuminated by my light, a mobile sky full of stars in between the shifting clouds pushed on by the north easterly. Wonderful to hitch up again to the trusty Scarpa mountaineering boots.
  14. 1cm of snow in the places where it has actually settled. Not bad for 12 hours of falling. And all that at 110m asl. Dry and cold now. Breezy. Tempted to head out for a walk later but not convinced I'll need to dig out the crampons and ice axe just yet.
  15. Slight icy sound as the drizzle is flung against the window by a horrible gale. Deeply foul weather.
  16. Steady rain at 110m. 2.6c and dewpoint 1.3c. At least I only set the alarm for the cricket and not for snow!
  17. A small suggestion from someone born in 1965. Turn off your apps, log off the internet, light your paraffin heater with its purple liquid and heady aroma and fire up your coal fire. Make sure your net curtains in your bedroom are away from the glass so they don't freeze to the windows. Watch one or maybe all two forecasts a day on the BBC and supplement it with a look at the weather charts in your daily newspaper. After that, go out for a walk or 3, watch the clouds, check the wind direction. In an emergency when you are worried it might not snow, write a letter to someone that lives in a maybe more snowy place and post it first class. Ask what they are seeing. Enclose a SAE and you'll get a reply about 4 days later. By which time it will either have snowed or it won't and you won't need to worry any more. There will of course in the meantime be power cuts and a 3 day week plus a bit later some fear of a nuclear winter. But the main thing these days is to get in a ferment about whether promised snow has shown up on the festering Internet or not
  18. That gives me an idea for dealing with snow rampers. 'Where there's rain there's a claim'. Might get overrun with cases
  19. Light snow now in Reigate, -0.7c at my location, 110m. Streets were pretty slushy by mid afternoon although it didn't get above 0.5c. What was left had developed a soft icy crust by 7pm or so. This light stuff is a nice top up after the snow stopped around 1pm. I imagine that up top on the Downs at 230m there will have been a deeper fall and less melt. When the low clouds cleared earlier I could see back up to the tops and it looked like quite a lot of snow was holding up there. Fun day in hard times.
  20. Just been for a walk, beautiful. Snow has just about stopped here in Reigate. Still below freezing, -0.5c.
  21. Moderately heavy snow in Reigate for the last half hour, still coming down and settling everywhere. Temperature rising, not a surprise, but still below freezing at -1.3c
  22. Bizarre mix of snow and what looks like ice pellets just started in Reigate at 110m (for @Great Plum)
