  1. The 1960s - 1980s was generally a colder period for this country. The world started to get warmer from the 70s onwards but the UK only really started getting warmer around 1990. There were some very warm months between 1960 and 1990, but is was generally colder, compared to previous and more recent 30 year averages. What was the main reason why it was colder? Could it have been that aerosols (smog from factories) took a long time to be reduced compared to the rest of the world, or could it have been solar activity? Could it be something to do with Arctic sea Ice? I don't really know enough about Weather and Climate myself to know, so these are just guesses. It was probably something I have not even thought of.
  2. I don't think 2019 and 2020 can be described as poor. I don't think you can call it a poor summer when temperatures of over 30 degrees are reached in all 3 months. 2019 was really good, from late June right through to the end of the summer (first weekend of June was good though). Even 2021 was not that bad apart from August. I would probably rate 2019 and 2020 above 2016 and 2017.
  3. There have been 8 Hurricane Daniels (5 Hurricanes and 3 Tropical Storms, although I am not sure what the difference is) between 1978 and 2018, including one in 1988! Fortunately, none of them caused any casualties. They all occured in the Eastern Pacific Ocean around Hawaii.
  4. Have there been many years when temperatures over 30 degrees were reached in all 3 summer months? I know it has happened 4 times in the last 5 years (2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022), and I think it also happeened in 2015, even though that was not a very good summer overall. I don't think any summer from 2007-2014 managed it, but I don't know about before then. I would have thought that it would not have happened many times before 1990, I am not sure even 1976 managed it?
  5. I have noticed that the CET does not get adjusted down (by about 0.2 degrees) at the end of the month any more. Does it now get adjusted down every day or is not adjusted at all?
  6. Would this mean a wetter than average summer as well?
  7. I seem to remember a big thunderstorm that happenend in June 1998? I was at school at the time, and I think the teacher said we would all remember this day. I think it took place sometime in the early afternoon, don't know the exact time. I am from South East England (Hertfordshire), so I am sure anyone on this forum who lived nearby at the time would remember it. I don't know how widespread it was. I am pretty sure it was June, but maybe it was late May?
  8. I was surprised to find out that the record temperatre for Ibiza is only 38.4 degrees, which is 2 degrees less than the record for the UK. A record temperature of 38.4 degrees seems quite low for a Mediterranean Island. I would have expected the record to be well over 40 degrees, when you consider that mainland Spain has a record temperature of 51 degrees. Even Majorcas record temperature is only 41.5, higher than the UK record but not by that much. I find it hard to believe that the UK record temperature is higher than the Ibiza record. Do any weather experts know why this could be?
  9. Thanks for the reply. This amateur weather station in Hampstead, has an excellent website. It shows the minimum , maximam and mean temperature for every day since 2009. The mean temperature seems to be calulated in a different way. The maximum temperature for yesterday (18th December) was 9.6 and minimum temperature -1.9. The mean temperature was 2.6. That seems to be lower that what it should be if you were adding maximum and minimum and dividing by 2. That would give a mean temperature of 3.85? http://nw3weather.co.uk/wxdataday.php?vartype=tmean&year=2022
  10. I am not sure how mean temperature is worked out for days? The mean temperature of any month is calculated by adding together the mean temperatures of every day of the month and then dividing that by the number of days in that month. Is a similar thing done for daily mean temperatures? Is a reading taken at a weather station every hour, and then the hourly readings are added together at the end of the day and divided by 24, or is it just a case of adding together the minimum and maximum temperatures of any day and then dividing by 2?
  11. I have a Question for BFTV or Quicksilver1989. A new study has just been published by climate scientists. There are some denier blogs (Paul Homewood and Net Zero Watch) that have jumped on this, and have said that it claims that natural climate vaiability is mainly responsible for climate change, and not CO2. Are they taking this study out of context? http://journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/clim/35/24/JCLI-D-22-0081.1.xml
  12. Started snowing where I live (Hertfordshire) about 10pm. Seems to have stopped now. Was not forecast on the BBC website. Would like to see some snowman pictures on here.
  13. Do you think there is a good chance the 2014 record will not be broken by 2022? December could be well below average.
  14. Do you think that there is a good chance that 2022 will not become the warmest year in the CET record? It was mentioned on a another thread that we would need a CET of over 1.4 to overtake 2014.
  15. Colder winters do seem to happen at the end of solar cycles with odd numbers (21, 23 etc). The end of solar cycle 23 in 2008 did coincide with colder than average winters, but the end of solar cycle 24 did not (at least not in the UK). The end of solar cycle 21 coincided with the cold winter of 86/87. Maybe we will get a very cold winter at the end of solar cycle 25 in 2030?
  16. Ok, what is going to cause our winters to become much colder? A Grand Solar Minimum?, maybe sea ice increasing? What do you think is responsible for our recent winters being milder?
  17. Does warmer SSTs = higher minimum temperatures, and stronger sun = higher maximum temperatures?
  18. Is there a chance that the record minimum CET could also be broken?
  19. Does March also have greater temperature variation potential than what November does? March also has had more days above 20 degrees historically than November, despite being a colder month in general.
  20. Interestingly in the Summer 08 to Summer 13 cold period, 2011 was one of the warmest years in the UK. We have not had a year since 2013 when the annual CET has been below 10 degrees. According to Piers Corbyn, 2013 is when the mini ice age is supposed to have begun. Something to do with solar cycles apparantly, although I don't really take him seriously.
  21. There does not seem to be many years when we have had a poor summer, but the rest of the year has been warm. 2011 is certainly one example. Most of the year temperatures were above average apart from the 3 summer months (June was ok, July and August were awful). There were 2 very warm spells in April and late September/early October. 2007 was also a very warm year (12th in the CET), but the summer was nothing to write home about. Maybe 2002 as well? Can't really think of any more years. Does anyone have any more examples?
  22. One thing that I have noticed since I started taking an interest in the weather and climate, is that April seems to have had more days with a maximum temperature of over 20 degrees (historically) than October despite being a colder month. April seems to have more extremes of hot and cold than what October does. Another thing I have noticed is that spring seems to feel warmer than the autumn. 19 degrees in March feels warmer than 19 degrees in September. Is it to do with the strength of the sun?
  23. Is next weekend now a write off as far as hot weather is concerned, or is there still a chance that the heatwave could extend into Saturday? The BBC website is showing 23 °C for next Saturday, and the Met Office 25 °C.
