    ICON 12z looks better than the 00z to me comparing the t180 chart to the updated t177. Not a bad start to the afternoon at least.

    Rising heights to the north at t192 on the GFS, let’s see if it’s enough to make a difference this time... UKMO on the other hand looks a bit grim at t144.

    Atlantic definitely struggling more on the 18z, still in a continental flow at t180.

    The suggestion of ridging towards Greenland is back in the GFS extended. At least that’s one very small crumb of comfort for now.

    We aren’t at rock bottom until the NASA model and individual GEM ensembles start getting rolled out.

    I’m hopeful for a bit of wet snow in Cambridge on Friday but I’m not expecting much. Looking longer-term, the EC 12z still holds interest out to day 10 but I’m hoping we start to see some proper blocking appearing more regularly soon. Would be great if the Greenland high on the morning GFS runs made another appearance soon.

    I’ve noticed that the 6:00 runs have tended to favour blocking recently only to revert on the 12:00 runs. The back end of the 00z today was also blocked though. But even if there is an issue with the GFS, the ECMWF/GEM runs have mostly been blocked recently as well.

    I hope the pub run had a substantial meal with its alcohol, maybe a scotch egg. Not a bad run though, glad to see the blocking signal is at least still there despite the messy run earlier on.

    Not a bad ICON 18z out to t120. Would definitely feel cold in the slack flow and there’s a decent amount of amplification upstream as well.

    I’m convinced some people wait for a milder run to instantly churn out a load of posts about how winter is over. Bizarre behaviour.

    This aged like a fine wine. There’s plenty of potential for a cold spell at the moment even if nothing comes of the model output. I’ve seen far worse model output than this, particularly in recent Decembers.
