Achfary does indeed, 28/12/2019 IIRC. It's the site office for the Duke of Westminster's estate office in the village. The site isn't automatic like most reports we receive. The readings are taken manually at 0900 each day, hence the delay in the report being received. Reckon they'll be painting another phone box as celebration (there's one of our members who will know what I mean).

I seem to remember reading the Met conclusion after the Achfary UK Dec record a few years ago. It wasn’t a true foehn as we know it; The air wasn’t lifted from sea level over the mountains as it approached, it was already very warm at height. Once it reached the mountains it was mixed down by turbulence from the strong winds. Only saying what I read, not knowledge based!

Model Output Discussion - Spring Has Sprung
dryfie replied to Community Team's topic in Forecast Model Discussion
With regard to the name of this thread; overnight output was suggesting absolute maxima of 15c for NE Scotland today (particularly Moray), with cooler weather to the NW. In the event it has been only around 10c in the NE whilst a new UK record approaching 20c has been reported in the NW Highlands. Any thoughts on how the models could have been so far out (they know about foehns)? -
New UK January and Scotland winter temperature record
dryfie replied to MattStoke's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Don’t forget that although official stations, they still need to be verified. Presumably checking accuracy of thermometry, exposure etc. Also, this is the same area as Achfary, site of UK highest recorded December temperature (18.7). Once their daily readings are received they could be higher. -
New UK January and Scotland winter temperature record
dryfie replied to MattStoke's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Problem is that it's only around 9c in the NE of Scotland. These are all in the far NW: Kinlochewe 19.2 Cassley 17.2 Resallach 17.1 Loch Glasgarnoch 17.0 Achnagart 17.0 -
Daily weather observations - January 22nd to January 28th
dryfie replied to Summer Sun's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
New Scots date record - 16.4 at Kinlochewe has exceeded the previous 15.0 at the same location in 1993. Several other official sites around the same readings, with several more hours remaining. Edit - UK date record -
My quote button seems to have done a runner, but to answer earlier queries.......I had to chuckle during Isha when the film crews turned up at Salsburgh village to see what conditions were like at this apparent extreme wind speed location. But if you pinpoint the reporting station on a map you'll see that it's not nearby. In fact it's up high on a hill a mile or two from the village, at the foot of the transmission mast visible from the M8. Not high enough to be called a mountain station, but certainly not typical of area villages.

Radiosonde measurements updates: Lerwick 15/2300 Nil 16/1200 Surface -2.3 850mb -10.9 and dew point -12.0 Stornoway Neither received Albemarle (on border near Corbridge) 15/2300 Surface -2.7 850mb -9.3 and dew point -19.3 16/1100 Surface 0.6 850mb -5.9 and dew point -6.5 All of these missing soundings could be having an effect on quality of forecasts?

Snow depths at official stations 1100: Lerwick 17cm, Altnaharra 12cm, Dyce 12cm, Wick 10cm, Stornoway 8cm, Loch Glasgarnoch 7cm, Kirkwall 5cm, Aboyne 4cm, Tulloch Bridge 2cm, Aviemore 2cm. Don't have figures, but 8cm at Stornoway is probably not common. 3cm here pretty much as forecast on ITV Border, but much less than BBC Scotland.

Scotland Weather discussion
dryfie replied to Paul's topic in Scotland / Alba Community Group's Scottish Weather Discussion
All - A day or so ago there was a message on the MAD thread calling a model prediction of cold weather ‘carnage’. Knowing something about the subject I replied that the word shouldn’t be used unless the meaning was known. I noticed that my message disappeared a little while later, and I’ve since received a message of admonishment, informing me that ‘carnage’ could be slang, and anyway it wasn’t my business. There doesn’t seem to be any method of actually cancelling my netweather membership, so I’ll be signing out this evening for the last time. -

Think the power station chimney ties that down as north end of Lockerbie? -

Took a while to happen, but inevitable.......with a current max of around 7c I think it's safe to say this has been the first day this autumn when we've failed to get into double figures, though we've had some close calls. Looks as if it's the same story nationwide, even on the islands. -

Another really weird day! Hard frost last night, but lunchtime everybody in town in summer attire (12c). A week ago the outside toms were still ripening well, but spent this afternoon clearing dead plants from tunnel, despite cover and fleece. Chillis and peppers were already indoors to be safe. Surprised to see cape gooseberries still ok. More cloud around now, so perhaps less cold? -

Testament to the strength of our sun that, even at this time of the year , in only 13c, if you find shelter from the admittedly light wind, it can be lovely. An afternoon of unbroken sunshine in shorts and T Shirts. Incongruous to be putting fleece out and bringing plants in for the winter!
