  1. New record September max for West Freugh (near Stranraer). Was 25.2c on 22/9/1991 and 8/9/2021. Currently 25.4c.
  2. New record September max for West Freugh (near Stranraer). Was 25.2c on 22/9/1991 and 8/9/2021. Currently 25.4c.
  3. Highest September record maxima. 4. Indeed, 0600 report shows air min of 2.4c and grass -1 (only reported to nearest whole degree). AAXX 02064 03080 05983 03005 10039 20038 30038 40212 53005 60002 333 10161 20024 3/101 60005 70000 91006 90710 91106=
  5. It could be worse. After a few days with only light showers and at least some sunshine here, we've again had light winds and decent temps. Hopefully the grot will remain where it belongs in the south next weekend.
  6. I see that Chris Blanchette has been promoted(?) to the national forecast along with Stav. Will they be giving wee Calum his chance?
  7. Not high in absolute terms, but the current temp of 18.6c at Kirkwall (in the Orkneys, that's north of the UK mainland for southrons) is quite noteworthy for this location, where the absolute max is 27c. The much vaunted NW/SE split seems to be from about Tiree to Saxa Vord space station.
  8. Yet another travel program on BBC Scotland (very welcome as they are generally good) and yet again the weather is brilliant, with blue skies and cracking visibility. This is the same for every rambling/walking/climbing/cooking/farming prog we are presented with. Are the production companies very lucky, or do they have access to better forecasts than the rest of us?
  9. Shame for the many kids returning to skool today, with 23c and little cloud, but at least they started during the June summer. Others (locally) not back for another week, so can still enjoy a few good days. So overall a pretty good spell of weather up in the north, helped by the overall favourable NW/SE split.
  10. Looks as if it has been a good year for pupils at the Academy, despite reportedly poor national results. Air is full of BBQ aromas and an unplanned street party has developed. Some folk just shouldn’t wear shorts! Fine celebration, with half the nations schools returning next week. Good weather to end hols with.
  11. We’ve had a number of hefty showers today, including right now. However, the clouds have never looked particularly threatening, (my book says stratocumulus with embedded cumulus), so not sure what the difference is? Showers slow moving so reasonably prolonged, but never dark and threatening. Low winds means vertical rain.
  12. Yup, last hourly sunshine reported was 0900 27th July. I’d be very surprised if such a bit of kit has just been withdrawn. Wait…….no I’m not.
  13. Yes, it's that day again. This July is 8.26kWhs, just above 8.14 in 2016 and 8.12 in 2019. Highest was 12.52 in 2013. Sloping roof, 12 panels due south.
  14. Difficult to be sure of Scotland figures, as contender for highest UK mainland, Leuchars, has data missing end of month. No daily totals available for 28th or 30th, with hourly reports also incomplete for these days. Best estimates for 28th and 30th each 6 hours. Monthly totals are Leuchars 177.6hrs (est) and Tiree 166.9hrs.
  15. Just the top quarter. Looks nice in Scandinavia!
  16. Not sure which entry to quote wrt mean temps as there have been so many. It’s quite obvious that some do not comprehend the difference between mean temp and mean maximum temp! A value of 24c is reasonable for a mean summer month maximum. For a mean temp of 24c it requires (for example) a mean daily max of 28c and a mean daily min of 20c. Really?
  17. No need, I can tell you. 19c here, with the ocnl passing shower. Above Perth we're into the north of the UK, where Fyvie Castle in Aberdeenshire is 22c, and Tain near Inverness is 20. This compares to 17c in Carlisle and 15c at Shap. It's a funny old world!
  18. Buffoon on ITV just displayed July mean temps. UK overall listed at 12.6, but each of the four nations showed values of at least 13.1. Shurely shum mishtake?
  19. Honestly? http://starlingsroost.ddns.net/weather/ukobs/customdailysunshine_map.php?startdate=2023-07-01&enddate=2023-07-24&minus_days=0 This month the East Neuk with 150 hours way above anywhere in the southwest of england (max 126 hours). Dunbar not plotted on this chart but standing at 157 hours for same period. Overall, Scotland has been sunniest region most months this spring/summer, but it doesn't seem to get mentioned.
  20. Looks to me as if Tiree is sunnier. If the East Neuk total was shown then this would be much higher still.
  21. Indeed it was, but I've spent a decent day gardening. It was also meant to be particularly cold in the Highlands. Looking at the WeatherObs chart for 4pm I can see only two sites in the whole of the UK in the 20s. That's Achnagart in Ross & Cromarty with 21.6c at that time, and Aultbea in the same area with 20.0c. BBC forecasters busily coming up with reasons why they could be ignored.
  22. And that’s exactly what I didn’t say. I specifically said that reasonable air use was acceptable, just not over obstensious use for the sake of it.
  23. For many years we’ve chosen not to fly, to give the kids a better chance to have a world to live in. They’ve continued this of their own accord for future children. In general I accept the right of anybody to have their own values, and not follow suit. Any family deserves a nice summer holiday, and many here have done so since schools closed three weeks ago, taking advantage of lower flight costs before English schools shut. What I take exception to is, having already had four weeks of overseas holidays, people would take a flight for a three day holiday just because it’s cheap due lack of demand. Folk have a right to sensible holidays, not to ruin the planet for others who can afford nothing. A couple of weeks ago we booked out of a Telford hotel. Receptionist asked where we were driving to, and we replied Scotland. “Oh Scotland, that’s on my bucket list”.
