  1. Neighbours just returned from a three day (I kid you not!) jaunt to Corfu. Complaining bitterly about the heat and how nobody warned them. They kept asking what was causing all this, and it took great constraint to avoid telling them it was partially selfish bastards like themselves. They were quite upset to find us sitting out in a sunny 22c sipping ouzo (much cheaper in Lidl than in Tesco BTW).
  2. There were a few times today when I thought that if this carried on into the evening we could be having flooding. Glad to say that the heavier stuff died out mid afternoon and it's now dry. General totals not that great (13mm at Carlisle, 7mm Eskdalemuir) but short term intensities quite alarming.
  3. Surprisingly splendid day down here. Dry, cloud generally about half sky cover, temp 21c and wind nowhere near as vicious as feared. That being said, it's looking as if the East Neuk might be best place to be today. River level dropping as I watch.
  4. I was there only a couple of weeks ago, and found it hard to understand it being flooded. It's some way from the river, and from the car park you climb a lot of steps to get to it. IIRC you went down steps to the entrance, so that might cause localised flooding. Brilliant building BTW. Set us thinking how poorly served we are by the TV; Endless programs about Cornwall, Dorset and Yorkshire, but you never see anything about the likes of places like Tewksbury and Malvern (again with a beautiful priory). Perhaps it's not a bad thing though, as coverage of the other places just warns what you can expect there!
  5. Don't shed any tears. That's what was forecast for today, but instead there's places up there in the 20's outwith showers.
  6. I can't speak for the whole of the continent but I do recall that in Germany they work out the daily mean in a different way. Stand to be corrected, but I think it was the max plus the min plus 1200 all divided by three. This does give more influence to the daytime temps. Would be pleased to hear from an expert.
  7. Was able to finish soft fruit harvesting yesterday before the rain. Biggest crop we've seen in 20 years, with 6lb redcurrants from one plant. Blackcurrants and blaeberries also cropped very well. Presumably down to the warm and sunny June, with rain this month to fatten them up. Plum trees blossom first and were victims of late frosts. These destroyed much of the lower blossoms with only higher branches surviving above the frost level. The apples were a few weeks later and missed the frosts, and are also producing an amazing harvest. The 'June drop' has been enormous, and continues in todays breeze, but still a large crop in the trees. Shame about the size of 'the drop', but fortunately there's a local pig farmer who will gladly take apples, whatever the size. Pleasantly surprised with what today brings, with plenty of bright sunshine and a good drying wind. Showers about though.
  8. Yes, same here with as many showers as yesterday. The UK north and south is poor, whilst the midlands (Manc to Carlisle) are having the best of it.
  9. Highest from up north are Leuchars 69.0 and Aberdeen 59.8
  10. Latest reservoir levels (7th July): https://www.scottishwater.co.uk/Your-Home/Your-Water/Managing-Water-Resources/Scotlands-Water-Resource-Levels Big improvement (up 13%) in 'West' (Ayrshire, Argyll & Bute) but pretty static elsewhere.
  11. Latest Scottish reservoir levels (7th July): https://www.scottishwater.co.uk/Your-Home/Your-Water/Managing-Water-Resources/Scotlands-Water-Resource-Levels Big improvement (up 13%) in 'West' (Ayrshire, Argyll & Bute) but pretty static (still low) elsewhere.
  12. No jest. Absolute sincerity. Others, who revel in extremes, should give a thought to how it affects folk.
  13. Good grief! A sensible comment on this forum. The sort of talk could get you banned.
  14. Just happened to look at the sites with lowest current wind speeds on WeatherObs. They are both Scottish mountain stations. I'm sure that there will be a technical reason why this is the case today, but can't come up with one myself. Convective situation? Upper low is closer aloft than it is at the surface? Anybody any ideas please?
  15. Last night’s rain bought 16mm at Eskdalemuir, and for the first time in months the Dryfe has visibly risen. Back to a gorgeous day again with 23c and barely a cloud in the sky. Hard to believe that there are storms not really that far away to the south.
  16. Just a few drops of rain lunchtime from light showers, then dry and warm. Now infrequent thunder with leaden skies to the SW, and two minutes later very heavy rain.
  17. Bon voyage mate! Last Sunday south on M6, four hours stationary near Preston, followed by a diversion through the town. Returning today from Telford, an hours delay near Stoke, another half hour south of border. To keep on topic……max 28 around Manc, falling with more cloud to eventually 22 here. Apparently rain last night, but still looks lusher to the south. Finally, isn’t Tebay services a magnificent place!
  18. Not so I’m afraid. Before I travelled south last weekend my neighbour asked if my outside pots (toms, chillis, peppers etc.) needed watering. I explained that a N/S split was forecast, and that my plants would get plenty of rain. She has apparently had to ignore me as she could no longer watch the poor things dying in the ongoing drought. Yesterday we were at Bourton-on-the-Water in the Cotswolds in persistent rain, temp 11c. Southron forecasters love N/S splits and frequently wet their little pants explaining the dire consequences for their sad northern cousins. Congrats to them for this weeks split, but unfortunately their split was in the opposite way to that forecast.
  19. So that's it......schools in half the UK nations have now broken up for the 'summer' holidays. The weather continues good up here for most folk, with sporadic rain keeping the ground moist (but nowhere near enough rain yet), sensible temperatures, and a decent amount of coastal sunshine. Obviously not so good for the kids, but many Scots families take overseas holidays in the next few weeks, before the rest break up. Flights costs are much cheaper, especially from Newc or Manc. Hopefully twill be better when they return to home shores.
  20. Reservoir levels continue to fall, but more slowly since recent sporadic rain. Down 2% on the week. More rain please! Water Resources - Scottish Water WWW.SCOTTISHWATER.CO.UK
  21. Apparently Logan Botanic Gardens (Rhins of Galloway) broke through the 300 hour barrier yesterday afternoon (personal communication). Doesn't appear on Ogimet so don't know details. Seems to agree with other coastal Irish Sea sites in North Wales and D&G.
  22. Reservoir levels still falling, but now more slowly (2%/week). Water Resources - Scottish Water WWW.SCOTTISHWATER.CO.UK
  23. GENUKI: County Map of Scotland, .All of Scotland WWW.GENUKI.ORG.UK County Map of Scotland .All of Scotland genealogy Total 33. You'll struggle with No.9, but 7 is ok.
  24. I’m very impressed that you’ve covered all the Scottish counties. Who do you have for Peeblesshire?
