I remember a front coming down from the north giving a few cm in late December 2001. It stuck around for a few days. I still remember tracking it on the met office radar when it was a more basic and on good old dial up internet 😂...the radar  still not much better now really, netweather is better. That was it for snow in that winter, January and February was very mild.. Year earlier we had a cold spell again in the December a bit more intense, remember waking up to a good covering just after xmas and hearing the airport had shut. Winter 2000-2001 was quite good overall better than the previous one, had more snow in the February too. I remember it was my last year in high school and in the February skipping school with mates and going sledging on the hills but we got told off by a farmer being on his land plus it was the time of foot and mouth

Ah, the one you mention I think is the one I remember. Snowed a few times after Christmas and into new year I think! Yes, forecasting and radar still a tricky business by the looks of it!😬

Yet again this is looking like another year with little or no Winter weather. I can just pray we do not get a repeat of last years Summer. Just a normal sub 30c summer will do. I think we can say Winters are now really the exception, a thing of the past sadly. The UK's climate is changing for the worse with out a doubt.

Honestly, I think this all depends where you live. We've had 2 significant cold spells, the first one with deep cold for 7 to 10 days. Some have had some good snowfalls too. December colder than average. I've known far far worse winters

Yes I suppose it depends where you are. I've never actually had a snowless winter in this part of Manchester (Tameside) there's always been at least a dusting at some point, even last winter's dire attempt there was a brief one. But I'm not including the decent 4 inches at the end of November. In the Winter 2020-21 I'd agree that there was more snow than usual. Had about 5 separate coverings, something like that but nothing particularly heavy. Best snow I've seen? Feb 1991 easterly, got some decent pictures somewhere too. Jan 2010 comes close though. Don't remember Jan 87 being only little but my mum said she couldn't push my buggy as the snow was bad. So kept me inside for a few days until it started to thaw.

Am always jealous of those a bit higher up in Manchester! Pretty low down where I am. I do remember Feb 91, it was snowing really heavy in Manchester but don't think it settled low down. Strangely I don't remember the 87 one and I was in my 20's. Super cold I remember. For Stockport I think 2010 the deepest in my lifetime. 79 maybe, think it was similar. Do you remember 2001 around the new year where we kept getting snow showers on and off for about a week? Never very deep but kept on coming. Only powder snow I remember was the 2018 one. Incredible

Greece looking like the place to be about a week on Monday as the Euro high works in their favour dragging in bitter air around it's eastern periphery. The Aegean sea becomes a snow machine. Istanbul in Turkey probably getting a clobbering too. The locals in Greece say snow is actually becoming more common. Shame we can't say that! 😂

This is what the above can bring to Athens.

I'd love that! ☃️ I actually think we've had more snowfalls in Manchester this last few years than usual. The last 3 including this one we've had proper snowfalls albeit just a couple of cm each time. Also 2018 was a belter in stockport when it leapt over the pennines for a couple of hours. 2021 we had 3 or 4 falls. In the 80s and 90s we often went for many years at a time with nothing other than the famous winters 79, 81, 2010 which brought deep snow. And the strange Jan 96 easterly bringing 6 inches!! The recent ones didn't turn to rain either though they were just showers though. I prefer that tbh, snowy breakdowns are rubbish for Manc!!

End of December 95 was very cold in Glasgow when I stayed there, it was like -18/20C and I remember being asked to go and run the cars in the driveway to stop them from freezing too much. If I'm correct it was a lobe of high pressure than came down from the polar area over iceland into the uk? a very unusual set up which thawed as quickly as it cam leading to lots of burst pipes!

Absolutely!!! Think it got to - 15 in Manc. 6 Jan 2010 was the coldest night I remember here, went down to -18. And we'd had a memorable snowfall the night before which I imagine was even better for you if you were in Scotland at the time!!☃️

Think I like the quricky things in life!

So, a two week freeze in December, with some seeing proper snowfall.

A near two week ( unmodelled) cold spell in January with severe frosts and snowfall again for the lucky.

Who would bet their house against another cold spell in February of equal length?

Patterns often emerge at any time of year..

Could the next one be the one that really delivers on a more widespread scale?

    Who's with me?

    I will say yes.

I get puzzled by some of the posts that suggest' just another rubbish winter' . By any standards this winter has given 2 cold spells (not snaps) with some great snow in some locations. Not one of the memorable cold and snowy winters but they are few and far between and if we're being honest always have been. I reckon clusters of cold winters come every 15 years 63, 79, 96, 2010.......... . Maybe this winter is the precursor to something special in next few years. Certainly winters have got milder generally but weirdly where I live in Manchester seems to get more snow years than in the past

  7. December 2010 without a doubt. The coldest December since records began and snow levels in parts of the country were off the scale! Remember pictures of the higher parts of Sheffield which  I believe brought 2 feet of lying snow! Forget drifts, that just depends how windy it was. Dickens would have been proud. 1981 was memorable as well and an excellent runner up!

  8. The 80's were very cold years definitely though the 87 crazy cold was short lived. Global warming has definitely made its mark on winters though not so sure summers have changed that much in terms of average temps.   I do remember though a run of very mild winters in the early 70's and I believe the early 1900's were pretty snowless for the large part. My point is, it can change on a sixpence and thats the weather. Lets not forget Dec 10 was the coldest December in living memory

Aye I suppose if we're no burried in snow then nice sunny crisp mornings like this is a second best...certainly beats mild wet crap.

Correct about not seeming to have snowy breakdowns anymore, instead it's just a slow creeping of milder temps to mix out the cold.  Still we've got the fabled beasterly to look forward too...or at least you would think so reading the mod thread.

Yeah, know what you mean about not having the snowy breakdowns. What I've noticed in Manchester though these last few years isnthat weve had more west north west snow showers heavy enough to give a nice covering

Just trying to get my head around this.

a chart 16 days away is predicting winter is over?

I fail to see the difference to this post than those on New Year’s Day declaring the same thing. Winter is over and it’s a long haul back and yet by the 14th it was cold again with snow.

Yes and that seems to be the story of this winter.  GFS gets at lot of flack but correctly stuck to its guns for extending current cold spell. Met and bbc eventually reflected this but took a while. Been one of the better winters I think

Latest output is crap , think it is now just  dawning in mod thread that there ain't gonna be no Scandi high or greeny high coming to the rescue , another snowless winter for me looks on the cards

I guess all this depends on where you live. We've had 3 years of snowfall now in Manchester and they've all been pretty good. Snowed  4 separate times early 2021. I remember some long snowless periods in first half of 70's. Even though 80s were cold we usually missed out bar the epic 81/82 So not all bad!!!

It was mainly coastal with places like Blackpool having their heaviest falls for years but up here in the Pennines we had a decent fall of about 6 inches so I expect Manchester would have had something.

the main reason I remember it was that we have moved into a new house the week before and i remember my first attempt at clearing snow off the drive.

    done it many times since.

Yes I must have been this one. Always thought it was from an easterly but now realise that wasn't the case. That volume doesn't come from an easterly this side of pennines. Think 2018 brought 3 to Manc from the  beast bit that's exceptional and all within a couple of hours. Only time I remember powder snow. Minus 5 at time

Amazing! Do you remember if this was the event that brought Manchester snow?? Got a feeling it was late January for Manc from an easterly or maybe this one I don't know!  This current one could be one for the album if radar checks out. Jan 10 the best I can remember in my nearly 60 years in this wonderful city. If I d been 10 years older I would remember 63, England world cup qnd could have been a mod! Damn it!!!😁
