For Manc 5th Jan to 11th Jan 1.5 below. 12th to 18th 4 below. 2.75 below for the 2 weeks. So very cold 2 weeks based on 91 to 2010. Not sure cet but think over the 2 weeks it would be borderline cold very cold fortnight. Week from 12th very cold either way. Damn, I wished these cold spells lasted longer!!!!

2023 probably was the 2007/2012 repeat. Given the changes we've incurred since then, that's likely as bad as it gets these days. Also when you consider we supposedly had all the right setups for a 2010 deep blast of Arctic air, and yet all we get out of it is a week of below average temps, it's fair to assume that such patterns will struggle immensely to repeat themselves against background forces such as the consequences of termination shock and increasingly persistent Iberian highs.
Agree with most of what you say, but where did you get the impression that we were set up for a Jan 10 set up?? The only things I heard like that were heresay. None of the main forecasters suggested that. In any winter this would have been classed as a very cold spell. The likes of Jan 2010 are few and far between in my lifetime. Only Jan's I remember were 1979, 1981 ish, 1985 and 2010! 1987 was brief but severe

Not so keen using this term "we are way overdue", but from a statistical point, we are way over due a notably cold February. Last such one was February 1991.
We have had January 2010, December 2010 and even March 2013 but we've not had a February of similar equivalence in terms of temperature anomaly.
Yes, February's are truly awful nowadays. Fingers crossed and let's hope the weather behaves. My optimism based on credible forecasts for Feb. As to how cold though, not sure. Feb 18nwas memorable but I as all about 1 week though really

The beautiful villages of the Southern Lake District have had 2 direct hits this winter and how pretty they were. Calenders will picture postcode for next year
Picture postcodes! Apologies

Just done a few checks and Manchester has had decent snowfalls for 6 out of last 7 years. Maybe the lack of easterlies in recent years is our friend!!

Been a belting cold spell. Widespread frosts and some good snow as well. If only Jan was for just these last 2 weeks. Would have been a very cold month! It's these pesky mild periods which seem to be so mild nowadays. Whatever's going on with the weather, my neck of the woods been good for snowfalls for a few years now

This time 10 years ago, we were in depths of the worst "winter" in terms of wintriness probably for at least a century. Just 3 air frosts during the whole of the meteorological winter. A Manchester winter index of just 7
Wow, that was the winter from hell for anyone who enjoys wintry weather. We've had more wintry weather this week then we did in the whole of that meteorological winter
Currently -9.5°C
Anyone coldies 1got a good feeling about Feb?? 2nd week onwards I reckon. The SSW may have an effect

Strange, I live 6 miles south of Manc at 210 feet and snow pretty much gone. Came into Manchester and there's still a covering in a few places. Manc 100 feet. Must have been a bit heavier just a fee miles away

Has gone very grey and getting very organised, big flakes coming down on top of what we already have. This is already the biggest snow event here for a LONG time.
Since 2018 you think??

No rapid thaw here. Should still be snow on ground tonight which, with any luck, will stick around till weekend. Could be some sneaky snow showers Thursday also. TBH, am banking this one!
12 minutes ago, Gary L said:It's quite sad that this likely wouldn't be so marginal pre global warming. Reduced sea ice, Arctic amplification, increased SSTs all seem likely to put 1-2c on this event?
Not convinced. Were always marginal in low areas and no real melt here yet. Even as a kid they often turned to slush

Moderate to heavy now in Stockport
11 minutes ago, Frigid said:Yes it's quite the rare event. Possibly due the ground being rock solid from last night's frost. The perfect conditions for snow cover.
Brings to mind I think it was 20 Dec 2009

According to Manchester Airport, 21 days of falling snow was reported but it was nothing significant. I remember seeing snow falling from a blue sky that February. Amazing.
Amazing month, as was Jan 85!

Love easterlies but this type are just right for us!
