Line of very heavy showers to the East of here now, but no sferics yet and no thunder heard. They look promising though. Earlier all the action was West of here, now it seems to be mainly East of here! Just moderate rain here now, with a couple of rumbles earlier in the day being the highlight so far. EDIT: Strike showing on Netweather detector now, in the showers east of Nottingham, and they've got heavier on the latest radar update.

This is the scene looking south from Nottingham at the moment, not bad for the time of day, and it's improved since I took this... Looks like things are getting going west of here on the radar, I'm just worried it will all slide by to the south of Nottingham like yesterday. It's interesting that the power station smoke is going very straight up and going higher than normal. I guess that's a good sign of convection if it's being pulled higher. Very impressed by the new Netweather lightning detector. Shows 5 strikes just south of Telford.

Got a good feeling about today. For some reason when I got up and looked outside I felt like I was in America on the storm chase. I think it's the feeling of anticipation and the early convection and the fact that I'm wearing a t-shirt that I haven't worn since I was last out there! Also good to see the Met Office mention thundery showers in the text forecast again, which they had removed from the forecast last night. Another day of radar and sky watching to come

Lovely photo Harry! Finally some more showers approaching Nottingham and they seem to be gaining intensity a little. I'm just frustrated that I can't see what's heading this way, my view in this flat is excellent, but I can only see south. 16:05 radar has updated and still looking good, my strike alert has just beeped too, 24-40 miles. Also a very nice looking cell is going to pass north of Nottingham. EDIT: That cell that passed over Sheffield is really intensifying and about to hit Worksop with rain rates of around 200mm/hr!

Not a lot happening here in Nottingham so far. We had quite a heavy rain/hail shower earlier but it's dry now and we are in a clear slot on the radar at the moment. Keeping an eye on the showers S and SE of Manchester now. Got my new camera delivered today (Nikon P510), so if anything does come this way, I'll certainly get some pics uploaded.

Entered. Such an amazing prize. I won't be building my hopes up too much but I will be a little excited on Sunday 15th April.

Chase 2011 - Your Favourite Photo..
multi cellular thunderstorm replied to Paul's topic in Storm Chase USA
Some amazing photos so far! Being on Tour 1 last year was pretty frustrating, but still got a few pics and had a great time. So devastating not being able to go this year, the first Spring since 2008 that I won't be going chasing. Been having loads of dreams about it recently which just makes it even worse. One of the dreams was bad though, we didn't even bother flying to the USA because prospects were so bad, we stayed in a hotel at Heathrow for the whole time until the last day when we drove to Wales because there was a slight chance of thundery showers haha. Anyway hope everyone who is going this year has the most amazing time, and sees a lot of action. It's honestly the best thing I've ever done and I can't wait until the day I can come again. -
I'm in Warthill, near York tonight. Me and my girlfriend picked a good weekend to come up here from Nottingham, it's beautiful here. It was -8.5C on the car when we got here at 10pm, I think it's probably colder now. I've just been outside in the village and taken some photos which I have uploaded here if you're interested... http://forum.netweather.tv/topic/72563-night-time-village-snow-photos/ Looking forward to a beautiful morning later, going to try to get up and out early for some more pics.

I've just been outside my girlfriends house in Warthill, just outside of York, to take a few photos. Thankfully there are no streetlights in the village. It's about -8C out there and still about 4 inches of snow. Hope you like them. Going to try to get up and out early in the morning and maybe get some more photos. Mark.

Still no ppn here in Nottingham, and I've just been out and not even the odd spot blowing in the breeze. I think we will have to wait for the main band before getting any ppn in this area. On the subject of freezing rain there are a couple of events that stick in my mind. First was a few years back in Stanley, County Durham one morning when everything was coated in inch thick ice and people couldn't even get in their cars! I remember trying to cross a road and the button on the traffic lights was encased in ice. Another time was in the Lake District, December 2007, it was very beautiful but so difficult to walk or drive anywhere. Here is a pic from that day, showing the weight of the ice on the tree and it's hard to tell but that path was impossible to walk on! I just wish my photography skills were a bit better back then, it was so beautiful I could have got some amazing photos if I'd known what I was doing. Anyway back to today...

Looks like you're going to do well up there Peter, especially with the Met Office extending their warning. You should get some nice drifting too. I'm not so confident about Nottingham beating Consett any more. Is this ppn moving in faster than expected? Looks like it will reach Nottingham in under 2 hours and I wasn't expecting it until at least 4pm.

Just as well because if it was a 3pm Saturday it could have been called off. On that note I'm wondering which fixtures could be affected. I think the matches at Stoke, West Brom, Wigan and Man City could see some snow, the rest look ok. Could be a few casualties in the Championship too, and some lower league games are already postponed due to frozen pitches.

The Midlands Regional Discussion - Part 2
multi cellular thunderstorm replied to A.J's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Wow what a nice surprise this could be! Showers getting closer to Nottingham now. Could be a few shocked faces in the morning looking out of the window. It's getting really far inland just to the south of Notts, even getting close to Birmingham. -
Thanks Andy! It wasn't by choice that I moved here believe me, but I like it so far. I actually have a better chance of snow this weekend than if I was in Durham so I'm not complaining. I'm also hoping for some much better storms in the summer, that should be one good benefit of living here. Me and my gf are planning a late night walk along the Trent on Saturday night if it snows, I'm pleased she's as mad as me, I can't wait!

The Met Office warnings were working a few mins ago, but not working again! They have a warning for the western and central parts of our region with the eastern edge almost to Notts for Saturday, with 5cm mentioned. Then for the rest of the region further eastwards the warning is for Sunday with 5cm to 10cm predicted. Hopefully it will come back soon but I just thought I would try to describe it because it seems most people can't see it, me included again now. Latest GFS still good, maybe slight improvement in terms of T850 temps. Looking like 6-9 hours of snowfall possible Should get my first snow since moving to Nottingham finally!
