  1. There's nothing to suggest that its expelling large amounts of SO2 and even if it was it may not be enough to have a real affect. Don't get me wrong I'd love it if it belched out >Pinatubo amounts of SO2, I just think we need to be cautious atm. Edit: Just seen your edit, AFAIK the last eruption had no measurable affect. I think VEI6 would be needed to have any affect.
  2. Looks like I've missed all the fun at work! It's a shame it happened at night, webcam shots would have been amazing I'm sure! It seems fairly large and vigorous and obviously more explosions could come. Any ideas on size? I suppose the first stage is to see how much of the mountain is left.
  3. It's all kicking off again with the earthquakes at Redoubt; about 50-60 an hour atm. Could this be the moment we've been waiting for? Webicorder
  4. I don't have it to hand but during the recent heatwave I read that there is a correlation between solar minima and Australian heatwaves, I'm not exactly sure what the reasoning was, I'll try to find it.
  5. It's started raining here too although it appears the temperature is still below freezing.
  6. That prediction looks optimistic to me, my prediction would have the SSN about 30 lower. It's going to be a very interesting year, especially if the sun keeps flatlining.
  7. There may not be any intensification of cold but the odds are more for it than against. I'm expecting to see an abrupt shift in the models to high latitude blocking in the next five days. If this doesn't happen then perhaps something has gone wrong, but at present I think the current patterns and model behaviour are well within the boundries expected.
  8. I'm struggling to think of any outs for a high cycle now, I'd tend to agree with your prediction. With all the attention given to AGW it does worry me that this event with potentially huge consequences is largely being ignored.
  9. Actually I take it all back... it's snowing very lightly. But yes, once this blob on the radar passes through I'm not expecting anything else to develop, I think I'll be lucky to get even a dusting at this rate.
  10. I might have lighter snow, I've seen a total of 8 flakes of snow falling. You might think I'm joking but it's true, 8 snowflakes. Even though the radar has precipitation over my location the forcefield seems to be doing a good job of shielding us.
  11. It's as if the weather is trying its best to rile me at the moment. Firstly there's a nice gap developing in the precipitation for Durham to slip through tonight. And then Monday nights precipitation is upgraded but still finishes just short of me.
  12. Nice photos, it looks as though you got a bit more than me. I was still expecting better from this cold spell, and the fact it was all washed away by the evening meant it was a waste of time. I got up went to work and by the time I came home it was raining and melting, not good enough for me.
  13. I meant significant snow, on Monday I could have defrosted my freezer and made a deeper covering. Tonight is looking weak but some runs have left a lingering area of precipitation in my area. I'm not going to get my hopes up.
  14. Tomorrow nights event looks better for the North East on the 18z. Will we finally see some snow to lower levels?
  15. With regards to Redoubt, has there been any analysis of the activity to perhaps indicate what processes are going on inside the volcano? On a very basic level I've been presuming that the activity has been associated with magma rising to the surface. The longer magma is held near the surface the more gas it release and the gas will build up pressure. So would I be correct in thinking that the longer it rumbles the higher the chance of an explosive eruption becomes?
  16. I agree, unless we see a major turn around I think in years to come I'll have largely forgotten about this winter. The only notable weather in my area has been the run of cold temperatures at the start of the year, and locally I don't even think that was too impressive.
  17. It's been snowing near Peterlee for the last hour or so, just light though.
  18. What do you think our chances are for the end of the week? To me it seems the wind direction is a bit too Northerly for anything substantial.
  19. Rain all the way here, it seems my earlier my assessment was correct. However my uncle who lives in Stanley Crook at 265m asl said he's had 4 inches since he came home from work. I'm very disappointed, I had more snow than this in 2005 which was followed by another tame easterly that also failed to deliver below 200m.
  20. Just seen the forecast too, maybe I'm being too negative.. I guess we'll just have to see what happens.
  21. Yes but I'm expecting that it will be sleet/rain so no further accumulations for me. If I'm proved wrong then fantastic, but I can't see it atm.
  22. Exactly, we had this much in November/December (can't remember) and we've had significantly more at times in the last 5 years, this is not close to being a notable event for the NE.
