  1. EWP table value 161.3 mm, scoring adjusted. 14th wettest Dec, close to wettest if month had been 3 Dec to 2 Jan. Annual 1193.7 mm is just below 6th wettest 1960 (1195.0) and as tables are continually adjusted for several months, too soon to say if 2023 will end up 6th or 7th. Oct to Dec values can all change in next few months and this annual total is not finalized yet. (same applies to Dec but this was last call for contest scoring).
  2. Correct, no data posted for 3rd but they say 8.2 to the 3rd and usually if no update, the date does not update. Odd. But I don't think there is any significant error involved because looking at max and min for 3rd, daily value is probably close to 8 C anyway (around a 10, 6 outcome). Today is a bit cooler and CET report tomorrow if it includes all data will probably be 7.5 to 7.8 to 4th, after which down she goes.
  3. CET update 8.2c to the 2nd 4.4c above the 61 to 90 average (all of Jan) 3.7c above the 81 to 10 average (1-2 Jan) 3.6c above the 91 to 20 average (1-2 Jan) EWP started wet, 17.6 mm on 1st, approx 20 mm more on 2nd, so around 38 now. A dry trend sets in next week, GFS projections suggest EWP will only rise 15-20 mm by 19 Jan, to around 55 mm. Outlook is very cold at times, CET looks set to drop steadily and could be as low as 2 C by 19 Jan (expect 5 C by end of week and an average close to -1 C is depicted for ten days after coming weekend, if we were at 5 C after Sunday and ten days of zero C followed, CET would be 2.2 C by 18 Jan. Remains to be seen if GFS is for real or not.
  4. EWP tracker ends up 160.1 -- will wait for final value 5 Jan before editing error portion of scoring table.

  6. I will edit the table of forecasts after day's end in case there are one or two other late entries, and even so, you can still enter on 2nd or 3rd as well, and those would eventually find their way in.
  7. I just edited the scoring tables posted back around 21st, so EWP scoring is official, CET will be confirmed or adjusted by J 10, these are based on table of entries so if I had any errors in your forecasts there, this table will have those errors. I hope not ... anyway congrats to Typhoon John for hitting this one "out of the park" and also virtualsphere for having both best EWP and best combined. Assume a drop of one rank per late day relative to rank indicated here. ... EWP scores affected by late penalties are shown with ^ symbol. If rank is pushed down, this is indicated by "level" which will also be reflected in error rank (those are not adjusted for late days). Error ranks are also tied for entries in different order. also note: best combined total ranks are shown for all entrants, but are ranked only for top 25. also note: Ranks for normals and consensus are in decimal form, indicating where they are located relative to integer ranks of contest entrants.

  10. By looks of today's reported max and min, CET will stay on 7.0 (I expect today to report around 6.5 to 7.0). EWP was already 140.6 mm before yesterday's downpours and will likely end up near 160 mm. It will be very close to passing 1960 for 6th place (162 mm would be required) in annual precip. All of the above means that the scoring table posted back in thread is quite accurate and can be brought forward tomorrow. EWP errors will require an edit but not points scoring portion. A happy new year to all, don't forget to enter January 2024 contest.
  11. NYC also will have its highest annual average, probably 14.5 C and that is a full 0.4 above previous records of 14.1 in 2012 and 2020. But its highest reading of the year was only 93F (34 C) and only 10% of years had a lower annual max. So it was a bland sort of warmth almost entirely devoid of colder than average spells, and anchored by very mild winter averages at both ends of 2023. January was warmest on record, and this December looks like it will be second warmest (to 2015); February was also in top ten. November did see some below average readings and ended up below 1991-2020 average although near longer-term average. NYC period of record is 1869 to present ... Toronto with 184 years of data will end up near 5th warmest year or t4 possibly ... like NYC they had a very mediocre summer max of 91F or 32.9 C in early September. Both were 3C deg below long-term averages for that statistic (NYC 37 C and Toronto 36 C).
  12. About 7.5 to 7.7, their protocol in calculating annual average is not as simple as just adding twelve values and dividing by 12, it is probably based on an average of mean daily maxima and mean daily minima, but it appears we will fall a bit short although I think there's a chance that 2023 will at least tie 2022 in one decimal (at 11.1 C for CET). They rank years and months based on a second decimal which is not in the tables. 7.6 would give the same total for the twelve months.
  13. Two more CET daily records fell on 25 Dec, mean daily 10.7 breaks 10.4 (1824) in v2.0, it was tied w1983 in CET legacy but 1983 became 10.2 in v2.0. Also minimum of 10.1 broke 9.1 from 1983. The max of 11.3 was not a record. The count for high mean daily records in 2023 is now 10.5 ... now tied with 1947 and 2011 for most daily records. 2022 had 9.5. 1947 also had 5.0 low mean daily records; none of the other years mentioned had any. 1895 is another year with a significant count in both categories (4.0 and 7.0). The years with the highest count of low daily records (v2.0) are 1816 and 1841 both with 9.5. 1812 has 8.5.
  14. EWP is around 111 mm at present and looks to finish 145-150 mm. At 150 mm annual total will be 1183 mm ranking 7th just behind 1960 (1195.0 mm) and well ahead of 1903 (1160.3). As of today the year is passing 9th place 1877 (1144.1) and 8th place 1882 (1146.2). We passed tenth place 1848 (1130.1 mm) a few days ago. So it looks like either 7th or possibly 6th as 5th is a bit out of reach probably (1852_ 1213.0 mm), it would require 180 mm for Dec (or substantial edits of Oct-Nov table values as the EWP values are adjusted several times before settling). Rest of top ten is fourth wettest 2000 (1232.4 mm), third wettest 2012 (1244.4 mm), second 1768 (1247.3 mm) and first 1872 (1283.9 mm). Keep in mind it was very dry in Feb 2023 (16.5 mm). Of the years in current top ten, the driest month any of those had was 12.8 mm in march 1768, followed by 17.1 mm in march 1852, several others had no totals below 30 and 1872 had a low value of only 66.2 (in may). It seems to be common for wet years to do most of their business in second half of year with perhaps one or two wet months before July. This may be because average values are higher for January and the last four months of the calendar year. CET output now looks a bit colder again, and would end up about 6.7 on today's guidance. Looks very windy for night of 30-31 Dec.
  15. New CET records for 24 Dec were set in all three categories: max 13.4 (replaces 12.9 1997) mean 11.3 (replaces 10.7 1843) _ 1843 was before max, min period of record so not sure if it could have set higher max or min 9.3 (replaces 8.9 1977)
  16. Yes, it will get 2023 back into range of tying 2022 for annual CET in one decimal (11.1), we will have to wait and see the decision on that. A colder Dec average was going to make the question of 2nd or 3rd rank against 2014 (11.0) ... This will also be the warmest year on record at NYC (in 155 years), beating 2012, and fifth warmest at Toronto, in 184 years of record. It will also be NYC's lowest calendar year snowfall (1913 3.4", 2023 to date 2.3") if it does not snow at least 1.2" now to 31st. Last winter 2022-23 was also least snowy of all winters at NYC (again 2.3"), but so far this one has only recorded trace amounts. At 7.0 or 7.1C, ((CET)) it would be 15th warmest Dec all-time, and neither of those values exists in v2.0 data set. At 6.9 it would join four others now ranked 15th to 18th. At 6.8 it would join four currently ranked 19th to 22nd.
  17. EWP update _ around 108 mm now, GFS still gets it to 145-150 mm (approx) by end of Dec. CET has been near record mild, not quite setting any daily records so far, but it could do so today (will report on it tomorrow). Looking at model output, if I assume we are at or about 7.0 after both today and 25 Dec, then the last six days will only reduce that to 6.8 or 6.9 (GFS). There was colder guidance in past few days. The European model also looks to flat-line near 7 C with just a slight fall on 30 Dec suggested. Would now say a range of 6.7 to 7.1 looking good (for Typhoon John in particular). Will edit scoring table accordingly.
  18. I just updated v2.0 records on CET historical thread, which took this thread off the page for recent views and posts, so as a courtesy I will get it back to that status with this post. Just in passing, today could break CET daily records, so far in this recent spell, no daily records have been set, going up against highest readings of Dec 2015 then other slightly higher values. ... happy holidays to all.
  19. Tables in this thread were based on CET legacy values. Daily record means (page 1) were edited to show the new v2.0 values, and a log of changes was created. Now I am adding the new v2.0 values for daily max and min records. Notes in existing tables will direct readers to this post for updated values. 20. I am skeptical that reduced human population had anything to do wit the Little Ice Age. Is there any research to document this claim? (I realize there was a reduced population after a century of plague (14th c)). Is it postulated to be related to agricultural practices, otherwise I would be at a loss to imagine any cause and effect in those pre-industrial times (by and large). I would say partly volcanic activity and partly prolonged lower solar activity in two cases, Sporer minimum of 15th century and maunder minimum 1650 to 1710 (also Dalton minimum coincided with another downturn in winter temps). I don't think the LIA really ended until around 1910, that is where larger increases began to develop. Definitely 1890 to 1910 is a better end date, the 1880s were a very cold decade in many regions. It could also be argued that the LIA began as early as 1300; that is about where Norse settlements in Greenland began to experience problems. A good way to visualize climate of LIA would be our recent coldest and also wettest intervals were about normal (average) in those centuries. There were many severe storms in the North Sea and repeated inundations of coastal areas of Frisian Islands etc. The jet stream was probably at least 3 deg of latitude closer to the equator than its recent positions (in n.h. at least). I recall reading in Lamb's studies that coastal ice often extended from east Greenland to Iceland and that polar bears were able to roam around in Iceland as a result. I don't think sea ice has made it more than halfway across the strait in the past hundred years.
  21. I feel pretty confident that EWP will exceed 136mm (our highest forecast) which means that points are more or less set, and errors will all change in lock-step if we blow past my current estimate of 145mm. So here is your first look at EWP contest scoring. Same procedures as previous contest years. It works out in similar ways to CET scoring. There are scoring levels from 0.0 to 10.0 (instead of 0 to 100 as in CET). Instead of adding bonus points, I subtract penalty points for the same aspects, for example, you lose 0.06 for being wrong side of 1991-2020 normal (with a graduated scale for first six closest to normal penalized). You lose .01 for every 10% you exceed best forecast in percentage error (it's like the accuracy points in CET). You lose 0.3 for each late day. One thing I do a bit differently is to deduct only a half a scoring level for later duplicates; this is partly because there are fewer duplicates, and also, if two forecasts tie for errors on different sides of the target, they are scored equally (unless one gets wrong-sign penalty or is late). Order of entry still plays a role in EWP. I think it is just about the same scoring system as CET overall. The table contains CET predictions so I can easily convert this into a "best combined" and CET ranking early indication as usual, but official CET scoring is announced by J10 later. I am not as confident of CET being closer to 7.0 than 6.3 but I believe it will be between our two highest forecasts so I did the best combined rank setting based on 6.9 -- Typhoon John does not enter EWP anyway so it won't affect best combined results at all if the 1-2 finish indicated for CET is reversed. It would affect it a little if outcome is below 6.2 C. (edit 24 Dec, below 6.5 looks less likely now) Results for DEC 2023 _ Subject to any later adjustments _ based on 7.0 C and 162 mm Ranks _____ CET _ EWP __ FORECASTER (Order of entry) ___ Best 22. Japan recently went from very mild record breaking temps (in mid 20s even outside subtropical southern areas), to very cold with snow. So pattern change can still occur in the northern hemisphere. Looks quite cold to end Dec so CET probably will fall back from a peak near 7 C by 25th, into the mid 6 range. It is also quite mild at my location, 4 C and rain, normally snowing a fair bit and -2 to -5 C temps but not like that so far, will end up with about same anomaly in +2C range.
  23. EWP around 102 mm now, will add about 40-45 mm over rest of December to end around 142-147 mm. That is higher than all forecasts so I can score the contest any time. Will wait until around 27 Dec however. CET will keep rising steadily to 24 Dec, at a near-record rate, so could be close to 6.8 C by 25 Dec, average for 26-31 Dec looks near normal and if it were to be 5.0 for six days, 6.8 would only deflate a bit, to 6.5 C. Only Typhoon John at 7.0 C is above that projection, with davehsug at 6.3 next warmest. Top ten on this forecast (eleven after ties) is rounded out by Summer Sun (5.9), PIT (5.8), Reef (5.8), I Remember Atlantic 252 (5.7) and summer blizzard (5.6), noname_weather (5.6). Best combined effort appears to be virtualsphere (6.0, 136.0) who looks likely to finish either 2nd or 3rd CET and probably first EWP, but could also be first CET if that ends up 6.1 or 6.0. ... virtualsphere was in early with that one, ahead of syed2878 and froze were the days also at 6.0. That rounds out the likely top five CET, so top six EWP after virtualsphere would be Frigid (135.0), Don (130.0), noname_weather (129.0) and at 124.0 for 5th, 6th (ProlongedSnowLover and Godber1). Snowray, J10, Feb1991blizzard, and cheeky monkey round out top ten. (assuming we do see at least 25-30 mm of projected 40-45, if it turned out lower this would require an edit).
  24. 4.6 would seem mild before about 1990. I am encouraged by trends on later panels of GFS, probably a false hope if ever there was one, but I don't think GFS ever falsely shows mild anyway, so for it to turn cold, there at least needs to be a signal for cold. Verification of these is likely about 30-40 per cent over past few winters. And it's not blockbuster cold being shown. We need that enormous mid-Atlantic high to get sucked up into Greenland, or at least retrograde past 30W, to get a long-wave trough into a better position, for past two weeks it has been in eastern Europe. There seems to be a healthy supply of cold air in western Russia and Siberia, but at present a lot of it is leaking south into China. I read elsewhere Japan recently flipped from record warm to below normal, about 3-4 days back it was record warm all over Japan, now it's snowing and quite cold. Going to place an early forecast of 3.7 and 56.3 mm, if I see a different outcome I will scrap it around 31st. At this point I foresee a series of colder regimes with occasional reversals to mild, but on balance, turning colder second half, not particularly wet by recent January standards. A typical 19th century January you could say. (later edit, will stick to these early calls although I see a milder look to some recent runs)
