I'm glad to be home, especially when the forecast looks like this. Below freezing but extremely pleasant:

    Welcome back!

It is starting to feel like winter now. Daytime highs due to be around minus 5 to minus 10 and nighttime lows might get down to minus 20 in Canmore.

Plenty of sun around mixed with snow showers in the next few days.

One thing to note, we're seeing repeated suggestion of the SPV being shunted over to the Siberian side. From a complete amateur's view I'd suggest that this may mean a milder Canadian/N American winter with deeper cold this side of the hemisphere going forward.

One of the main players has just released their winter forecast for Canada. Looks like warmer than average for the eastern half , colder for the west....

I was just reading this and then saw your message - extreme cold is never fun. It’s a bit similar to last years forecast with increased snowfall but from an active jet stream running through. But this time they seem to be expecting more upsloping snow, as they mentioned, coming from easterly winds.  You may end up with all cold and no snow again

was real sheet day in Edmonton yesterday..took me over 2 hours to get to the airport to fly to Vancouver (normally its 20 mins)..did not see one snow plough or gritter on any roads..at this point it had been snowing for nearly 24hrs.

Yeah I bet it was. Not sure about you but I tend to find the ploughing is worse with bad storms early in the season. Whether it’s a budget thing who knows.

  5. As expected, a bit of a damp squid so far. Nothing but wet in town though some snow starting to settle on roofs etc.

Even in Kananaskis there’s only a little on the ground. Though the ski hill is doing well.

It was just too wet IMO for any real accumulation. Though the warning has now changed to say that it’ll turn over to proper snow by late morning down to low levels and it is forecast for all day today and night, so we’ll see what happens...

Those who think that our current long fetch SW pattern means that our chances of winter cold are over only need to look at what happened during November 2010

Yup - look at Jan 1987. One of the coldest spells of the 20th century (down to minus 23oC) and snowiest (for the SE up to 70cm in places).

Christmas ‘86 was super mild and within a few weeks that happened. It often seems it’s a precursor to some of the coldest weather.

Looking at the extended weather forecast on BBC there is no sign of any frost or ice which is absolutely splendid in my book. A mild winter is definitely in my book.

I might be wrong but I think if you’re after a mild winter you might be disappointed this year...especially early doors. Call it a hunch

  8. To ‘relive’ , mine would have to be Jan 1987. Living on the north downs of Kent we had 70cm’s and it dumped snow for days. Never seen anything like it in the UK since, and living in a Canada I’ve only seen similar once. But there’s something much more magical about it occurring in England as a child.

I’d loved to have experienced the winter of 62/63.

every winter month is a sub zero month here ..it aint all that TBH

I think it was winter 17/18 where there were about 170 days in a row below freezing for you guys. That’s not fun even for the hardiest winter lover.

EDIT: it was 167 days from October to April

A Canadian city – a provincial capitol, no less – has officially broken its own record for most consecutive days where the temperature has dipped to or below freezing, with 167 days...

im hoping for winter just like the one just gone..very dry ..in fact the only major snowstorm happened the first week in November 2020..did not see any snow at all until the end of Jan 2021 after that was just a couple of dustings before spring arrived.

I think the jet stream took all the storms south of edmonton through southern Alberta.

be careful what you wish for..i think this winter could be a long cold snowy one

True but it can’t be worse than some years. I think ‘08 it’s snowed every month of the year with 10cm’s in August. That was a depressing year. I’m happy with a snowy winter if the following summer is good.
