  2. Christmas 2010: Snow risk above average Forecast headline Our sixth Christmas 2010 forecast update suggests a slightly increased chance of snow falling on Christmas day across Britain. Chances overall are now higher than average. At the moment we think the most likely outcome is for rather cold and unsettled spell of weather during the Christmas holiday, with an increasing risk of sleet or snow further north and over higher ground. Probabilities of snow falling on Christmas Day North of Yorkshire / Lancashire: 25% - 35% (risk increases to 30% further north) South of Yorkshire / Lancashire: 15% - 25% (risk increases to 25% further east) Forecast issued Update 1, 01/09/2010 Update 2, 06/09/2010 Update 3, 20/09/2010 Update 4, 03/10/2010 Update 5, 24/10/2010 Update 6, 07/11/2010 http://www.theweatheroutlook.com/twoforecasts/Christmas%202010%20weather%20forecast.aspx
  3. UK Outlook for Tuesday 23 Nov 2010 to Tuesday 7 Dec 2010: The trend is for generally brighter, more settled weather to spread across the UK during this period at the end of November and the start of December. Although rainfall may be somewhat above average in central and southern parts at first, it is likely to become near or below average everywhere during the first week of the period. With clear skies and winds perhaps lighter than normal, it looks as though temperatures will be often below average. There is also likely to be less sunshine than usual for many parts of the UK later in the period, the best of the brighter weather in northern areas. 4. UK Outlook for Saturday 13 Nov 2010 to Monday 22 Nov 2010: Remaining predominantly unsettled and windy with showers or longer spells of rain, which are expected to be heavy at times. For Saturday and Sunday, some persistent, occasionally heavy rain is expected across southern UK and parts of the west and northwest, with some eastern and northeastern parts tending to be drier. Some wintry showers over northern hills at times too. Thereafter, staying largely unsettled, with the east and northeast likely to see the best weather. It will be generally windy throughout. Temperatures start near or just below normal, especially in the north where overnight frosts are likely, and then recover to nearer normal, with some milder interludes in the south. Later in the period there is a trend towards drier, brighter but possibly colder conditions with an increasing frost risk. 5. Summary A stormy start but a settled end It looks more like October for the next week or two: Deep depressions with strong winds and much rain. The expected anticyclonic, cold, fog and damp of November is more likely just before the month is out. Monday 8 November 2010 to Sunday 14 November 2010 Stormy large depressions Hill snow - several centimetres in the Grampian Mountains. Severe gales - 70+mph gusts in the Western Isles. Heavy rain - 30mm in Cumbria. These are conditions more reminiscent of the end of the hurricane season when we get obviously violent conditions. Apart from ex-hurricane Tomas, whose various parts might be included in the end of the week's low, there is no tropical air in these babies. There is also a visit to the cold easterlies on Tuesday as a precursor to what in January or February would be the coldest of weather. Even now it's raw. Monday 15 November 2010 to Sunday 21 November 2010 Less stormy, less large depressions You'll still hear he word "unsettled" in the broadcasts and it'll be more often windy than still and frosty. There is an indication of further snow on northern hills and conversely warming weather in southern Britain. This might be explained by smaller depressions running across the north of the UK whilst dragging a southwesterly airflow across the south. The week will probably end with the thought of frost and fog. Monday 22 November 2010 to Sunday 5 December 2010 Colder and clearer Early rain in the south is indicated, then the weather dries up. This time it's probably a spell of high pressure building in cold air. This is pointed to by the trend in computer models to below average temperatures, thus night frosts and below average rainfall from the end of week 3. During week 4, below average sunshine is suggested in southern UK. This is a possible indication of anticyclonic gloom again. Most likely cloud from the North Sea trapped under the high pressure dome. Typical of November but this is now December! Next week So far the year has not followed the average - why should December? http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/10209

  7. UK Outlook for Friday 12 Nov 2010 to Sunday 21 Nov 2010: Remaining predominantly unsettled and windy with showers or longer spells of rain, which are expected to be heavy at times. For Friday and Saturday, the heaviest rain is expected in western and north-western parts of the UK, with some eastern and northeastern parts remaining generally dry. Some of this precipitation may turn to snow over northern hills. Thereafter, staying unsettled, with any drier weather most likely in the south and east. It will be generally windy throughout, especially when low pressure systems pass close to the UK. Temperatures start near or just below normal, especially in the north where overnight frosts are likely, and then recover to nearer normal, with some milder interludes in the south. 8. 40% Chance of a white Christmas White Christmas Forecast Issued: 2010-11-06 23:23:00 Next Forecast: 2010-11-10 22:00:00 Synopsis This update brings a slightly higher risk of snow for the big day across the United Kingdom. Longer range charts continue throw a mix of milder and colder options so certainly nothing specific is being suggested right now. However there currently seems a good confidence that cold enough air will be present across the North at least or not too far which may allow for some wintry conditions, especially on high ground. Inland areas are likely to be the driest with sunny spells possible. Coastal areas more prone to showers and longer periods of precipitation. A cool or even cold day seems likely. The chance of any very mild weather at the moment seems very unlikely. http://www.ukasf.co....dule-christmas/
