Some top notch thunderstorming over the last hour or so here. One strike in particular gave a hefty clap of thunder. Just so happened to be filming at the time. Have a look. 20240502_033447.mp4 -

Hearing some thunder now from a cell down towards Alton. -

I can see some very faint elevated lightning from here in Basingstoke. Can't hear any thunder as expected given it's from the cell near Portsmouth, but it feels much closer than that. -

Had a small thunderstorm come through about 2.30am, couple of flashes and a bit of thunder, but nothing of any note. Interested to see how the line of storms that's recently lit up in the channel fairs as it moves up toward me. -

A few screenshots and a bit of video last night as the remnants of the MCS passed by to the North East of my current location in Flintshire. Fairly distant but it threw out one or two decent flashes. -

Managed to see some lightning and hear some distant thunder from the cell over the Dee Estuary heading into the Irish Sea. Some decent lightning too. Looks like electrical activity has ceased now though. -

Sitting here just outside Afonwen in Flintshire awaiting the remnants of the storm over Cheshire. Might get a few flashes and rumbles. Back to Basingstoke tomorrow, hoping for more storms during the journey back. -

Morning all. Luckily, I'm visiting family in NE Wales at the moment, and managed to bag a couple of storms that passed through around 6pm. No photos unfortunately, but a quick summary of events, nothing too exciting, but good for the record (mods, if you want to move this to a more appropriate thread - crack on!): As expected, the day was very hot and muggy, and noticeably hazy. We spent most of the afternoon in the Dee Valley on the Llangollen Railway, so in a fairly good position to see a substantial cumulus develop to the east and south east from mid afternoon. The development of which had become incredibly rapid by 5pm. Even the non-weather types with me commented on how fast the clouds were bubbling up, and it was indeed exceptionally fast convection, but rather difficult to appreciate without sunglasses owing to the hazy skies. To the SSE at the time were cirrus anvils of cells over towards Shrewsbury and Birmingham were making themselves visible over the tops of the hills at this time too. This explosive convection coincided with our return back to Broughton in Flintshire - temperatures at the nearby Hawarden Airport reaching 29c during the afternoon - where we found ourselves catching up with the lines of thunderstorms that had broken out from the cumulus line and explosive convection seen to the east about 30 mins earlier. Some fairly substantial rain and thunder. Couldn't see too much lightning, but did catch one or two positive CG's on the drive back. Once this cluster of storms had passed through Broughton and carried on NW toward Liverpool, another pair of cells came in about half an hour later from the Crewe/Nantwich direction, noticeable by the substantial outflow preceding the arrival of the cell. The wind had become very squally. Some interesting structure on the underside of the leading edge. Gust front maybe? On radar this showed a lot of promise but I think the preceding storm had sapped some of the energy out of the atmosphere, as this later storm was something of a damp squib. It weakened considerably as it passed overhead with only marginal lightning and thunder, and moderate rain. Post storm the wind died back to almost zero, making for a very humid and close evening. Further moderate rain continued during the evening, but generally the main event was over by 7.30pm - 8.30pm. All in all, managing to surreptitiously throw in a short chase in the midst of a family day out (taking the scenic route back from Llangollen over the Llandegla moors...'lovely scenery up there, let's go for a detour' says I, fooling everyone else in the car), quite happy with the storms we saw. More due today. Over on the Cheshire plain this afternoon, hopefully may even get chance for photos today too. -

I think I generalised a bit by saying Lowestoft. Being more specific, the cell in question would have been to the south of you in the Southwold/Halesworth area. I've attached a screenshot from the 2130 radar return which shows the cell at it's strongest. Looking at the radar in conjunction with lightningmaps, it seemed to be electrically active for about 20 mins or so before dying as it moved further inland. -

Looks to be a thunderstorm in the Lowestoft/Southwold area of Suffolk at the moment. That'll make for a fun evening at this year's Latitude festival. -

Heard a faint rumble a few minutes ago from the cell between Alton and Farnham, looks to be fairly decent if it sustains, though I think it will skim south of me by a few miles. -

Morning all. Woken about 40 minutes ago by distant rumblings. Since then had some closer growls and a couple of IC flickers but wasn't able to ascertain direction. No thunder for at least 15 minutes, but has in the last few seconds begun to rain moderately/heavily. I think the best bet for here is later on today. Has anyone else's radar output stopped at 05:05? -

Pretty much pinning my hopes on the western edge perking up later on this evening. Raining here at the moment, and as refreshing as it is, it's not exactly exciting. -

Some decent cracks of thunder here at the moment, really picking up just west of town. -

Yes, I saw two flashes and heard rumbles from it, but it seems to have gone quiet. Not seeing much up towards Reading now as well. -

I can see the edge of the cell south of Basingstoke silhoutted against the sky. I'm surprised by how fast the clouds are moving tonight. Noticeable drop in temperature recently and a light breeze has sprung up a bit. Lightning appears to have decreased in frequency too. -

Something's building closer to home. Had some lightning I think to the south or south east, couldn't tell, and some thunder just after, was about 5 to 6 miles away. -

I think so, maybe reflection as there's a lot of haze here at the moment. I'm on the very eastern edge of Baso so fairly uninterrupted by light pollution. -

Lots of lightning visible from Basingstoke coming from the Reading cell. Hearing very faint rumbles now. Can also see (I think) flashes directly off to the east, not sure of that though, but these flashes are very bright. -

Let's hope the forecast model is incorrect and the storms end up on the correct side of Hampshire. -

I think that storm south of Alton was the one I could hear rumbling away earlier on around 2pm. Pleasant surprise this afternoon to get all that constant rumbling, and a decent splash of rain too - even if the core of the cell was a little to the south. -

It took me by surprise by how quickly it formed. We had a small thunderstorm pass by around 2pm, then around 3.30pm heard what I thought was wagons being unloaded at the unit next door to where I worked. Popped out for a look and saw a lovely black wall of cloud to the east and south east booming away. Still going now, hoping for a more direct hit later on. -

Just back in from work. Had continuous thunder from a storm that skimmed us to the south. Some decent rainfall out of it and a couple of visible flashes of lightning. Still rumbling as it moves away to the west.
