  1. It's not deliberate SM, don't panic! No-one would want to miss you out! When you put these charts together it's really quite fiddly and despite constant checking, easy to miss one or two or make the odd mistake! It'll be rectified soon. Regards, Moose
  2. Thanks for the charts JackOne - great stuff. Well done to those flying up the table putting the rest of us to shame! Must try harder. Moose
  3. Interesting question, John and clearly an upward trend there for all to see. Also, as SF has observed, not only warmer but drier and sunnier in summer and warmer of course in the winter. Strangely, it seems that the sunshine records keep being broken too, even in the winter months. But thinking about it, with increasing pressure overall, that makes sense too. I remember 10 years or so ago the computer models were suggesting that Britain would have a Mediterranean climate in, I think it was 60 or 70 years' time. Well the means 50 or 60 years now but it looks as though the trend is moving much morfe quickly than that. Climate is the trend for weather over a number of years and there is probably no definitive time scale for this but clearly things are happening much fsater than was predicted. Could we then have a 'true' Mediterranean climate in as little as, what 10 years? Five? Three?? That brings us back to your original question -why? I think you and several other posters have hit the proverbial nail. One reason the computer models have been caught out and predicted climate change 60 or 70 years hence is because they were only fed with global warming style data. Actually, as we have seen, changes to the movement of pressure belts has caused us to receive much more of our weather from warmer quarters for prolonged periods of time. The Euro high blocking has prevented the Atlantic lows from heading our way in the way that we were used to, reducing rainfall significantly. More high pressure means more sunshine, generally. Put all of these factors together and we have what we are now experiencing rapidly increasing warmth, increased sunshine and drastic changes to rainfall patterns. What is alarming is that these (unforeseen pressure pattern changes) have affected our climate in a much more rapid timescale than the much-feared global warming has so far done. Put the two together and..... Regards, Moose

  5. Been away for a while...hmm, things don't change much. No rain, soaring temperatures, high pressure all over the charts. All rather depressing! Any chance of a return to something approaching normality? Doesn't really look much like it. Therefore, 14 degrees for me please for May CET. thanks very much. Moose

Not how I like my Aprils to be. I guess we fall very much into two camps now - those of us who would prefer not to see increasing warmth, drought and rapidly increasing CETs each month and actually like some days when it's wet and cold and those of us who want to BBQ every weekend of the year. No doubt which camp are happy this month and I suspect will wear their BBQs out before the year's over. I'm off to bemoan the fact that the grass at the golf club just isn't growing due to the lack of rain. Enjoy your BBQs this weekend and remember to cook the sausages all the way through. 13. An interesting month in the christmas pudding, April. In the last 10 years we have had very cold and ver warm. Most months just give us warm or very warm! Can't see it being cold overall and think the possible cool start will be more than compenated for by a warm second half of the month. I'll go for 8.6 please. Moose
  14. 2000 was quite a lot colder and wetter as I seem to remember. In recent years (the last decade) April has been the only month (I think) that has been a fair bit below the average on more than two occasions. I'm sure Mr Data will correct me if I'm wrong. That said, there have also been several warm Aprils too so not much of a pattern really. As far as the weather for Easter goes, because the actual easter period can vary by almost a month, there is scope for a remarkable variation in temperature from lying snow and freezing nights to basking on the beach. What will it be this year? Easter is fairly early but not as early as it could be. Some indications of a cool spell but it's still up in the air really (excuse the pun). Next week end we should have more idea. Moose
  15. SF thanks very much for doing all the donkey work to produce these rather splendid spreadsheets. It really is very much appreciated - perhaps we should show our appreciation by putting some money on your tab at your local hostelry? Got to be worth a pint from everyone at least! Thanks also to the rest of you guys who have posted the charts to keep us up to date. Great idea this - helps to alleviate the disappointment of our progressively uninspiring weather!! Moose
  16. Well what does March offer? This last few months have been so exceptional - even given our recent warmimg trend - looking at even the last 10 years for some sort of pointer may not help. I can't now see any real change in pressure patterns - with south westerly winds likely to dominate. I was tempted to go for something a little cooler on the grounds that March can be very unpredictable and produce a few cold northerly winds, even the odd easterly with a fair bit of snow following mild winters (1975 springs to mind), but I guess those days have gone. I'm therefore (sadly) going to plump for 7.9 please. Thanks. Moose
  17. March has seen many cold incursions in the past. But, sadly, that seems a long time ago. Even so,some very interesting data provided by Mr Data earlier in this thread has tempted me to buck the trend and opt for a coolish March. Not sure - will come in with a punt tomorrow after I've consulted the pine cones wrapped in seaweed. Moose
  18. Nope - you're quite right. When I left the UK for France a week last Friday, the CET was a fair way below average, there was 6 inches of snow on the ground, snow was falling and the temperature was hovering around zero degrees. Kids were out sledging and snowballing because all the schools were closed and cars were grinding to a halt trying to climb the smallest of inclines. What a difference a week makes as I arrive back to balmy, semi-tropical conditions that the warm weather lovers amongst us could only have dreamed about. Astonishing turn around leading to a rocketing CET that looks like it will approach, if not exceed, 7 degrees now. I would not have believed that would be possible after the first 10 days of February. And I thought it was warm in the French Alps...Frightening. Moose

  20. My apologies, GP - I will attend to it! Moose
  21. I must agree - the Scandi high is essential if this is to come to anything. Without it, the lows will march straight through with little resistance and milder air will undercut the colder air very quickly resulting in rain and higher temps. Sadly, this look quite likely now to my untrained eye. Best prognosis is for lows to move further south and leave the UK in colder air but without the block...hope I'm wrong. Moose

  24. In answer to point 1) The earth has had many warmer phases in the past, it's true. The difference this time it would seem is the comparitive speed of change (very rapid in climate terms) which suggests either man made interference, or excessive natural warming or both. Possibly both. Point 2) is much easier to answer. Our Government don't give a rat's ass what anybody else does but by being first in the chair they can claim i) a moral victory over those 'damn foreigners' who don't care about the environment; ii)they can ease their consciences by pretending to do some good to counteract some of the dreadful things that they have done (fat chance); iii) and most importantly, they can add hundreds millions of pounds to the coffers (to spend on, let's say. the odd ('illegal') war, a few peerages and general Government shananigins that cost a lot of money and aren't we grateful to be governed by such noble, honest and truthful people) by charging us to use our cars to drive to work, fly Ryanair and heat our houses when the temperature drops below 10 degrees C because we obviously shouldn't be doing any of these things. Then by calling it a carbon tax and singing Rule Britannia or God Save the Bloody Queen, we can show the world that the Empire lives on, we care about the world and sod Johhny Foreigner. In short, they are trying to persuade us that it might not do any good because global warming is here to stay, but hey, let's show the world that we care even if they don't. Rant over - promise to book in to see my psychiatrist first thing Monday morning after I've planted a few trees to counteract having the heating on this weekend - only because my daughter's ill and said she felt cold. Honest, Moose
  25. Who dare climb the highest? Good question. Let's see; winter is turning out to be one of the mildest on record (until next winter that is...); I think spring will be warm and summer; similarly for autumn and the start of winter. So that leaves me with no alternative but to plump for a well over the odds 11.79 degrees C. I have absloutely no idea what the warmest year on record is, but 2007 may well smash it. Moose
