Well, that was a nice summer. The radiators kicked in around 6pm and earlier Autumnal dog walk was dark, wet and very chilly. Max temperature today of 16C at 00.05. Currently 11C. Humidity 93%. Wind NW 4mph, average over 10 mins 3.8mph and over 2 mins 3.1mph. Pressure 1013.7hPa rising slowly. 49.4mm of rain has fallen since midnight with a max rain rate of 42.0 at 13:31. Had to go to a meeting in Bedford this afternoon with atrocious driving conditions triggering a constant rendition of Jesus, Mary and the Winter Tyres and several pacts with God if I got there and back in one piece. Visibility scarily poor, lots of flooding, tree debris on roads presumably from the intensity of rain as it wasn't windy, cars swerving to avoid floods. Took over 50 minutes to get through a stretch of the journey that takes max of 15 minutes at rush hour. Had to pull over for 2 ambulances blue lighting out of Bedford, police cars plus a couple of fire engines so I hope there weren't any serious accidents and/or injuries. I saw one incident after someone tried to avoid a section of flooded road and slid into another car but that wasn't more than car damage and everyone looked ok, if not particularly happy. Very glad to have made it back home with the car and me in one piece and that I've been too busy to get the winters changed to summer tyres

Beautiful day earlier, max of 28C at 16:36 began getting cloudy and uncomfortably humid from around 7pm. Currently 24C with 72% humidity, although feels hotter and more humid. House is unbearable. Have been fastening new plants to canes in the hope they will survive any torrential rain. Sky increasingly dark and stormy on quick dog walk. Wind from south at 1mph. Average over 10 mins 0.5mph. Pressure 1009.3 steady. Raining steadily for last 15 minutes although weather station not recording that - wonder if something's wrong with it...

Not quite as hot as yesterday, due to increasing cloud. High of 26C at 14:06. Currently 18C but with 70% humidity (following max of 80% at 04:20), it feels uncomfortable and hotter than 18. Wind 0mph from N with 10 min average of 0.5 mph; 2 minute average of 0.3mph. Pressure 1021.5hPa rising slowly.

Weather station recorded a high of 27C at 17:57, at that time wind speed of 0mph. Very uncomfortable 24C at 8pm and dog walk wasn’t very enjoyable. Particularly as the darling boy found some fox spoor to roll in He’s been showered with ‘guaranteed to get rid of unpleasant odour’ fox spoor shampoo, the perfume of which is marginally less revolting that the stinky fox spoor itself. Important word here is marginally.... Harness and collar washed, ditto towels and have just had prayers answered with a wee breeze while hanging them on the line. House is unbearably hot so sitting in the garden with a cup of tea with a more pleasant temperature of 22C, wind ENE 2 mph. 10 minute average 1.6 mph; 2 min average 1.5mph. Humidity currently 72% from today’s max of 99% at 04:59. Pressure 1022.7hPa falling slowly. Because the house was clearly designed by a sadistic beast of an architect, with all bedrooms facing West and therefore impossible to sleep in on days like this, think I’ll stay outside for a while yet, watching the hedgehogs noisily drinking water and eating cat food.

On this first day of summer, my weather station recorded a high of 25C at 14:24. Current temp is 22C. Humidity a wonderfully comfortable 49% Wind ENE 3mph. Pressure 1013.5hPA steady If only the rest of June would replicate these perfect (for me anyway) conditions......

Hot, sunny and with a welcome refreshing breeze. Top temperature of 23C at 13:46, still 22C at 18:35 (at last check of weather station). Wind reduced to 3mph. 1018hPa, falling slowly. A nice evening for walking the dog.

After a disappointingly cloudy and cool start to the day, sun appeared around 11:30 and remained all day. High of 22C at 15:19. Have been gardening, had supper outside, taken my dear dog for a short 1.5 mile wee wee and jobbie walk across the fields. Sitting in the garden with glass of red wine - perfect 17C, wind 2mph. Pressure 1027hPa, rising slowly. No rain in last 24 hours. Jolly good thing too, after 76.4mm this month. A perfect end to a lovely day.

Very light snow started 11am. Dog walk pic/video on outskirts of village midday, back garden starting to look wintery 12:40. Not a lot of snow, although it’s the first this year here and something to send my poor sister struggling with 43C where she lives in Australia. What isn’t evident from garden video is the resident squirrel racing up and down one of the trees looking as though it’s doing a joyful snow dance, although the poor thing might well be trying the equivalent of a panic buy at the first hint of snow. 2020 just keeps on giving. In the usually benign East of England, more than 1,300 households in Bedfordshire told to evacuate yesterday with evacuation/rest centres set up in Bromham and Bedford to add to the misery of an already difficult Christmas. Severe flooding in parts of neighbouring Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Norfolk. In the meantime my weather station notes temp has increased from 1C at 00:36 to 9C and tells me in full capitals BAR FALLING RAPIDLY, as if my ears weren’t able to work that one out (anyone else get horrible earache when this happens?) In 12 last hours pressure has dropped from 1024.5 to 1011.8 with majority of that fall from 10am. My own village has had today’s earlier flood warning reduced but those living very near the River Ivel, flowing (rushing) through our village remain on careful watch as it’s highest it’s been for several years apparently, and the sand bags already in place at the formerly ‘desirable homes’ that back onto the river aren’t going anywhere soon. 7 hours of heavy rain forecast from around 23:00 across those already flooded, although started with fine pish drizzle as I type. And all this stress for so many across the country even before the wind arrives...

Torrential rain timed to perfection to ruin 06:40 dog walk cleared to give a sunny/cloudy day. Increasing wind throughout morning with weather station recording max of 48mph at 16:30, which surprised me as looked and felt stronger. Watched with mix of awe and trepidation at how my trees have thrashed around in full leaf all afternoon and evening. Gusts currently no higher than 44 but now in bed and it sounds wilder, possibly because gusts are more frequent? Lots of small/medium branches strewn across garden, couple of larger ones down. Vegetable garden has taken a battering and will need unplanned surgery tomorrow, to repair fractures to runner bean supports. Will also need to find the vegetable protective shredded netting that’s gone walkabout. As for the new, large herbaceous border I’ve lovingly nurtured this summer - intensive care/reconstructive surgery required methinks. Still, luckier than some poor folk with flooded homes and trees down.

Having been a N-W member since 2005 and someone who rarely reveals personal information, I have to admit that since I became very ill with the Covid virus in early April I’ve experienced recurrent periods of exhaustion and struggled with concentration, or even being able to form coherent sentences and certainly struggled to recall things that I’d previously taken for granted. Yet today reading your experience of autumn and asking what triggered this beautiful season for others, it opened up for me the first coherent and crystal clear sense, for a very long time, of what my favourite season has always meant to me - so thank you for triggering that. Apologies Mods, off thread but no disrespect intended. Can report a maximum rain rate during this afternoon’s intense storm of 98.4 at 15:08 contributing to a total of 25.8mm today.

Big thunderstorm here. Still ongoing with definitely no garden watering required today I notice the torrential rain has created a sense of humour in my normally sensible weather station.

The crispness of the air, scents redolent of blackberries, mushrooms, bonfires. Walking through woods blazing with reds, oranges, yellows, kicking through the fallen rustling leaves. Watching the late afternoon mist forming in lower hollows and creeping up through the fields, until the horses visible only from their chests up become mythical fairytale creatures. Stars bright in the clear skies and finally, indoors to sit before the wood burner with my dog, dreaming into the flames.

Day 4 of 30C plus heat. Monday 10 August, Max 34.6 @ 15:14. Day 5: 11 August, started the day with 91% humidity at 07:30 followed by max temp of 33C @ 15:14, and again at 18:30. Currently 27C, Wind 1mph, humidity 62% Somehow it feels worse than last night but maybe that’s the sleep deprivation altering reality... Lightening reflecting clouds due west an hour ago, guessing a long way away. West in straight line from village not a lot until north Milton Keynes 30-32 miles away. Timing fits with radar activity around MK.

My Davis weather station has logged Friday 35.5 (down on previous Friday’s 36.4C), Saturday 33.5, today 32.0 at 15.14. Currently 21 and 89% humidity, with today’s life saving wind diminished to...0mph. It’s going to be more difficult to sleep than last night that’s for sure. I consider myself lucky living in a village with open space at bottom of my long garden, even in a sadistic architect designed house with all bedrooms facing west. Feeling for those in urban areas tonight. Met Office forecasting 33 for tomo, Tues and Wednesday here. Wonder if I’ll get 6 consecutive days of plus 30C?
