  7. Dry, sunny and exceptionally hot, has clouded over in the past hour but no rain has hit the ground here from the band of showers showing on the radar. The wind got up for a while early afternoon reminding me of the blowtorch conditions I once experienced in the Australian outback, where there was a gusty dry wind and the temperature was 41C. The nearest official station at the university reached 37.7 early afternoon, well up on its previous record of 36.4 from August 2003. The maximum here on our shaded thermometer in the garden was 38.0, last night's minimum 20.6. Wind light SE.
  8. In a completely unrelated Facebook post I randomly guessed that today's absolute maximum would be 40.4 at Coningsby. Going to be close
  9. I've only experienced this once before, and that was in the Australian outback in summer many years ago. I remember arriving at Tennant Creek, in the Northern Territory, around 5pm, where it was 41 degrees with a 'fresh' breeze off the desert. It really did feel like standing in front of a hairdryer.
  10. Dry and sunny for most of the day, becoming very hot by lunchtime. Some high cloud caused the temperature to level off, with the peak around 1pm, so no records broken here. Maximum 35.4, minimum 15.1. Wind light S.
  11. Hawarden has apparently reached 37.1, a big jump for the Welsh record. Back on topic: for tomorrow, as the models stand right now the range for the absolute maximum looks like 38 (ECM, from Yorkshire down to the Wash) to 42 (UKV, South Yorkshire area and GFS, Lincolnshire).
  12. We're in a good old solid Victorian terrace - can be a bit chilly in the winter but generally comfortable in hot weather. I think all that heat goes up the chimneys.
