  1. Spot on Norrance... Dundee is 8-10 miles inland and normally fares well in breakdown scenarios where temps are more marginal at the coast )Aberdeen doesn't do as well as Dundee does in breakdowns) Nor does Aberdeen do better than Dundee in an Easterly, just ask Zerouali_Lives who lives in Aberdeen. Northerlies bring dry and cold weather to Dundee and brings snow to Aberdeen. I actually have to laugh at this comment SF- " Quite why Dundee, notoriously snowless, should be the second most popular punt I do not know" It's notoriously snowless to yourself and no one else, because I can assure you it's not the case. It's ok to sit back and talk about what you think you know, hundreds of miles away and to talk about St. Andrews bay which doesn't really have anything to do with Dundee. St Andrews gets a lot less snow than Dundee, and that is a fact. It is milder there in general. Dundee is not on the coast.. it's 8-10 miles inland as mentioned earlier. Places further East like Broughty Ferry and Carnoustie get less snow than here. The highest point in the City of Dundee is 174 M above sea level. It all makes a difference. We live here SF, you don't. Perhaps you could take what we're saying on board. OH BTW- this winter has been crap so far, perhaps the worst for 10 years for here.
  2. Looks nice there Sam. How many cms there with you?
  3. We have a light covering here with showers coming in off the North Sea since 4pm. We've had a mixture of pellets and snow. There was a light covering last night too and although it all melted in the city centre, up where I live there has still been patches that have stayed all day with a fresh fall now on top of it. Temp 2c with dew point 1c.
  4. I think that people who are "too far North" for tomorrows event should start paying closer attention to the model output for friday into sunday, as there could well be some fun and games for Northern England and Scotland this weekend should the GFS become a little less progressive with its Atlantic Low for tomorrows event. The UKMO looks promising for snow for Northerners after friday so take heart from that for now.
  5. No comments at all on the ECM? I'm not surprised.....
  6. Those "forecasts" are absolutely useless, trust me.
  7. ECM is a good run for Scotland. UKMO is better up to 120 hrs (one of the best charts I've seen for here) but after this, ECM looks pretty nice. Obviously a lot of chopping and changing still to come and FI must be at an all time low of about +06 hrs. At last the models are in A BIT more agreement than they were this time yesterday.
  8. Thanks for that Snow-Man, downloaded it and working. Look forward to more of them.
  9. *sigh* I don't have PowerPoint on my laptop so can't view it.
  10. Going by the latest model output, you could see some snowfall. Although you're on the coast, you're in an exposed position to pick up showers being blown in from an Easterly/South Easterly wind.
  11. You'd probably be too high up at that altitude with all the snow clouds down below you.
  12. Dundee does well in Easterlies. When there's a direct Northerly, we get nothing whereas Aberdeen can get plastered, but when the wind swings around to the East, we can get some good snowfalls here. Dundee is about 8-10 miles inland whereas Aberdeen is bang on the coast, so it's less marginal for us and colder in these setups than Aberdeen. I remember the "weak easterly" of February 2005 really well because we got some good snowfalls here, whereas the vast majority of people on here complaining of a non-event whereas 2 nights in a row we had heavy snowfalls. TWS- yeah thank god the 18z was NOTHING like the ECM. I'm quite relieved!
  13. Thanks TWS and John. Let's hope the 18z doesn't follow the ECM path.
  14. Thanks TWS. I take it I can put Dundee alongside Edinburgh and Aberdeen on your regional thoughts for snow?
  15. Yes I read your blog earlier John and found it very informative. Thanks
  16. How much snow will there be in Dundee? ( a ) 10 inches ( b ) 15 inches ( c ) 20 inches lol.... Seriously though, if the current UKMO and GFS output were to come to fruition then I'd expect to see some snow at the very least.
  17. Hi TWS and stargazer. on Trevor Harleys site at http://www.personal.dundee.ac.uk/~taharley..._in_january.htm Between the 7th of January and 20th of January, only one day recorded an above freezing temperature at Gatwick. (that reading was 1C with the other 12 days ranging from 0c to -7. in South London a temperature of -9.1C was recorded, "probably equalling or lower than the previous lowest minimum in London (see 1841 and 1867)." 50cms of snow fell in Cornwall and 45cms in some Eastern parts. The 12th of January saw many places receive their coldest day of the century. If only we could get a cold spell like that now! <_<
  18. I think that the Easterly that occurred in January 1987 was the coldest one for at least 60 years... Just looking at this chart makes my eyes water, it must have been mindnumblingly cold... http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00219870112.gif  (I think this is the coldest chart that exists for the UK that is in the wetterzentrale archives dating back to 1948) There must have been a lot of snow in Eastern areas. (Pity I wasn't in Dundee at the time). http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/ra/19...00119870112.gif I was only 7 at the time and was living in N. Ireland so I was too young to remember. Imagine if we got a a few charts like those at +96 hours this winter....
  19. That's not true. Aberdeen is 60 miles further up the NE coast of Scotland and is in a much more exposed location to a Northerly wind than Dundee, so in winter when there's a Northerly wind, Aberdeen gets snow while Dundee gets nothing. However, when there is an Easterly component, whether the wind comes from a NNE, NE, E or SE direction in winter, Dundee can get a LOT of snow. Dundee normally fares much better than Aberdeen when it comes to the classic "breakdown" snowfalls where temperatures can be marginal Not to forget- the highest point in Dundee City is 175 ASL. Being right on the coast doesn't always benefit Aberdeen when it comes to snowfall, but from a Northerly it certainly puts them in the firing line. Great idea this "Fantasy Snow League" Stratos. Should be good fun. I'll put my locations in later. This is my first post since April.
