  1. Heavy rain sets in across northeast New South Wales

    Press Release, Thursday September 4, 2008 - 14:32 EST

Northeast New South Wales is receiving a drenching this afternoon, with more rain on the way for the rest of the week, according to weatherzone.com.au.

Rainfall totals in excess of 50mm were reported from the Hunter and Mid North Coast districts in the 24 hours to 9am today, while falls of up to an inch have been recorded today in the Northern Rivers district.

A Flood Watch is in force for many river systems in the Northern Rivers district, including the Tweed Valley, Brunswick Valley and Richmond River systems. A Severe Weather Warning is also in effect for the Northern Rivers warning of the potential for flash flooding.

"A low pressure system that is forming over southeast Queensland is directing moist easterly winds across northeast New South Wales. As these winds are forced to rise over the ranges, heavy rain results," weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Matt Pearce said.

"The low will move further south on Friday, so winds and rain will increase along the northern half of the New South Wales coast. We are looking at widespread totals between 50 and 100 millimetres, with some local falls even higher than that."

Large seas will also be whipped up along the New South Wales coastline, peaking across the weekend, as the low moves out into the Tasman.

Both Moree and Warrego radars showing some massive rainbands forming with near perfect cloud formation on satellite. From nothing in past 24hours! Gale wind warning for here tomorrow. Looks like gonna be ugly rain/wind event due to low pressure could form anywhere over us! Friday could be worse, even winds could hit 100km/hr at times and even some localized flooding?

Ballina airport only reported small hailstones, 45km/hr wind gusts and 32mm of rainfalls. My best photos of the gust front is on other camera.

    Synoptic Situation

A high, presently located near Tasmania, is moving slowly east and is expected to move into the southern Tasman Sea during the day. The high is directing a south to southeast airstream along New South Wales coast which will turn more northeasterly in the south. There is an increasing likelihood of the development of a deep low in northern Tasman Sea/Coral Sea during next week, with a hint that the low might track towards the Queensland/NSW border towards the latter part of the week.
