TOO YOUNG: Cliffton Holmes, 22, who died late on Saturday%afternoon near Rappville. His uncle and grandfather also were killed

    ROAD CLAIMS THIRD FAMILY MEMBER

    25.09.2007

    By Alex Easton

WYAN ROAD, near Rappville, isnt known for its fatal crashes, but Cliffton Holmes on Saturday became the third member of his family to die on it.

Cliffton, 22, of Yorklea, died after losing control of his 1995 Ford Falcon on a bend while driving home from work during an intense storm. Two passengers were injured, with one yesterday still critical.

Family and friends who gathered yesterday to pay tribute to the kind and confident larrikin said Cliffton died on the same corner as his uncle, who crashed while driving home in the opposite direction from work in 1993.

Cliftons grandfather died about 20 years ago in a crash only a couple of kilometres further down the road.

But they said there was nothing wrong with the road, saying the storm was the main culprit.

Cliffton was a man who loved his cars, or, more precisely, his Falcons.

Every car hed ever owned was a Falcon hed bought the EF model he died in two weeks earlier and was already planning modifications such as a new exhaust and paint job.

That was the way it went with Cliffton and cars. Hed buy one and then as fast as he could save the money would change the exhaust, have the car lowered, the windows tinted and the paint redone before showering it with love.

Friends said he could spend full and happy days buffing one of his cars. Beyond that was a deep loyalty to family and friends.

The Holmes siblings Cameron, 23, Travis, 20, Bartley, 18, Hayden, 12, and Chantelle, 16 are a tight-knit bunch. They said Cliffton was always ready to offer help when it was needed. But he was also known as a rebel with little time for the judgment of strangers.

One friend described him as a gentleman who went out of his way to make people feel welcome.

Travis, whose partner Carla was expected to give birth to their first child yesterday, said they would name their new son Connor Cliffton Artie Holmes to honour his brother.

He was my brother and my best mate, and there will never be another person like him, Travis said.

An informal funeral service is planned for Friday, with a Falcon XR8 ute, pumping out Clifftons favourite tunes, in place of a hearse.

The family thanked the ambulance officers and rescue helicopter crew who braved Saturdays storm to try to save Cliffton.

  3. Yorklea driver dies in crash during storm

    24.09.2007

    By HANNAH ROSS

A CAR accident on Wyan Road near Rappville on Saturday evening claimed the life of Yorklea local Clifton Holmes.

The accident happened soon after 4pm on a bend in the quiet country road, just as violent rain and lightning were hitting the area.

Clifton was driving the car, which failed to negotiate the corner and slammed into a power pole.

The 22-year-old died at the scene.

The front seat passenger, an 18-year-old Casino man, suffered serious head injuries in the accident. It took State Emergency Service volunteers close to an hour to get him out of the car.

He was airlifted by the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter to Lismore Base Hospital.

At about midnight on Saturday he was transferred to the Gold Coast Hospital, where last night he remained in a critical condition.

A 19-year-old who was a passenger in the back seat of the car was treated at Lismore Base Hospital for minor injuries.

It is believed the accident happened as Clifton and his passengers were travelling home after the end of their shift at the%Richards Milling Company in Wyan.

A Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter crew member said the helicopter battled storms to make it out to the accident site, about 20 minutes by road south-west of Casino.

Clifton was the second oldest in a family of six children, including four brothers and a sister.

  4. Thunderstorms threaten NSW and QLD

    Tom Saunders, Saturday September 22, 2007 - 17:56 EST

The first widespread thunderstorm event of spring brought heavy rain and hail to southeast Queensland and northeast NSW on Saturday afternoon.

The storms dumped a massive 108mm on Coffs Harbour in just a few hours, about double the rain they normally receive in an entire September. Other notable falls to 5pm included 29mm at Port Macquarie and 27mm at Burleigh Waters.

The storms prompted warnings for southeast Queensland and northeast NSW with weatherzone meteorologist Thomas Saunders saying "the storms will bring further heavy falls tonight, especially near the border, before they clear into the Coral Sea on Sunday morning with a trough."

However Saunders warned "storms are again likely to affect northeast NSW and southeast Queensland towards the middle and end of next week when another trough arrives."

  13. EXTENDED OUTLOOK

The weather across the state next week will be dominated by a series of cold fronts which will move across southern and central areas of the state. The first will move across the west of the state during Monday and reach most eastern districts on Tuesday. The front will split on Wednesday with the southern section moving off the southern coast while the northern section will come to a halt over the tropical inland. In the wake of the front a high will move across northern NSW and southern Qld reaching the southern coral Sea on Thursday. The next front will then spread across most western and southern areas of the state during Friday and Saturday.

Some middle to high cloud with showers and storms with possible rain will

develop over the southern and south-east interior on Monday and then contract across the south-east corner on Tuesday before clearing seawards. The following high will then spread dry and cooler air across southern and central areas of the state. Warmer N'ly winds over southern and central Qld will precede the front during Monday and Tuesday and become fresh to strong along the far southern coast during Tuesday. As the following high moves into and across the southern Coral Sea late in the week winds will again shift warmer N'ly over western central and southern districts. A cloud band will accompany this front eastwards as will some showers and storms.

Good start from today, we had 5mm out of small moderate shower which this is near to thundery shower level. Few cells had formed over western parts of NR area,
