  7. Twister wreaks havoc in Dunoon

    27.10.2007

    By ANDY PARKS

A FREAK tornado has ripped through the village of Dunoon.

The twister struck without warning yesterday afternoon around 4pm and within moments had all but destroyed a large section of the village.

Residents who were in the village at the time said the tornado was massive. Will Mercer said it was like something straight out of the movie Twister.

It was spiralling round and round. It was a massive great big thing, he said.

We saw it coming over Modanville, then it disappeared and reappeared about five minutes later. But instead of moving, it seemed to stay in the same location.

There was debris in the air, sheets of iron, all sorts of stuff.

Mr Mercer said he then saw a big flash that he believed was the power sub-station blowing up.

His daughter Lilly said it was like a big whirly whirly. I was at home in the pool and hail started coming down. It was really scary.

The tornado blew the walls out of St Matthews Anglican Church, ripped walls and roofs off about 20 houses and felled power lines in at least three places. The main street of Dunoon was closed to all traffic, leaving residents stranded, many of them not knowing if their houses were still intact. Phone lines were also down, making it impossible for those stranded outside of the police line to contact family and friends.

There were also reports of damage to the local school and facilities around the sports club. SES workers conducted a door-to-door search to see if anybody had been injured. An evacuation point was established at the Sports Club where the SES set up a generator for families whose houses had been damaged.

Dunoon Sports Club manager, Bernadette Ross hadnt been able to leave the club by 8Pm last night, but feared her house near The Channon had been reduced to matchsticks.

    Minister visits hail damaged school

    27.10.2007

    By Alex Easton

ICE lay in clumps two house bricks high when Steve Jones got to Richmond River High School two days after this months hailstorm.

But it wasnt the ice the schools computer co-ordinator was worried about.

The storm caused extensive damage, smashing about 375 windows and flinging broken glass and giant hailstones through thankfully empty classrooms. It wrecked about 38 computers.

Broken windows backed by wooden boards still adorned the front of the school yesterday when NSW Education Minister John Della Bosca arrived to announce new air-conditioners for the school.

Mr Della Bosca expected damage when he arrived to inspect normal repair work at the 90-year-old school, but he was obviously surprised at the extent of storm damage.

School staff said the Department of Education and Training was trying to replace the windows, but the damage across Lismore from the storm meant the city now had a glass shortage.

Despite the level of storm damage, school principal Neville Ryan and P&C president Cheryl Amor had other issues to press on the Minister.

Both said the age of the school building, its status as a heritage building and the fact the area was flood-prone meant Richmond River Highs existing maintenance budget was not keeping up with the amount of work needed to keep the school and facilities in good shape.

Problems ranged from cracks in the buildings from the shifting pug soils it was built on, to rusted roofs and treacherous footpaths.

Mr Della Bosca said NSW had increased funding for school maintenance, but agreed many still struggled.

The department was reviewing school maintenance programs to see if the way money was spent could be improved and how it was allocated to schools with unique issues.

  8. Mini-tornado rips through town

MORE than 3000 homes are without power and at least 20 homes have damaged roofs after brutal storms - and even a mini-tornado - lashed northern NSW.

A Country Energy spokeswoman said Lismore and dozens of surrounding towns were left without power last night

"We're working through the night to restore power and, depending on the severity of the damage, many homes will have power by (today)," she said.

At least 20 homes and a number of other buildings suffered roof damage in the town of Dunoon, 10km from Lismore - with a mini-twister even ripping up an electricity substation.

A stray piece of tin was blown into an insulator, causing a short circuit and shutting down power.

    Watch the video below.

Two Dunoon homes lost their roofs and significant damage was recorded at a church and local school

An SES spokeswoman said two demountable buildings at the school were badly hit.

The North Coast town was declared a natural disaster zone earlier this month when a devastating hailstorm caused more than $5 million damage.

Hundreds of homes and cars were smashed, crops destroyed and 21 people left with minor injuries.

The SES was last night responding to more than 40 requests for assistance, mostly in the south of the town.

Large hailstones and destructive winds also battered Grafton, Byron Bay and Mullumbimby.
