  1. This first signs of the snow appearing. http://www2.wetter3.de/Animation_06_UTC/36_30.gif The big event is coming closer. http://www2.wetter3.de/Animation_06_UTC/108_30.gif http://www2.wetter3.de/Animation_06_UTC/114_30.gif This is a sensational chart though from UKMO http://85.214.49.20/pics/Rukm1201.gif :o GFS at the same time. http://85.214.49.20/pics/Rtavn1201.png
  2. Lets hope the trend continues on the 0z run. Goodnight all.
  3. Where`s Steve Murr. What a huge uprade in just one run. This is going to be a battle now. http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn1201.png http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn1321.png http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn1501.png I`d rather see this come off a very cold surface east/SE wind.
  4. Yes there`s going to be a few factors to take here as the upper air is between -2 and -5c. The more SE to east wind the better, what happened last mid-March the wind was S/SE and it surprised me how long the cold air lasted last time must of been 1996 but the wind turned more to the east, must of been some very low dew points then the milder air come at night as the wind turned to the S/SW I knew it was over then, but this looks different,a NW is coming in. http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rmgfs1202.gif http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rmgfs1232.gif http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rmgfs1262.gif The surface temps also at freezing or below so it could even be freezing rain too, but of course it can still change for better or worse. http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rmgfs1238.gif It could easily be a bigger snow event than some think.
  5. Yes I like the look of the ECM more southerly tracking lows and colder upper air. It showed a similar chart the other day but the upper air was 0c. Meanwhile the JMA looks similar to the GFS at T120. http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rjma1201.gif
  6. Well spotted could be interesting. http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn1024.png http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn1921.png http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn19217.png The cold air seems to want to hang on in this run.
  7. http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn1201.png http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn1261.png The first system could grind to a halt. http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn1322.png
  8. More of a SE on this run,better than the 6z. http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn961.png http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn1021.png

  10. I was thinking about this yesterday about past winters and the early 80s bitter then 85/87 the cold spell returned big time then feb 1991 was bitter 95/97 was the highlight of the mid 90`s Jan 2001 was cold followed by feb 2005/March 2006. Anyway strange why the cold spells are in a pattern 80/82:85/87:Feb91:95/97:Jan2001/2005/06 not lasting so long either.
  11. Well last year goes into one of my favourite winters. Agree there like last winter was great, so far this is the worst winter I`ve seen yet but it could easily change and if we do get a major cold spell it could be memorable especially after the storms. And the record breaking autumn is another. The winter of 1987/88 was extremely dissappointing after the previous winters. Summer of 1988 as Summer of 95 said and a more recent one in 2004 never known such a wet summer, the thunderstorms made up for that though in august. I love thunderstorms but one in 1985 was frightening, not seen one like that since. There are more but must dash. That`s interesting same here, except it was exciting/Scary at the same time. It was worse than Jan 1990,much more violent I thought.
  12. You must of had it colder but the frosts were`t bad at all the ice is quite thick and the ground was hard. It was better than this which only gave 2 frosts. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/2004/...00120040117.png http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive/2004/...00120040118.png But so far this January I`ve only recorded 4 air frosts all from this cold snap which is better than a 1/2 day toppler 5 if you count 0.3c. As last Jan I had 13 air frosts and more snow. Snow grains that day though with an extra dusting and 0.5c max. Snow the following day with a good covering. I`d love to see an easterly like last winter I lost count how many easterly days we had But a NW is nice to see today even even though it`s milder makes a change after those long run of SW winds.
  13. Nice pics! That`s the type of snow I like to see, not wet stuff as that type will drift if the temps stay low and wind of course. The last traces of snow here are disappearing now but it`s not going as quickly as that as it`s been frozen over so it`s more like icey snow,it`ll be gone by later though
  14. Overall I`ll give the cold 3.5/10 but 8/10 for the daytime temp 2 days ago which was just 1.0c and snow just 1/10 as it was a similar amount to April`s last year but it was patchy and wet, with just a slight covering which was the most april snow since April 2000 and I`d rate that an 11/10 for cold and snow. 8P
  15. That`s one to watch it`s -0.3c here but it will probably rise, as further south looks colder. http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn1817.png http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn184.png http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rmgfs212.gif
  16. Hopefully charts similar to this. The start of one of my favourte winters ever in 1986.
  17. The best snowfall since April believe it or not so very poor, but the wind direction wasn`t favourable. Very little ppn here also and wrong side of marginal one night, but very little then anyway. Temperature wise not too bad as we had our coldest night at -2.4c last night since March 23rd -2.7c then. The snow still hasn`t thawed out of the wind in the shade down here either as there`s still a few patches left,it`s gone everywhere else, except over the distant hills. But the best thing about this is the hard frosts 2 days ago and again last night and sunny/clear which has dried everything up.
  18. I`m going with my original stab of 2.8c going by the last 2 years it`ll make more of a tumble and I hope it comes close as the end of last feb was a corker
  19. Still a little snow left in the shade/roof and on the top fields as the temp reached 3.2c now tumbling at -0.8c about time we had a hard frost to harden the ground
  20. Had a slight covering of snow, and saw a snow shower at dawn temp dropped to 0.4c after the snow now 2.7c still some snow left in the shade our lawn is still white over.
  21. It`s just turned to wet snow/hail and sticking to the bin at 2.0c
  22. Had a mix of rain/hail then a sleet shower a hour ago at 3.6c now 3.8c and sunny.
  23. It`s one of the worst storms I`ve known too as you say worse than then I agree. There`s more damage down than I thought there was going to be.
  24. Agreed I`ve missed quite a few lately, she said that today is colder but still above average temps and showed the pressure charts for everyday which is how the Farming forecast use to be. Snow was showing for the north of england/Pennines around midweek as the system tracks north with temps of 5c. A very wet 2nd half of the week with Thursday that`ll be the day to watch alright.
  25. Well the lastest run shows a killer storm next thursday,it is a week away but todays storm was stronger than expected and the way this winter shaping it`s somewhat like the 1990`s storms. http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn1681.png http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/Rtavn1741.png Hopefully it`ll downgrade from that slightly.
