A major factor - you only need to see the floods arond Lea -  Salwick  - Hoyles Lane -  Bartle

They are pumping water off the fields even when it's dry because of the lack of drainage soil area

In my time of living round here  I havent seen the like of the amount of water there is now.

Ridiculous -  and it's all down to the obscene amount of housing development (they dont even provide decent footpaths)

Then again x amount of council tax per house x15000 houses?

A money spinner indeed - and wait till the new junction is finished.....

Agree 100%. They've systematically ruined the W/NW side of Preston. No proper infrastructure being provided, schools, doctors, community areas ..... roads as they were before the houses etc etc.

And as you say there will be problems when we get rainfall like yesterday.

Just to add to what i was saying before i've found the river data :

Check your risk of flooding: get current flood warnings, river and sea levels, check the 5-day forecast or use flood risk maps

Surely it can't be as bad as the Boxing Day floods in December 2015 though?

Just a waterlogged flowerbed and a puddle in the back garden here. Though I don't live in a flood-prone area.

For sustained river levels yes 2015 was worse, but the speed and severity of the rise in the river level this was much worse.

I've not seen the road down to samelsbury closed before by the police due to flooding, let alone both slip roads onto and off the M6 at jn31.

I think it was more the speed which the river rose that caught alot of people out ..... there was water in places i've never seen water before.  Now that could have alot to do with all the new houses being built as well and a lack of proper drainage but thats another story entirely.

  3. Quite a storm today really. We are still seeing the effects here at the moment. River Ribble has reached its highest ever recorded level at 17.30 of 6.42 meters at the Samelsbury gauge. M6 has been closed on and off all afternoon, Preston station remains shut and fhe main rd from Preston to Blackburn is closed as the bridge crosses that crosses the river is deemed unsafe.

Numerous properties and businesses are flooded - I've never seen anything like it in my lifetime.

I think there could be incredible storm off the Cumbrian coast, darker cloud to the NE but can't see any lightning from that, rain got slightly heavier but apart from that, a bit of a feeble attempt and how quickly the electrical side of the storm just died is incredible.

Wouldn't be surprised to see it intensify again as it moves out over Morecambe Bay.  Theres a few cells N/NW of Barrow at the moment.  Nothing here other than light rain a few rumbles. The storm to my East just died and pretty quickly too.

The north west definitely seems pretty crap for heavy snowfalls. Regularly get a inch or two from a streamer or stray shower but never seem to get 6 inches+ (which is what I'd class as a good fall).

.... And you are further inland than we are here  we seem to be in our own little micro climate as far as snow is concerned in this part of the country ..... thats why I hate it when the media in general use terms like widespread and countrywide. I mean its even snowing in Newquay ......

  6. We were on the very northerly edge of the ppn from tuesday night.  Left a cm here and there - some of which is still around this morning.  There's hardly any snow at all north of Preston, but all the hills to the east of the M6 are snow covered and the lakeland fells all look well covered.

We've had more snow over the past 7 days here from showers that we got over the whole of last winter - admittedly not alot by some folks standards but for here up to now its been a snowy winter

  7. It is .... but they need to set up in the right pllace for us .... the optimist in me says we'll get the showers .... the realist looking at the wind direction says we need more of a NW not the SW thats forecast into tomorrow.

    Hey bud.

In work so no access to telly etc. Looking at the charts it looked more like north Cheshire and MCR that were going to be hit. Is Crewe etc in the firing line? Only asking as it doesn't look like it on the raw charts.

I fear that after the will it wont it snow of today those of us further north in the region may also miss out on the fun overnight as well.  Those ppn charts and the latest met office forecast do not bode well for those further north.

Yes, not quite sure how it can only affect one precipitation type- as you say, it doesn't stop the rain. I certainly have no explanation for it.

You aren't the only ones ... we have the same shadow effect here where snow is concerned .... and again it doesn't have the same effect when the rain comes from the same direction
