Thunderstorms appear to give you the same relief in summer as snow does to me in winter. Β Dingy grey suddenly replaced by bright white as if by magic. Β Before I understood SAD I used to go hill walking, climbing and skiing in the snowy Highlands/Snowdonia/Lake District as many weekends as possible. Β It was the β€œdrug” that got me through. Β Can’t do it with work/ family etc now though. Β Maybe you need to take up caving in summer?!!

Funny you should say that @Maz… I’m very much one of those folk who thrives on his own company.

I fully get where you’re coming from with the idea of caving… I swear I should have been born a bat or a mole… Or some other darkness loving creature. Lol πŸ˜‚ πŸ‘πŸ»

    Hi there,

I suffer from SAD, so on the face of it find it hard to empathise with someone looking forward to the dark days. Β However reading your and others posts on here I’ve come to understand. Β
    Β

Also, I’m autistic, with heightened sensory perception for light. Β I always wear sunglasses and a peaked cap April - September and often beyond. Β Despite that I love bright days. However, once the light deficit really kicks in (December) I really struggle to keep functioning for a few weeks.

Anyway, was posting as it’s the first non overcast evening where I’ve noticed the light dipping earlier. Β No big thing, months for me when light levels are perfectly adequate. Β Still, something I always note, and Β always brings that bit of dread to the back of my mind.

    Β

    Good morning @MazΒ πŸ™‚

Thank your understanding on Reverse SAD. I appreciate that not many folk do understand my craving for darkness. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind a bit of sunshine, but I also like my quota of darkness as well, and sadly I don’t get that at this time of year.Β
    Β

This year has been a particularly tough and challenging one for me, mainly because June (from an IMBY perspective) was more or less none stop sunlight. Admittedly there were a couple of thunderstorms that made life a lot easier; but on the whole it felt like it was just none stop overhead glaring sunlight with no escape for me.Β

Quite a lot of words in that post, but not a single one I can agree with! Just goes to show how different we all are πŸ™‚

CouldΒ  you please enlighten us as to why you like darkness?Β  I truly don't understand.

    Morning @ChannelThunderand @sarahngπŸ™‚

I’m so sorry for the delay in replying… Real life and what have you.Β
    Β

I appreciate there are many, many folk, like your good selves, who totally disagree with me, and who can’t understand.Β
    Β

I’ve never personally liked the summer period, whilst I admit I’m not a fan of the heat, I can accept that more due to the fact that it can generate thunderstorms. No pain, no gain as they say. Lol πŸ˜‚Β

But do you remember that autumn heatwave of late September, early October 2011? Now whilst we touched 29/30Β° I found that a lot more bearable due to the shorter days. πŸ™‚

But for me, it’s that horrible glarey overhead summer sunlight that I truly hate.Β
Back in 2005(? ish) I was diagnosed with autism … and for me there is just no escape from the light at this time of year.Β
An example of how too much light can affect people is that my local Tesco’s now have β€˜quiet times’ (usually early morning and late evening) where they turn off some of the in store lights… Needless to say, guess when I do my shopping? Lol πŸ˜‚ πŸ›’

It was thanks to the Netweather forum (don’t ask me which thread, as I honestly can’t remember) that I discovered β€˜Reverse SAD’ or β€˜Summer SAD’ was a thing! At that point I felt a little bit less like a weirdo, as I found out there were others, Β many others like me. 😊

Plus going back years, and years ago to when I was little, if there was going to be a big family argument or row (which I absolutely hate) it would be summer time when it would happen. So bad memories like that all help to make me dread the mid summer period. πŸ™
    Β

As folk have said on here, in the depths of winter, they like to escape to escape to South America, or Australia/New Zealand during the winter, I could gladly do that during the summer, just to escape the excess light that we have here.Β

    Β

Now before anyone suggests it, as in why don’t I do that? I can assure you, that it’s not quite as easy as β€˜just sorting out your finances and you’re off’. Family commitments, job, etc, etc… kinda prevent me from doing that.Β

Now July and August, are both summer months… But I can tolerate these far better knowing that we’re on our way out of summer, rather than on the way in. πŸ™‚

There was a period around 2015 -2019 when my summer SAD wasn’t too bad, and that includes 2018! But then in late April 2020, I sadly lost my Dad, and my Summer SAD returned with a vengeance… Like it was on steroids or something. πŸ™

I really wish I could explain better to you both, but hey.Β

  4. The time is 15:57 and at long, long last; the summer solstice has just occurred!Β πŸ₯³

    Β

Yes folks, the pendulum has finally reached the end of its stroke!

Speaking as a reverse S.A.D. sufferer this is truly as bad as it can get! Around five weeks ago, my part of the world entered the world of the lingering twilight; I’m not gonna lie, those five weeks have been a long, long hard and torturous haul for me.Β

    Β

Some people will say that we’re now on a slippery slope; but I see it as a break, a rest, a chance to enjoy the freewheel after an extremely long, and hard and arduous climb to the solstice.Β

    Β

I’m looking forward to the increasing darkness, like welcoming an old friend who’s been away.Β πŸ™‚

    Β

I’m fully aware that summer 2023 has still got a fair few nasty tricks up its sleeve, but this corner/milestone now being turned/reached is something that needs celebrating!Β

In other words, I’m going to be celebrating the fact that we’re now on our way out of summer, instead of on the way in!Β πŸ₯³

    Β

I’m also looking forward to the shortening of the days, gathering mists, and ripening fruits, as we now head towards autumn. 😊

    Β

Yes folks, cheer up; as there is darkness at the end of the tunnel!Β πŸ˜πŸ‘πŸ»

    Β

🎡The summer sun is fading as the year grows old. 🎢 And darker days are drawing near. 🎢The winter winds will be much colderβ€¦πŸŽ΅

Yes I can't wait too. Birds starting to make a racket at 3:30am and the sun getting to work early heating the house up all fill me with dread. When the night's become longer than the days is really when a big smile goes on my face, that's almost always a sign winter we can say bye to heatwaves and winter isn't a million miles away.

Seconded, thirded and fourthed @Dark HorseπŸ™‚

  6. Just one week to go until the summer solstice... I'm not gonna lie, since around mid May all I have had is inescapable warmth and that horrible glary overhead sun, so as a reverse SAD sufferer, this year has been absolute torture for me.Β πŸ₯Ί

One more week... I can do this... Just one more week until the 'tide starts to turn'... This is now so close I can almost taste the finish line.Β

Edit: I tell a small lie, as I did have four thunderstorms over the past weekend.Β
