  1. Classic westerly, blustery showers with no cloud breaks inbetween. We've exchanged polar maritime air for tropical maritime air.. hence no cloud breaks. Preety miserable.
  2. Not a fan of November weather. Usually mild wet and dark. However, my spirits are high with the promise of winter and Christmas to come. The worst prospect is a wet windy mild December.. only Christmas takes the edge off it. Without Christmas oh dear how miserable a month would December be when combined with wet windy mild weather. Early January can be a dire period though post christmas slump, very dark still and more often mild wet and windy still. By mid Jan likelihood of colder drier conditions increases along with snow chances and the light slowly comes back..
  3. Widespread air frost expected in NE Scotland tonight. Many parts of eastern Scotland and possibly sheltered eastern parts of Engkand may see first ground frost of the season before the next front moves in.
  4. Very fresh out there.. very autumnal. Currently 10 degrees. Polar air doing its business. Been ages since we've had a dose of true Polar maritime air.
  5. At last a day that felt autumnal! Very heavy pulses of rain at times, significant totals, chilly feeling temps around 10-11 degree mark. Bring on autumn! Just need the first frost now! and storm! - the latter this weekend, but may have to wait a while for the frost.
  6. Mmm can't say I would like to see another winter akin to 98/99. Was generally wet and mild, but as said there were a handful of northerly outbreaks, most notably second week of Feb which delivered some snow. Too much of the winter was very wet and mild though. Could live with a Nov 98 and start to Dec 98, but then something else please.
  7. First day of very heavy rain during daylight hours at least for many many weeks. Significant totals, which is pleasing given how low the reservoirs and rivers are now. Definate shift in feel of things this week, from last week's balmy late summerness, to almost dark late autumness, a day that wouldn't feel out of place in late November.
  8. La Nina imprint wouldn't suggest anything long lived southerly sourced.. more likely mid Atlantic heights and greater potential for something more northerly sourced.. dare I say arctic as October wears on.. northerlies quite possible. Just my feeling on things..
  9. Just me in here.. mmm slight chance of a couple of coldish nights inbetween the rain bands this week but not cold enough as skies unlikely to stay clear for long and wind too brisk. Nothing on the horizon suggest widespread frost any time soon.
  10. This year has been very different to 1998 though which started with a super El Nino and very mild winter. The summer was much more disturbed than the one just gone. May brought an excellent lengthy sunny warm spell unlike this year.
  11. Can't recall that one. I remember 16 Dec 10 that was a super cold front that brought sub freezing max behind it.
  12. My ideal October is a very mixed month. One that becomes progressively cold. A couple of stormy spells, first air frosts of the season, first bit of snow on the fells, first properly cold feeling day, a late burst of warmth and sunshine before mid month. Not too much to ask..
  13. I'm more positive about winter prospects when cold in November comes courtesy of arctic airstreams or an unusual cold easterly or north easterly rather than anticyclonic cold as was the case in 98, also 2016 to an extent. Diving troughs with cold NW blasts are a positive signal as well. The cold in late Nov 08 was the first time since 96-97 I thought mmm this winter might be different..and it was compared to everything since early winter 96-97..
  14. November 98 was quite cold. A fair amount of frosty foggy weather mid-month I remember. There was a snowy northerly early in December but much of the month was mild wet and windy with one or two shortlived polar outbreaks.
  15. October 1998 from memory was a very typical. Wet and atlantic driven with some chilly weather at times.
  16. The first half of 2016 was quite different to first half of 2021.
  17. October often delivers a late blast of warmth, but with a much weaker sun and less daylight such events rarely feel especially warm.
  18. Similar effect to an arctic cold front in winter that can easily see a drop of 6 degrees or more in temp once one moves through.
  19. A cold front with business.. kicked away the dank humidity of the weekend. Awoke to heavy rain and much fresher. Current temp 14.3 degrees, much more how you expect a late September day to be.
  20. Are we about to see another April to May flip. April very dry May very wet. Often happens long dry spells quickly followed by wet spells at the flick of a switch. October is often a very wet month in the Lake District.
  21. November 2017 brought some cold weather at times in the second half. Remember a bitter northerly. December started very cold a bit like 2008 then warmed up in the run in to Christmas before turning a bit colder briefly between Christmas and new year. Unusually quite a number of recent Decembers have started off cold.
  22. Unlike most cold fronts of recent weeks, finally a cold front that means business and is going to bring a marked drop in temp. Hence the squall line and heavy rain expected.
  23. Yes not had a heavier single snowfall since here, 18 inches.
  24. Yes increasingly September is becoming an extension of summer it seems. Up until the equinox I call late summer. Often warmer than first half of June. Just as I feel March up until the equinox is late winter, especially in the north. Often colder than much of December. Spring and especially autumn have shortened.. My timeline of the seasons: Early Spring: Mid March to mid April Mid Spring: Mid April to mid May Late Spring: Mid May to early June Early summer: Mid June to mid July High summer: Mid July to early August Late Summer: Mid August to mid September Early autumn: Late Sept to mid October Mid Autumn: Mid Oct to mid Nov Late autumn: Mid Nov to early Dec Early winter: Mid Dec to mid Jan High winter: Late Jan to mid Feb Late winter: Mid Feb to mid March
