As everyone embarking on the mid to late 40s dreams of, I've had to move in with my Dad for a while as he recovers from illness. He lives in a village that lies at the foot of the Pennines in Cumbria and is prone to the Helm Wind; apparently the only named wind in the UK. He's lived in the house for years, and while I know it can get windy there, I've never really experienced what the Helm Wind can do. Here area a few videos to give you an idea....

Bear in mind that it can be almost dead calm just 3 or 4 miles away.
I hate wind, but it can be quite pretty, particularly when it forms a Helm bar...a bank of cloud which breaks off and hangs over the Eden Valley. I still hate wind though.

And the benefit of a Greenland High is the blocking it provides against an Atlantic onslaught? I've only been here for 11 years - you're going to have to bear with me.

We're going to be a bit stricter about off-topic posting while it could potentially turn cold. Please use the ramp/moan thread for anything that isn't model-related and anyone who says "I know this is off topic but" and still posts, will be banned.

Just to remind people, this is the Model Discussion Thread, not the Ian Ferguson Twitter Thread!

This is the Model Discussion Thread. In fairness to those who want to visit the Model Discussion Thread to see discussion about, or discuss, model output, please stick to model discussion.
I hope that clarifies things?!

Makes me a bit sullen.

Wettest place in the UK had 70.4mm? I had 21mm more than that. I know I'm not official but that's a very low total for the wettest place.

Oh I see - sorry! I meant Nov 2010 when we had all the lying snow and a sub zero end to the month.
No wonder you were confused!
-
Highest temp 13.6º
Lowest temp -6.4º
Mean temp 3.4º
Air frosts 17

I'm baffled why you are comparing it to last November given it was exceptionally mild? Unless you mean November 2005?
I was just simply comparing it to last year because it's the most recent comparison to hand!
-
The mean temperature here for November was 3.4º with 17 separate air frosts. This beats even Nov 2015 for number of frosts and the mean temp (if you're looking for cold).
I do wonder why so many people pore over the models looking for cold when actually what we had in November was quite noteworthy in itself.

Is that going to be a New Year's Resolution?

We still have Feb I guess.
We still have January to be fair; it's December.

Virtual drought conditions here with just 5mm so far today and only 28.4mm so far this month.

Call yourself a northerner? Dropped down to 2.7º here this morning, but rising rapidly under the unforgiving Cumbrian Sun, and is currently 13.4º.a low of 11.4C -
Reached 17.6º earlier, which appallingly, is the warmest so far this month!
-
Went to bed last night looking forward to a day of unbroken sunshine and warm temperatures.
11.4º and raining.
-
Quite chilly last night with a minimum of 4.5º. Now almost clear blue skies and 12.9º.
-
Brightening up now after 11.2mm of rain since midnight.
-
12.4º and quite heavy rain with 4.8mm falling since it started about an hour ago.

Would have given you something to moan about! wink.gif.

I've just been through and removed quite a few posts, many of which I agree with, but none of which add anything to the discussion. Even at this time of year, can we please stay on topic? If there's a particular member you don't like, send them hate mail, just don't litter this thread with comments.
The Helm Wind

Aye - well, the snow in the photos was from the late Feb/early March dumping and the snow in the videos was from a few weeks later. The last patch on Cross Fell disappeared only this week.
