  1. Yes here in midlands it felt scorching in the sun in recent days as early as 10am in the morning completely overriding the arctic air, the less cold air over the weekend because of cloudy damp conditions will feel colder, day length is the same as late September now so its no wonder the sun is so strong.

  2. Apart from tuesday which was wonderfully spring like and sunny its been absolutely horrendous until now with very murky conditions and persistent light rainfall and not feeling that mild without no sun at all and all from very mild air from the south showing the mildies mild atlantic air is no good for sunny spring like weather, funny enough the cold they hate so much will bring some lovely sunshine later this week and it will feel more springlike than much milder uppers of late last week yet they still hunt for those mild moist SW'lys :D

  3. Yes its been a pretty good winter overall with cold snaps/spells in each winter month even December had a cold first half and January offered many their best snow cover in a long time, February has seen less snow cover than January but has offered more consistent cold spells, lots of model disagreement this winter but most of the time whilst not verifying megacold have verified cold instead of mild, i think the last week of February was looking mild and SW'ly just ten days ago which isn't the case now.

Shows you not to always back the mild formhorse like so many still do, one or two more surprises with winter before mid April i feel.

  4. but a brisk easterly wind, low dewpoints and some hard frosts is welcome to me for suregood.gif . Great weather pattern and so much better than the interminable atlantic driven wet weather we have seen for so long (irrespective of whatever track the jet stream has taken)smile.png

Great to see someone see what the charts are actually showing, nice cool cold snap end of the week with -4C at night 3C by day typically.

  5. Chilly start with fog now clearing to allow sunny breaks, hardly the cool cloudy weather all week some are saying, i expect lots of sunshine from wednesday for us west midlanders with even clearer skies than today with harsh morning frosts, lovely weather, can't understand the gloom at all, i guess they really want 14C and dark/gloomy weather and damp conditions.

  6. Yes gavin you are right, i just want some prolonged dry weather as like you say unsettled periods are no good for country walking, the reason i favour cold and dry is because the countryside is still very very muddy and until the sun really increases in strength that is the best way to help me on my country walks with firm underfoot conditions after harsh night frost, GFS 06Z ensembles were probably too late for this update, GFS 00Z ensembles were similar for early March though and i didnt see the ensembles for yesterday so maybe they showed mild wet sw'lys too, sounds like you arent that into unsettled weather even if mild.

  7. I'm hoping for a cold March and April dominated by drying dry arctic northerly/northwesterly winds followed by a HP dominated May but not too warm for walking in the countryside, cold weather doesn't feel that cold with sunshine by April anyway, polar maritime WNW'lys can feel very pleasant indeed like today with lots of nice sunshine.

  8. Fantastic cold spell for us west midlanders, a real wintry scene outside with more light snow falling and feeling very cold indeed, no thaw here for the foreseeable future, its entertaining to read the northerners moaning and SE'ners about a slight thaw tomorrow, no problems here in central warwickshire smile.png

  9. Environmental agency say the risk of flooding will last until the spring/summer.

What they mean by this is not necessarily we are in for a wet few months, its just the ground is so saturated with water and with evaporation levels low until the spring, the ground will just not dry out, what we desperately need is a prolonged cold spell to freeze it until the stronger spring sun comes and helps dry it out, a few days of mild sunny weather in January won't help much at all.

  10. Yes Jan 2010 was very cold but i think January 1987 was even colder and January 1979 the last January below 0C, with Dec 2010 being below 0C it would be even better to have Dec's 2010 synoptics occur in January when the seas surrounding us are colder and europe colder, it will be very difficult to achieve though as January can be the stormiest month of the year.

I think you mean the winter of 2009/10 which was the 8th coldest since 1900 so i assume you are going for this winter to be similar to that one in coldness, ok that would do me but i hope for something even colder if possible :)

  11. Excellent thread and very interesting to read, looks very promising regarding our winter prospects and it looks like January could well be the coldest month of the winter.

Can the experts give their opinion on the odds on the possibility of January being the coldest January since 1979/1987?....and what are our chances of a severe winter with all three winter months cold to very cold this winter or in winters in the near future?, something we haven't seen since 1962/63 though 1978/79 was a severe winter December 1978 wasn't cold.
