After Gavin aka Summer Sun was caught at work smashing his old late 90's style desktop, footage has emerged of him smashing his new laptop after seeing tonights UKMO.

Maybe boring to you conor but after all the rain this autumn a prolonged cold anticyclonic spell is just what we need, nice to be able to enjoy the countryside without worrying about lots of surface water and calm late autumn brings fantastic looking scenes, today had this lovely golden autumn feel especially early morning.

Yes and 5C/6C is still below average for November and with heavy precipitation it will feel very raw indeed with temps dropping especially on high ground where a dusting can't be ruled out, snowfall and snow lying is not that common to low levels in November.
-
It is a shame it's just two months too early to give what would be a memorable cold spell should it of evolved as shown then.
I think you mean one month too early Gibby unless you are saying there is absolutely no chance of memorable cold spells until mid January, well I think December 2010 and many other cold spells where the coldest temps on record for the UK are recorded in late December disprove your point big time, second half of December can be very cold indeed as nights are at their longest/sun power weakest and the continent starting to get very cold.
-
I already sense despondency in model discussion coming up after a warm autumn any kind of cold should be more than good enough for now, some it seems are expecting a snow Armageddon or something in November

Just a part of the natural variation of the earth's climate, be hearing of global cooling by later in the century.

Best 2 months of the year, Nov and Dec. The long nights, increasingly colder outlook and festivities all add up to make it so atmospheric.
What about January, still a month with long nights slightly more than most of November and temps potentially at their coldest and with the best chance of lying snow.

Yes Ian the lack of air frosts does suck BIG time, the pattern we are in is horrendous with rain frequency really high and starting to make it unpleasant underfoot in the countryside, we really need a run of hard frosts to make it useable again, I guess the mildles are happy though even if their is structural damage, ALIWBM.
Your last paragraph was abit strange though Ian, the rest was good though

One of the most depressing months I can remember. Any sun seems to only be late morning or afternoon and there's been little of that - less than 50 hours up to the 20th (~ 70% of average) with just 2 days managing 6 hours. Almost every single night has seen 100% cloud cover leading to horrendously gloomy and dark starts to the day.Rainfall way above average - about 120% at the moment - and even when it's not raining it feels damp and unpleasant.Only minima have been mild here with a 2C positive anomaly. Maxima have been almost bang on average so far and that's only due to the warm spell from 4th to 8th as the vast majority of days have been below average. Just 3 days between the 9th and 20th reached the average max of 12C and in all cases only just. More cloudy non-descript dross today and getting dark already under heavy overcast.A truly awful month
Can't disagree with you on that, down here has been probably even worse than where you are, at least in NE Scotland you get some fresher sunnier airmasses from time to time, here they are like extinct.
Some people will tell you and you know who they are that its been a good month, delusional lot.

if the bbc weather forecast is to be believed horrible conditions for rush hour here.
Good hopefully bottesford will get a good soaking

Just looked out my front door and guess what, yes more rainfall, geez this is getting boring, great weather for snails.
-
Odds firmly on an above average month and well above average at that.
Personally speaking I am not enjoying this month weatherwise - aistream between west and south east has dominated and looks set to dominate, hence the mild temperatures.
Seems like it's just the two of this Damian, its an absolutely dreadful month here with very limited sunshine amounts, the mildies are trying to convince everyone that a June which recorded 193 hours sunshine in England & Wales with just over half the average rainfall is worse than a very cloudy October with high cloud amounts and rainfall frequency.
Its quite amusing the lengths they goto bending the stats around to fit their agenda.

What a complete waste of time these long nights are with hardly any temperature deviation, this weather isn't interesting at all, what is interesting is temperature differences in different locations from night and day, not uniform temperatures across the country that hardly change by night and day, mins of 11C are pathetic for this late in October and its not nonsense to say May felt alot colder this year, I think early to mid autumn is one of the worst times of year now.
Lets all hope the weather picks up, the conditions are horrendous for country walking, people who sit indoors all day might like it but not active people who like to get out and about without having to worry what to wear.

The first half of it yes but I think we may hit a purple patch in late jan and have a stonking Feb, really not sure but if you forced me to make a prediction that would be it, I still think at some stage before xmas we will get a cold snap of some description, we need the compositing site back on so the boys on the strat thread can build their analogues.
Or hit a purple patch in late March and have a stonking April, just by then HLB is slightly too late

Na the only thing for the foreseeable future i'll be doing is taking daily cold showers to cool down after a brisk walk, plenty of sweat and rain on the brow
Felt incredibly mild this afternoon, temp only said 15C but it felt alot warmer of course that is after a nice brisk walk.

Nothing scientific here but is anybody else starting to get a really bad feeling about the upcoming winter?
I know its still very early days but i'm just getting the feeling its going to be an atlantic steamroller fest with just occasional ridges of HP/ Toppling Northerlies if we are lucky, I also think next summer is going to be very warm indeed, I think after a colder period we are entering another warm phase, I know Ian Brown will definitely agree with me but does anyone else

LOL your views aren't proving popular Bottesford, you seem to have a real obsession with our time, you aren't going to manufacture any extra light for you from this time of year whatever you do with the clocks, enjoy cold dark Berlin from November

No need for heating at all or any air con/fans unlike most of the summer and the autumn so far, will save me a fortune this pleasant weather, some of you act like its the next ice age or something, really wish you could experience a true little ice age, it would sort the men from the boys

Glorious blue sky and sun shining, however the wind is fair chilly
Sounds very promising for down here later tonight/tomorrow once this slow moving cold front clears the south, fantastic photo Northernlights, beats this grey slate of a sky that's for sure.
-
Some lovely mild moist ESE'ly winds looking likely next week after the cold plunge later this week, great for bottesford and co

Most of the winter of 1946/47 would of been a waste of time to some members

Cold Easterlies are much more likely mid February onwards than in December/January which are usually stormy, complete waste of time then
-
Ironically today is the brightest it's been all week, slightly fresher last night with a low of 12.5c.
As you can see, there's actually a few dots of blue in the sheet
Yeah you need a magnifying glass to see them

LOL I love how so many mention Jan onwards yet forget December is potentially a classic month for severe cold especially the second half, check out when most of the UK's very coldest nights were recorded
