I am starting to get a bit sick and tired of the snow now. When you first get it it's great. It's nice and powdery, I get a snow day or two, but after a few days it gets boring if it isn't topped up properly. It goes wet, slushy and the paths are cleared at school... Let's have one last dumping before we watch it all melt away though!
We will likely be on the very edge of the band, so we may get some brief heavy stuff before it moves away and/or dies out. I think an inch or two is the most likely at this stage
It is an extremely fine line between getting naff all and a right dumping. We could get a lot of snow, but I haven't been impressed by the GFS PPN predictions lately I have to say. Will keep an eye on the NMM.
That hits the nail on the head. I get sick of the mentality of "well back in the 60s we only had the day off school if we had 14 feet of snow and lost a leg to frostbite" etc. It is 2010, we are in a health and safety culture whether we like it or not, we shouldn't look to 50 years ago to see how we should cope - things have changed massively since then. Most roads were completely gridlocked this morning, that wouldn't have happened in the 60s - why? We have more cars now! All the teachers make an effort to get in, unfortunately due to the road coniditions they (and us) cannot get in on occasion.
That was Saturday, when the snow was dry and the roads were gritted and clear. This morning is a completely different story. My road is on a hill, and only 4x4s have been able to get up. The partially melted snow has frozen overnight on many major roads as there is very limited gritting. It was absolute chaos this morning. And I don't actually live in Cannock itself, I live in a village 4 miles away.
I can't believe school is open this morning. Went in to collect my mark for registration (don't have any morning lessons on a Monday), and the roads are absolutely atrocious. Sheet ice on many main roads - and we have actually had another inch of snow. It is dreadful out there.
Had a bit of snow last night, patched up some of the gaps but nothing more than that. All it does now is ensure my driving test tomorrow is certainly cancelled!
I do know what you mean. I wouldn't mind a high pressure dominated spell, where we get sunny days and frosty nights. But I am sorry about the following chart...
Sorry about this AJ, but the cold is back

I don't think there is any sign that we will get to average, let alone above.
I think as far as snow is concerned, for the most part this cold spell is now over. I am impressed with the temperatures and the quality of snow (perhaps not so impressed with the depth of it though) achieved these past 2 weeks. So far this month my average temperature is -2.9c - that just illustrates how cold it has been. Even though today has seen a thaw, I haven't actually hit 1c, and I don't think 3c will be breached throughout this week.
It really is an excellent tool. For £3.49 per month it's a steal! A million miles better than the Met Office free one. It is also very useful for summer storms.
As I have said many times today, it is not the precipitation that is the primary concern, it is the temperatures and dew points, which are fine for falling snowfall, but for settling snow it is ultra-marginal, with only high ground getting it.
Here I am moaning about the heat, when I am going to Florida in July  At least they have air conditioning I guess, and whopping storms! Back to the Midlands cold spell discussion...still snowing on and off here and still nothing settling, this has to be the most snow I have ever seen fall without ANY settling. Golfstar71 - 0.3c and -0.8c respectively.
