  1. STILL no official figure. This is getting silly now!
  2. Now that is something I agree with. The orientation of the BBC maps are unfair, giving London a better viewpoint whilst shoving Scotland into insignificance. I think that you should have your own BBC News and forecasts but not your own Met Office.
  3. Do only Welsh taxpayers actually pay for the costs of getting everything translated? If so then it wouldn't be half bad but somehow I doubt thats the case...
  4. Yes but doesn't virtually everybody in Wales speak English? Therefore having a Welsh translation would be unnecessary. More people speak English and Welsh than just Welsh. I think Staffordshire should have it's own Met Office...
  5. The last morsels of snow in my garden melted yesterday, making that 14 days with snow on the ground! Next doors snowman still exists, but you can't really count that! Haven't seen many daffodils out at the moment...this time last year they were in full bloom! Says a lot about how normal this winter has been.
  6. I just think its daft that we have had a winter that is a million times better than the majority of the past 20 years and people are STILL moaning. Someone mentioned this above, if this was a 2006/07 repeat then heaven help us... This winter I have seen nearly a foot of snow in SOMERSET, had a low temperature of -9c, several ice days and 2 weeks with snow on the ground. What a rubbish winter
  7. Well not really. The South isn't as cold as the North generally, so we are not used to the snow that you get every winter. After all, we are "softie southerners"!
  8. To be honest I couldn't give a damn about synoptics if we got the snow - which we did! A good winter in my opinion.
  9. I think some northerners need lessons in the climate of the south! I don't know if you have noticed, but a foot of snow is pretty unusual down here, and in London it is very rare indeed, especially in the past 20 years.
  10. With the amount of junk circling our planet I am really not surprised. We cannot keep chucking up satellites, there simply isn't enough room. I saw on BBC news the other day an animation of all the man made objects circling the earth, it is staggering.
  11. Exactly John. It's like some people on here are blaming southerners for the so called "Met Office bias". Moaning at us won't do a thing, if you want a Scottish Met Office, campaign for one. We don't particularly care, doesn't affect us either way!
  12. But the Met Office don't issue flood warnings.
  13. Just jealousy because we got more snow
  14. Well I have seen lots of snow forecast for the North on the BBC in recent weeks. And about people making points that snow in the north never gets a mention in the media, well the north getting snow isn't really news now is it? The south east getting a foot and Devon getting nearly 2 feet - now that's news.
  15. There is a southern bias in the media, I completely agree about that. But southern bias in the Met Office - I need more convincing.
  16. Well I have said this before and I will say it a million times. Let's say London and a part of Scotland both get a foot of snow. In London there will be massive disruption, so there is a huge need for a warning as there are millions of people living in that area WHO ARE NOT USED TO IT. In most areas of Scotland, they are relatively used to snow and there are relatively few people - I am not saying that a warning isn't warranted, but IF there is a southern bias in terms of snow warnings, then I can see why. And to be honest if anything Scotland gets far more warnings for snow than anywhere else - as TEITS points out. But I think the main problem is that some people on here are just going way OTT with the southern bias issue. Back on topic, and if the Scottish people want their own Met Office, fine - but they can pay for it themselves!
  17. Perhaps because Ireland is a completely different country! England and Scotland are part of the UK, Ireland are not.
  18. Yeah, half way through February and still no January CET! Strange...
  19. Yeah for the North it hasn't been that spectacular - YET! Still plenty of time to go. In comparison to the dross of the last 2 winters, this winter has been fantastic and a breath of fresh air.
  20. Nah, waste of money. The current UK one is fine as it is.
  21. Fully agreed Andy. I am sick of reading "Oh this is nothing compared to 78/79, 63 or 47". Of course it isn't, the chances of those happening again are slim. The bottom line is that a large proportion of the country has had it's best snowfall for the best part of 20 years. It is the coldest winter for over a decade. And most of the younger generation (me included) have seen their best snowfalls in their lifetimes. Okehampton got 55cm (almost 2 feet!!) if you don't think that is notable, then you are living in the wrong country. If this time last year we would have said that this was to come, people would have jumped at the chance. It has been the best snowy spell since the internet age and we may not see its like for a few years. Plus (as you mention) we still have about 2 months of snow potential. And towards the back end of February, heavy, convective snow is more likely, which can be exciting to watch. 2008/09 is one to remember IMO.
  22. My sum up: 01/02: Snowed all afternoon, got a good dusting. 02/02: Snowed heavily overnight and continued to do so in the morning. My trip to Somerset went ahead, snowed most of the journey towards Bristol and then it cleared up. A dusting on Exmoor where I was staying. 03/02: Woke up to find a slight dusting, melted quickly though. 04/02: No snow. 05/02: A dusting overnight, started to snow heavily in the evening. 06/02: Deep snow, 8 inches + in places. Nearly had to stay another night. Trees brought down, roads blocked and power cut off. 07/02: Back in Cannock. Snow on the ground, nothing falling. 08/02: Had some snow during the day, but took ages to settle. 09/02: Overhyped snow event didn't materialise, a few hours of wet snow that didn't settle. 10/02: Nothing. 11/02: Surprise snowfall, unfortunately missed most of the heavier stuff. 12/02: A few flakes fell After witnessing one of the best snowfalls in the South West for many years (according to locals), I say this has been a very good cold spell
  23. Great film Stu! One of my big aims in life is to go storm chasing, and this film just strengthened that aim. Loved the part when you were going through the storm in Kansas (I think?) and you couldn't see a thing, the adrenaline rush must have been immense. Stay in touch with the forum!
  24. Watching this now, these guys are insane! Looks exciting though.
