  1. One of the directors at our place has a weather station in Chesham in a notorious frost hollow. It got down to 9.1C and then reached 35.1C during the afternoon. An incredible diurnal range, especially in the summer months.
  2. The ease at which we seem to be recording these extreme temperatures is worrying. Only a matter of time before we hit 40 I think. Easily the worst conditions I've ever had to sleep in for night shifts, utterly grim. Highly doubt it's going to cool down as much as the models suggest tonight. We seem to have flatlined at around 20-21C here under stubborn cloud which is annoying, was hoping it would be nice and cool in my room by the time I get home at about 8am.
  3. It may be partly driven by the UKV which has ramped up maxima for tomorrow in the last 24 hours. Now has grid points of 35C in London for example.
  4. So we get one day of miserable excessive heat and it times it perfectly between me having two night shifts! Can't we just get a prolonged period of mid-20s instead of prolonged crap with one blistering day? Everyone wins then!
  5. Well this is certainly a good day to be at work. Absolutely wretched day out there!
  6. We still get paid at the end of the month though ?
  7. Yes, that's fine for the reservoirs, but the soils were baked dry by May.
  8. Take it back about not feeling warm, I came back from my lunch break walk a bit sweaty! Should have stuck with shorts today.
  9. Yep, 18-20C is widely accepted as being a healthy temperature to set a thermostat too.
  10. Another very usable day down here. Not the warmest but we do have lengthy sunny spells again.
  11. I just love how varied it is at our latitude. I enjoy seeing the days get longer in Jan/Feb, but I also enjoy the descent into Autumn through late August and early September.
  12. One thing I've found interesting about this July so far is how we've managed such suppressed temperatures, even despite sunshine at times. Just looking at the GFS for Sunday and it's got Wales and northern England struggling in the mid-teens despite sunshine!
  13. So what was at one point looking like a nice few days is gradually looking increasingly gloomy. Going to see precious little sunlight over the coming days, and the initial promise of a nice weekend is looking in doubt too!
  14. "Horrific"? Yes it's not the most pleasant but come on, "horrific"? It's a very usable day out there around these parts, and much of the next week is looking decent too. I swear some folks spend so much time complaining how crap the weather is that they don't go out when it's actually nice! The last week or so have been crap, yeah, but let's not be so melodramatic.
  15. Felt more like a pleasant, late September morning this morning. Sunny but not warm at all.
  16. If we end up having an average month in terms of temperature and sunshine amounts (not saying that will happen) and it doesn't feel like it was, perhaps it's expectations that need altering?
  17. If the stats say it ends up being an above average month then it will be an above average month.
  18. Yeah I will say that's one huge benefit of this weather - my flat is a very comfortable temperature.
  19. This is one of the most October-ish weeks of July I can remember. At least next week is looking more pleasant.
  20. Had to wear a proper coat on my lunchbreak today. Even as someone who hates hot weather, this is too chilly for me.
  21. Would prefer something warmer and drier, but this beats the awful heat of last week so won't complain too much.
  22. This is the "storms and convective discussion" thread. A cumulus field very much fits this definition.
