    Last August bank holiday weekend we saw max temperatures of 32-33C each day. This year we'll do well to reach 20!

    With summer now over, I have to say it's been disappointing. Not much usable weather, and when it stopped being unsettled it was revoltingly hot.

    Looking seriously nasty for August. With trees in full leaf, 50-60mph winds could do some serious harm. Serious risk of flooding in Wales too.

    Loving it. Sleeping for night shifts in this is wonderful.

    Into my final hours of a night shift, and it's still completely dark at 4:45am. 2 months ago the sun would have been up. I love how quickly things change at our latitude.

    Approaching the ideal day lengths now. I love the descent into Autumn.

    It's not the fact we are getting more heatwaves that is concerning. It's that we managed to hit 100F out of nowhere. We've hit 100F 3 times in recorded history, and two of those occasions were in the space of little over a year. The ease at which we're hitting excessive temperatures and smashing records is very concerning.

    I think most people would have gladly taken that for most of the summer, as opposed to weeks of "meh" with one week of excessive heat thrown in.

    So much nicer feeling comfortable again! Fingers crossed that's the last of the excessive heat for this year and we can look forward to the Autumn months.

    In fairness, it's no different to people moaning because it's cloudy for a few days in July. This thread is literally titled "moans" so people are free to moan about anything they like in here weather-wise! We had people in here consistently bleating in the SE, despite the stats showing that in terms of sunshine it was a normal summer month in the SE! Although those further north had every right to be annoyed for sure.

    The updrafts are very, very strong. It's just such a shame there's virtually no shear to ramp up any storms and keep them going for longer.

    Better than UKV! For example, it got the storms over Wales and the Midlands the last couple of nights spot on. It also had sporadic isolated storms in central-southern England yesterday. It's tricky to make a comparison as the UKV is a mesoscale model while the EC is a global model, but even so it has done reasonably well.

    Hence the word "most" in my original post. I really don't see the issue?

    Yep, it's been dreadful. EC generally much better. UKV has been very poor with convection all summer. Earlier in the season it was going totally overboard with any event, even being wrong at T+0!

    Let's not speculate on an event where we have no idea what has caused it eh? Regardless, most UK storms are tame and do no harm, so I stand by my point.

    Considering most UK storms have the intensity of a wet fart, I don't think there's much risk! Besides, whatever we hope for, the weather will do what it wants.

    Just starting to notice a bubbling cumulus field on the satellite over London.

    I'm really not comfortable with the idea of seriously suggesting self-medicating with alcohol. Besides, alcohol may help you get to sleep initially, but it causes you to wake up early, and sleep you do get is of poor quality.

    Another far from refreshing morning. We're going to be a nation of sweaty, sleep-deprived zombies by the weekend!

    Yep, if this is going to be the norm for summer then air conditioning is going to be essential. I'm just so glad I'm not on night shifts right now. There needs to be a discussion on how buildings need to be made for the future, we're not built to deal with the worst of summer.

    Oh yeah, me and the rest of normal folk will just go and jump in our pools If you can suggest how to keep cool in a top floor flat, with no outdoor space, no air conditioning and just a fan to keep cool, I'm all ears. Ps. I don't have a pool. Nor do the vast majority of people.

    I would pay good money to swap weather with the fine folk north of the wall. I like being able to sleep!
