  1. Strangely, I had one of the worst chest infections I've ever had over Christmas. Completely ruined the festive period for me.
  2. Apparently roads are running freely in and out of the "quarantined" regions too. It seems that the Italian version of a quarantine is very different to elsewhere.
  3. So today's COBRA meeting will consider options. I fully expect a further meeting in a few days to consider the considerations. Then a final meeting to implement watered down versions of the considerations.
  4. ...and it would still be dark at 9am in December, no thanks.
  5. From the sounds of it, the Italian "quarantine zones" are anything but quarantined.
  6. Yep. You also only need to see the number of people who ignored road closure signs during the floods to realise that a lot of people we co-exist with are brainless.
  7. Probably the worst winter I've ever endured. Although I was away for the sole snow event down here. Just a non-descript, depressing mushfest.
  8. Yep, it's been a pain in the backside. Walking anywhere is often triple unpleasant this season: It's mild, drizzly and windy most of the time. Today is a perfect example.
  9. Off on a road trip around the North Coast 500 in NW Scotland next week. Desperately hoping I can muster a few snowflakes on the mountain roads up there.
  10. Pretty much calm now. But what a cracking day of weather, easily the weather highlight of this wretched winter.
  11. I don't think that comparison is at all fair. Bungee jumping and sky diving is done under far more controlled conditions with risk assessments performed. I'd argue the chances of being killed by either of those are miniscule in comparison to going out in the sea in Force 11 winds and then expecting the emergency services to bail you out. Seeking adrenaline is one thing. Being a pillock is another.
  12. A surfer missing in Sussex has been found alive. Great. Now they can send the moron a bill for the callout for his stupidity.
  13. Loads of trees coming down around here... Yet it barely warranted an amber warning of course
  14. That's the fella that'll bring the worst gusts as it moves southeast. Needs to be watched.
  15. Will be like playing with one of those plastic footballs you used to use as a kid...
  16. Not seeing anything to suggest any changes. The worst of the winds across southern Britain will likely be later this afternoon with a squall line expected to move through. Expecting sporadic 70-75mph gusts inland between 15:00 and 18:00.
  17. Sadly not got much time to grab anything at the moment (have to put watermarks and copyright stuff on them). On shift this morning and roads forecasting is a pig with the sleety/snowy mess in the north later tonight Although the fir trees surrounding our office are starting to concern me...
  18. Widespread obs of 60+ gusts even inland and we're well off the worst of it yet. UKV has moved significantly towards the EC wind gusts (i.e. increased them) this morning. The EC has widespread 70-75mph gusts this afternoon and even hinting at 80s even inland.
  19. The model consistency with this has been impressive.
  20. Finally. Although what the hell they're playing at not including the Central Belt of Scotland I have no idea. Could be 70-80mph gusts through heavily populated areas.
  21. There will be gusts of around or above 70 in the Midlands. The Met Office need to be hammering this home but aren't! Hearing that a widespread amber warning will be issued tomorrow. Better late than never eh? I don't like to criticise fellow forecasters, but the Met Office really don't help themselves at times.
  22. Yep, this is the point I've been making all day. There is no logic behind only having that select area with the amber warning. I just cannot see the reasoning behind it.
  23. No worries. The ECMWF can overegg winds by 5mph or so, but even taking that into account it's still potentially damaging on Sunday. The UKV gusts will be very interesting viewing tomorrow.
