  1. Near miss on the frost front last night. Down to 1C for a couple of hours this morning. Just heard the first cuckoo!
  2. Nice view of the Space Station about 10minutes ago. Next opportunity is 9.30 tomorrow evening.
  3. All tadpoles now hatched. Had a heron down yesterday — ate a lovely adult great crested newt and another smaller newt:-( After than I shooed it away!
  4. There will be talk of a drought soon. Even the ensembles have "dried up" today!
  5. Still a 404 here at 1600 hours.Air pollution seems high — very hazy and nasty stale air. I live in the country too, so I am wondering what it must be like in the cities with the extra traffic.
  6. Does anyone know which pollutants in particular we are breathing in?
  7. Forecast a 10 for Wednesday. I have rarely seen the pollution forecast go above a 4 for this location.
  8. We have clouds of pollen in the air here — it's like a mist coming from the tress. Amazing, I've never seen it before.
  9. Ensembles seem to think things might warm up — throughout the UK too.
  10. Ice on the pond this morning, and a chilly -5.6C. It would have been very cold if it had been January.
  11. Ensembles are looking a bit wet, especially the further north you are.
  12. I find it very striking how the frogs are not put off by cold weather. Maybe once they are ready to spawn, they just have to do it and there is no turning back?
  13. Even if you have no luck this year, if you can repair your pond, the frogs will come back. As before, you can always introduce some spawn from elsewhere. Pity about the neighbours.
  14. Spawning finished here too. Looks like about 30 clumps, but there could be more among the weeds.
  15. Frosty here this morning, but blue skies and no wind, so I'm not complaining. I am concerned about my tomatoes which I have in the polytunnel to harden off — bit scared to go and look.
  16. Spawning picking up well now. Mid 20s clumps of spawn. Saw a very large crested newt (I think) in the pond the other evening — huge compared with all the others — it must have been 18-20cm long and very thick. Most of the other newts (mainly palmates) are cute and small.
  17. If you leave it something will benefit from it by eating it, if you move it, it may hatch successfully, and then something will benefit from eating most of the tadpoles. Hobson's choice really.
  18. At least winter 2014-15 can't be any worse than this one (or can it)? Encouraging to see that some basic building blocks will be in the right place next winter.
  19. Lucky you! We have just 12 blobs of spawn, so running well short of last years' total of 38! Three newts having a munch this morning.
  20. Another frosty and foggy morning. Brightness already starting to appear at 8am, so I am hoping it will clear earlier today. Top temp yesterday was 14.2C, so pretty good.
  21. Yay, the fog has cleared and the sun is out. Skies still a bit milky, but it looks like it's going to be a lovely afternoon.
  22. Fog seems to have got worse here — looked brighter 30 minutes ago when you could see the blue hue immediately overhead. So close, yet so far away ...
  23. Frosty and foggy this morning. Hopefully today it will clear. Yesterday it finally cleared just as the sun went down — maxed out at a chilly 6.8C!
  24. Dry and sunny with temperatures between 21-24C and a gentle breeze; occasional rainy day, say 1 per week, just to keep the garden watered.
