All tadpoles now hatched. Had a heron down yesterday — ate a lovely adult great crested newt and another smaller newt:-( After than I shooed it away!
Still a 404 here at 1600 hours.Air pollution seems high — very hazy and nasty stale air. I live in the country too, so I am wondering what it must be like in the cities with the extra traffic.
I find it very striking how the frogs are not put off by cold weather. Maybe once they are ready to spawn, they just have to do it and there is no turning back?
Even if you have no luck this year, if you can repair your pond, the frogs will come back. As before, you can always introduce some spawn from elsewhere. Pity about the neighbours.
Frosty here this morning, but blue skies and no wind, so I'm not complaining. I am concerned about my tomatoes which I have in the polytunnel to harden off — bit scared to go and look.
Spawning picking up well now. Mid 20s clumps of spawn. Saw a very large crested newt (I think) in the pond the other evening — huge compared with all the others — it must have been 18-20cm long and very thick. Most of the other newts (mainly palmates) are cute and small.
If you leave it something will benefit from it by eating it, if you move it, it may hatch successfully, and then something will benefit from eating most of the tadpoles. Hobson's choice really.
At least winter 2014-15 can't be any worse than this one (or can it)? Encouraging to see that some basic building blocks will be in the right place next winter.
Another frosty and foggy morning. Brightness already starting to appear at 8am, so I am hoping it will clear earlier today. Top temp yesterday was 14.2C, so pretty good.
Fog seems to have got worse here — looked brighter 30 minutes ago when you could see the blue hue immediately overhead. So close, yet so far away ...
