  1. A few questions. Part of my research for the alternative forecast this year was finding average SST's throughout the last 38 years and comparing them to the SST's we have seen this year to give an idea to what extent sea temperatures will have on our winter climate for 2008/09. Now I have found that in our general area sea temperatures are below average for this time of year by nearly 2degrees. Is this a result of Larger arctic ice extent or is the Arctic ice extent a result of this? We all know temperatures remain cold enough for the Arctic ice to remain during summer months (apart from a receeding large chunk), but if Sea temperatures rose and air temperature did not what would be the winning factor determining its existence? What Iam trying to say really, is the Earth warming or is the oceans movement somehow making arctic waters slightly warmer, warm enough to melt ice quicker? Probably a silly question but I just thought I'd ask......only starting to read into the Arctic ice out of interest.
  2. Nice work, I hope its not going to be as cold as you say, my house is already feeling like its made of ice.
  3. I have barely seen a spark of a firework this halloween but least Im getting my own little virtual show. Great pictures.
  4. I seen this little bugger on the Near Earth Objects webiste, at 0.08 Lunar distance from earth it must have been pulled by gravity towards us to collide. It never mentioned a collision but I new by the distance from earth that it would impact.
  5. Fairly sharp hail shower here, cloud has been spilling in from the Irish sea since early evening, not the low cloud I was expecting but rather some small cumulonimbus.
  6. Overcast with showery outbreaks of Sleet here, some short snow outbursts but then returning to sleet.
  7. Yes I happened to be viewing these cams as snow fell, the flakes coated the cam a bit on the bottom 2 cams on the site. It was around 11:30am it fell.
  8. Like I said before, they'll play it safe and dabble around the average no matter what Indications are tossed their way. But what can we expect, there is no mission of any kind of severe cold or warmth being predicted from this far out. We all know that anything can happen in the next 2 months so don't lose faith no matter what prospects you wished for.
  9. I thought it would be a good idea to get the learners involved in writing up a forecast for forthcoming days, would be interesting to see how well it compares to the professionals. So everyone, have a go yourself at the forecasts and lets see if you have what it takes. P.S No crystal balls allowed. If you are wanting to look at the charts you can find the datacentre and enembles under FREE in the top bar of the site.
  10. I had a weatherstick, basically it pointed upwards when dry and downwards when wet...I was only 10 or 11 at the time but it was pretty cool little instrument.
  11. Catching the beast? I don't know....me and my friend just call it "Overshooting the top" lol
  12. I was sipping away at a soda drink just 2 days ago and the fella I was working with pointed this out to me.....its very worrying.
  13. I read somewhere that some places in Australia seen 50c this week and its only spring...if thats true its monstrous.
  14. Well what i read i suppose stated them as particles, I guess I meant new particles.......I cant really tell the difference apart from I know I can't see them naturally lol. I just knew they would create something new because I remember making a joke that they might block their tunnel with new matter. I'd like to think there is a possibility of a new fuel/energy source from this experiment, I mean the collision does create a heat (apparently) 100,000 x greater than the centre of the sun....so obviously there must be a humungous amount of energy to create that heat. I think opening a new dimension would be amazing, or a wormhole through space. It'd be like Stargate lol.
  15. I do yes, albeit a bit shabby from being in the closet for a while, I shall dust the cobwebs off and flood back the memories.
  16. I see your point PP, I don't like anything that creates havoc amongst our Natural planet and our humanlife either. It may take large amounts of energy to run this project, but with the data collected, the new atoms that will be created and of course with the best minds in the business operating it I think a new energy source will be created from this, something cleaner, recyclable and safe. Imagine the energys produced by a big bang and being able to harness this energy safely. Its all for a better cause, and a cause I think that will make the moon landing seem futile in comparison. Everything we know as it is will change, its only a matter of time. Space travel will change, Energy sources will change, Theories will change (although be it to more theories), introduction of new materials that we have never seen before......we will all look back (just as Im sure people did during early space exploration days) and wonder why we got so uptight over this. I think you should also know that CERN are donating money to charitys with publicity over the LHC. Honestly with the money that already goes to poor countries and the donations already sent not much impact has been made, but this is not the fault of not giving enough, this is usually the cause of those running the country in question, for instance African countries as we have seen recently are run by a greedy, selfish bunch of tossups and THEY are the cause of their own countries problems.
  17. The simplicity of their forecasts are mainly for the public eye, I don't think the 90% of the public would understand a more complex forecast discussion. In my idea they are correct about their use of the word "Hot", 5c+ above average or when the feel of the sun is hot (not the air temperature), so obviously in Summer it'd be 25c or above, in winter hot would be around 18c or above. Im sure if you had informed them of your meterological research and hobby they would have explained in a broader manner. To them you are just an ordinary member of the public.
  18. I actually find most peoples reactions out of order, mostly devout Christians have started these rumours, so afraid that their way of living and thinking will be proven wrong and christianity will become non-existent....(in other words they will lose out financially). Ive seen alot of people slagging these scientists off too, mostly on American sites. It makes me laugh, everything we use in our day to day lives was at one point an experiment, the tv, radio, microwave, washing machine, planes, cars, everything electrical. How can people have so much disrespect and negativety for the very things that make our world the way it is today? I actually seen one guy calling them Nerds who've no life and haven't seen a woman naked, saying they have no family, no woman in their life to lose......its ridiculous. What is the experiment for? Well obviously its going to answer questions to the birth of the universe, we will find new kinds of material and matter, even ones that have not been seen since the birth of the universe. I also reckon other things will arise from this....new ways of travel, new energy production, new natural raw materials. Its not only worth the £5billion, its an amazing spectacle and the dawn of a new era. If people think its a waste of money think again....imagine how much it cost America to invade Iraq, to build a nuclear bomb, to pay goverment wages, to bail certain companies out of bankruptcy.........£5billion is just a needle in a world sized haystack. Not the end of the world, but a new beginning.....who knows, maybe this New World predicted by Nostradamus and Mayens is actually true....the beginning of a very large change to humankind.
  19. One of my recent ones....only started to divulge in cloud photography. Some of your guys pics are amazing.
  20. UK Outlook for Monday 8 Sep 2008 to Wednesday 17 Sep 2008: After a chilly start to the week many areas will have a dry and bright day on Monday with sunny spells, although eastern areas will also have a few showers. Tuesday and Wednesday both look set to be mainly dry with sunny spells but later in the week conditions are likely to become more unsettled and windy from the west, with outbreaks of locally heavy rain spreading to many areas. There is also a risk of thunderstorms. The temperature during the week will be mainly warmer than average for the time of year. Then during the weekend and into the following week there is no particularly strong signal for any notable weather events to occur. Some rain or showers are likely, along with some dry and bright spells. Updated: 1305 on Wed 3 Sep 2008 With that start to Autumn forecast I see no reason to complain, more Thunderstorm activity than the whole summer had to offer.
  21. Definitely not here, Ive only heard a couple rumbles this year. I'd say the further Southeast you go, also any mountainous or hilly areas.
  22. I hate it when they spoil my fishing trip, you reel one in and it gets stole by the flying monstrosity. Okay they are a nuisance, but what would happen if the seagulls vanished?....how would it affect us as humans?
  23. Basically it can be done in 2 ways, taking a video then pausing/stopping it during the lightning bolt and saving the picture. Secondly (and the most professional way) is to use shutter speed, this basically takes the picture over a certain amount of time, say for instance 5 seconds. Basically anything within the picture during the 5 seconds is included, though this can be disrupted if the angle of the camera is moved or anything gets infront of the camera that shouldn't be. Nice pics AJPoolshark. P.S, 9ball race to 10 for a Score note?
