1. You really do need to put your thermometer in a better location you know, that's way off.
2. Well it was nice while it lasted - didn't expect any at all when I got up this morning so every millimetre is a bonus.
3. I'll keep everything crossed. Tell me about it. And if the south east had had the cold and snow that Scotland have recently endured it would be flamin' Armageddon.
4. Very light now, the bulk of it is now leaving the Carmarthen area and even though there's a bit more heading our way on the radar I think that's it for the heavier stuff. Nice though, if only 1cm on all surfaces.
5. A bit heavier now, larger flakes, about 1cm lying now. From the radar it looks like it'll stop soon, but might get some more an hour or so later.
6. Snowing steadily again near Carmarthen. Also known as Lake Effect snow (when a lake is the source of moisture as opposed to the sea). Best explained on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake-effect_snow
7. Eased off here now, light dusting, looks like another shower on the way.
8. Yes, it's pepping up in places. Looks like I may get a tad more than a dusting if all goes well.
9. Settling here too, don't think we're going to get a huge amount from looking at the radar just perhaps a dusting.
10. Looks like you may get something within an hour or so. Good luck .......... http://meteox.com/gmapstatic.aspx?zoom=6&type=zoom&x=159&y=216
11. Streamer moving southwards across the west side of Wales right now: http://meteox.com/gmapstatic.aspx?zoom=6&type=zoom&x=155&y=205
12. I'm surprised that you got as high as 6.5C. Here near Carmarthen I'm currently on my 'highest' of -2C
13. Bloody hell, how did my post become so mangled? Oh well, here's the short version: I remember that 1978 blizzard VERY well as I lived near Bristol at the time. There's certainly the 'potential' for that to happen again given the current setup, I live in hope. BTW, can you (or someone) remind me of the link to that site with those old synoptics please? I had it book-marked but can't find it any longer. Thanks.
14. Same here - loads of promises but nothing tangible. Bah.
15. With the met office it's a case of "damned if you do, damned if you don't" - what doesn't help are newspapers screaming sensational headlines such as "major freeze-up on the way, -20C" etc But anyhow, back to the weather in Wales - here the temp is crawling up VERY slowly, now at 2.3C (was 1.9C at 9am) and it's piddling down. Northwards moving front is slowing, so should soon stall and return southwards, MAYBE with some snow on the back edge. We'll see.
16. Indeed. The Low becomes reasonably static to the south of Ireland with the centre and assorted fronts slowly meandering around, so I can see why the Met office are putting out warnings. Due to the borderline temps some will be lucky and get a good dump of snow, while others will see wet snow, sleet or rain. Some may even stay dry. The Low eventually moves out of the way on Thursday. In theory.
17.

Large flakes = wet and sticky snow, each large flake really being a number of smaller flakes stuck together.
18.

Best thing to do in such conditions is to look up, not down - far nicer to see snowflakes falling rather than look at the wet ground.
19. A smattering of sleet mixed in with the rain. 3.0 C (dropped from a 'high' of 3.1 C ) 100M ASL South Wales
20. Snow will settle on wet ground if it's cold enough, ie very close to freezing or below. And before anyone tries to tell you that heavy snow will settle on wet ground ..... again, same rule applies. Heavy snow will NOT settle if the temp is too far above freezing. Many times I've seen real heavy snow at a temp of 2, 3 or 4C and it simply won't settle. The temp is the key along with the Dew Point.
21. 2.7C and a mix of sleet and rain. Can't see it lasting much longer here as looking at the radar the back edge of the front isn't that far away and unless the low stalls the rain band isn't going to curl around enough for a second go.
