  1. Do you know if I'm right in saying that the 700hpa Wind Vectors on the radar show the general direction that any ppn is moving? I thought someone said this last winter but I may be wrong.
  2. Looking at the 5 minute radar there's a lot more ppn starting to move up from France which looks like it's coming our way, should make it to North Glos at some point later. Of course what it'll be is anyones guess! Severe frost in Stroud this a.m. still patches of frozen snow away from sun. We've had warmer conditions than this and still ended up with snow! Good luck for later...
  3. Left Stroud to visit parents in Gloucester at 7.00 tonight and was surprised to see the amount of ice on the back roads and pvements in Gloucester. I grew up there and don't remember that much ice that early in the evening in December for many years! I appreciate it's from snow melt, but that fact its there for that reason is also unusual in the so called even larger teapot! It's all going a bit retro with regards to winters eh? Hmmm. Good old global warming.
  4. Just been outside, cold spell has arrived at last! Outside steps at flat front door only normally freeze when very still and frosty, at moment empty plant pots have inch of frozen water in them, and its windy. Not seen that in 6 winters here: frozen water and pretty windy at 10pm. Feels promising of something more? Not been cold like this in December for a few years, bit 80's feeling to me.
  5. Hmmm. My dog has just run round my flat scared and wee'd himself with no reason to - the only times he does this is usually just before thunder storms, or in February this year he did it 5 or 6 hours before we had 4 inches snow. He he lets see what happens. Feel sorry for him (he's ok now..), but hopefully it'll be nappy time for him the next few days....
  6. Interesting cold spell so far... Going only by forecasts: clear skies, cold and frost were coming end of last week, resulting in more serious cold beginning of this week and the prospect of snow (showers or otherwise) around now, with some sustained substantial cold (for December at least), lasting to the weekend and possible beyond. For this area (glos) Well it ain't happened yet!! I've been outside landscaping for the last 10 days (with a weekend break!) and it's been a bit chilly, fairly rainy, not a lot of sun, one frost and fairly cold with rain/mist today. Very typical December really. Yeah models are still suggesting possible severe cold, perhaps 'proper' snow as remembered from my childhood (I'm 33), but frankly if doesn't come soon, over 2 weeks of the predited cold have already past! Bit frustrated really. I know winters not done, but come weather Gods whats going on! Stop teasing the predition models!! Rant over - good luck the SW, reckon we need it.
  7. It's been great in the Stroud District this winter, really since before Christmas. I've worked outside all winter and really been in the thick of it at times. Before Christmas and just after it was very cold on and off, and leaving home at 7.30 most mornings I must of de-iced the car 20 times - more than the last 3 winters put together! The small amount of snow that fell after Christmas (can't remember date) probably an inch, remained on the ground, even in the sun in places, for 4 days. That hasn't happened for years around here. We've had deeper 'back edge' snow in recent years, but usually all gone within 24 hours. The snow that we've had this month has been a real memory trip, taking me back to growing up in the area in the 80's. 3 events in a week, some melt in between but not much at all. In fact me and a mate put a snowman in a small tree in the park on Slad Road in Stroud which lasted 9 days! It was only held in a fork, and was small, so melt was minimal in this time. Paths out of the sun were dangerous for days with compacted snow turning to ice. Today I've been in Chalford near Stroud, and some of the gardens there have 5 inches of level snow still, and some paths dangerous. All in all a classic winter for me so far - interesting this global warming. All the cooler wet weather we got in the summer followed by this...My 'feeling' is that we will get more snow soon, possibly more than we've had but also more short lived. Anyway good luck for those who want more!
  8. Been around and about the higher parts of the Stroud District, above Nailsworth/Horsley area, where there is still 6 inches of lying snow - rapid thaw mind! Need some dry days as I work outside, weekend snow every week from now would be great! Going green in Stroud...
  9. Not sure, but the precip chart tonight has consistantly shown low precip rate here, as is doing now, but it is very heavy! And if the forecasr is same for here, we're only 10 mins away!! Hope its coming your way too..
  10. I'm happy too!! Been working outside all day in heavy rain and cold, very tiring but still up and watching! Looks beautiful outside, best winter week since I was a kid growing up in Gloucester in the eighties. Just looked outside again - well heavy now, depth is increasing nicely
  11. Still not as much snow as the last lot yet here though. Looks like there could be later if it continues for few hours at least. Definately going up to the commons around here tomorrow - little thaw today even after hours of rain, prob much more snow falling there now. Lets hope the ppn peps up some more...
  12. I agree, but won't a NE draw of air bring slightly colder conditions in allowing snow to settle faster as well? It is settling ok here, but it was colder the other night and less heavy snow produced more covering
  13. Not sure if this is right, but it seems to me as the low moves east preciptation will shortly be coming from a NE direction for some time, which boads well for this part of the world? Just going by 5 min precip charts, bit new to all this so may be wrong
  14. Heavy snow here now, settling but not as fast as rate of fall would suggest. Just looked up definition of blizzard: -7c, 56 mph wind and poor visibility. Well got 1 out of 3 here, so heavy snow it is! Not seen it this heavy since the early eighties, hope it doesn't turn to drizzle and go away before sunrise as BBC suggest...
  15. Settling in Stroud - seen from window cars travelling from all directions have inches of fresh snow on them, must be good just outside town.
  16. Finally moderate snow in Stroud - not many miles from Cranham at all! just need a slight drop in temp now for it to settle on wet surfaces...
  17. Unless you live in Stroud, where they STILL hasn't been any snow yet - even though there is 3 inches on my neighbours garden from the other day!
  18. Totaly agree - just heavy sleet in Stroud, no even one burst of snow yet!
  19. You never know - we had 6 hours of heavy rain last year with an hour of snow at the end that left an inch.
  20. Some of the most experienced people on this site are suggesting that the snow event, if there is going to be one, is hours away yet as the coldest air has not reached us yet. The precip charts show preciptation falling as heavy in western Cornwall as here, and it on its way here! It could go on all night, so its not over yet, even though it'll probably be marginal. Good luck!
  21. Very heavy sleety rain in Stroud at the moment, still not shifting lying snow much though! Will post again if it turns to snow.
  22. I remember last year we had 6 hours of heavy rain here, immediately followed by an hour of heavy snow which left an inch or so on all surfaces, so its seems that temperature drop is more important than how wet ground is. Snow here is light then moderate, ocaasionally heavy in bursts - aiding thaw at mo! Looks better higher up though as far as I can tell.
