  1. Tay road bridge closed to everything now. Red warning anyone?

I can not understand why this isn't a red warning at the moment when my mums reporting that trees are coming down which way and every way in Helensburgh. All the windows in my friends office in Belfast have just got blown in and just about every bridge and railway line in the west of Scotland is shut.

  2. Tay bridge now closed to all traffic. Must have hit the 80mph.

Jeez my friend lives in Belfast and she's at work on the 5th floor of one of the buildings in the city center and she just posted on twitter that the winds blown in some of the windows on their call center floor and they are being sent home.

  3. Only cars getting across the Tay bridge now. Gust to 67mph a couple of minutes ago. Might be higher at the bridge where it is more exposed.

    edit. 72mph gust now.

    edit again. 74mph now.

Getting serious now. Last gust 80mph. Bridge will close altogether is they get the same.

Forth Road Bridge shut to everything but cars now. Erskine Bridge has restrictions on it. My mums just called me from Helensburgh to say that it is bad over there, the main street in to town (Sinclair Street) is shut both ways because of fallen trees and that the primary school nearby has been shut because of the danger of falling trees. All ferries are cancelled on the Clyde, train lines between Wemyss Bay and Port Glasgow are closed due to torn over head power cables, line between Lanark and Glasgow Central are closed due to fallen trees blocking the line. Helensburgh & Balloch to Glasgow lines are also shut due to over head power cables being damaged. Not a good day to try and get anywhere. Everything through Partick, so anything on the North Clyde lines is shut due to problems with the cables at Partick. Really bad day to go anywhere.

  4. The weather is being a true Scotsman today. Bright one moment bucketing down the next, April showers at the end of May well better late than never. I just want a warm and dry day - it doesn't even need to be clear - so I can get all the curtains down in the flat and wash them before I go away on holiday. Is that too much to ask?!

  5. m

Windy again today and no showers that I saw landed on the black isle till late afternoon. The fields are drying very quickly in the strong sun and wind. Nettles now up to my er thighs shall we say and bluebells peaking.

Who's going where for a holiday this summer? My lot can't make their minds up even now so I may just do a quick one to Rum for a few days soon...

California for three weeks :yahoo:and I leave three weeks today whoot! Weather here today was...eh well typical Scottish weather started raining as soon as I walked out the blooming hair dressers. Weird though you know, wind was and still is feeling very warm. Its a nice break from the normal bone cutting bitter stuff that normally comes in from the North Sea.

  6. Unbearably humid in Edinburgh its been a long time since I've gone outside and felt the wind this warm. Not to mention its not "nice" outside. At least it doesn't look like its going to rain today so I can put the rest of the washing out. I can't see there being much convective potential around, the air feels too stable.

  7. Temp: 15C

    MSLP: 1011mBar

    24h rainfall: 18mm (YEYEYYEYEYEY)

    Windspeed: 4.3m/s @ 179deg

I must say I'm vastly appalled with the unviersities new weather station! Where is my dewpoint, RH and Solar Flux? Damn you Edinburgh University cutbacks! *shakes fist* While I do not have a number to give any of you I'm going to go with my gut feeling that it is humid as hell here.

  8. Sorry to hear about your friend. So many people have been affected by these storms it's unreal... As a complete weather geek who generally loves severe weather, this whole event leaves me feeling pretty confused. I feel guilty because I was actually looking forward to a bit of virtual chasing yesterday but didn't want to see anything like this :/

I've been ramping up to my trip stateside for the last month or so and now I feel somewhat indifferent about the whole thing. I'm never frightened for my own safety out there but my biggest worry is that I'll come across something like this. I do think stormchasers do a lot of good though so it isn't going to stop me chasing. You never know whether your report might make the difference between people being warned in time or not.

I feel awful just because I was looking forward to a night virtual chasing and then this happened. My best friends girl friend lost her uncle and aunt in the storms. She was telling us how everyone knows someone thats been hit hard, lost their homes or lives. No ones been left untouched by the storms. The one thing that really came across was just the vast scale of what happened and the fact that it wasn't just one storm it was storm after storm after storm with strong tornado after another.

  9. Do you believe in May the circumstances will be more difficult?

I don't think anyone can say what is going to happen next month. It could be completely silent, it could be more of whats happened and everything in between. We struggle to forcast the day of the storms where these things are going to be and how bad never mind next month. I think the thing that really shocks me is the fact that it is so early in the season. Normally (if I've got this right) the stronger tornados tend to be mid season - latter in the season not so much this early on.

  10. Crazy indeed. Just found out my best friends girl friend (who lives in Atlanta) has lost family in the storms. Its kinda makes me feel sick to think I was watching that happen last night and I must say its driven home just what these things can do when you have a large tornado and a populated area. Really was the worst case senario. I hope to never ever see anything like this again in my my life.
