Just a quick mention of the post @Tom Quintavalle has already linked - when @Paul Sherman analysed the 2009 snow streamer and where it went wrong in some parts of the region. I was so impressed by his analysis that as a result I joined in 'properly' on Netweather from then onwards. Also, thank you @Eagle Eye and the follow-up post by @Paul linking the @snowking post (are you still following?!) about the complex relationship between 850 temperatures and ground temperatures at this time of the year when we are seeking cold and snowy outcomes. Snowking, along with Chiono, Nick F and Kold Weather are posters I always watch carefully in terms of their analysis when cold and snow are in the offing; other posters are available... Another beautiful day today, blue skies and a few clouds. Yesterday's clouds had a very 'cold' look about them if you know what I mean, this morning's are fluffier and pinker by comparison. The wild parakeets are extremely busy at the moment as they always are when cold weather arrives.

Consider it done. Another grey and cold day today but I'm happy with that as it feels seasonal, some lovely foggy days last week when we returned from Cyprus. About to catch up on the MAD thread - do I need armour? A question for those that know - at this time of year, how do 850 temps convert to ground level temperatures? It seems a little more complex than adding 10 degrees somehow.

May I ask what do the 850s translate to at ground level at this time of year? I usually add roughly 10 degrees to estimate ground temperatures but am aware it's a little more complex than that. Sorry to ask during such a busy time but it helps with some of the charts.

Huge flash of lightning cracked across the sky here in Surbiton and a rumble followed quite a while later. Rain has cleared through again now.

Rain heavy again but without the crazy winds this time. Looks like the back edge is approaching now and the sun coming out. Edit: And there we have it, the sunset after the storm.

Cuttlefish were washed up all along the beach between Durley Chine and Branksome this morning after the thunder storm in the early hours that was so loud it woke us all up.

Yep, crackling around us as this lot approaches from the south west and south. EDIT: torrential rain and strong winds now arrived. 10 minutes later lightning and impressive thunder rolled over us, as shown in @Mark wheeler post below. Still going as it heads north-east.

It was the morning after the night before at Bournemouth beach this morning. After very loud thunder plus lightning and heavy rain that woke us all up during the night, the shore line was littered with washed-up cuttlefish. Arriving home in Surbiton an hour ago, I went through the 'is that planes I can hear or distant thunder' routine and it's been rumbling around ever since. A big rumble as I type.

Agreed @convector and @Blessed Weather. Our fridge door informed us the outside temperature had risen from 16 to 17 degrees around midnight and I awoke at 3am with the indoor temperature at 70 degrees and no heating. The warmest night for quite some time. A greyish day today, odd bit of blue showing through the clouds and leftovers from the earlier rain on the windows and pavements. Basically an autumn day; loving the trees turning now.

This morning was the first time for months I woke to the sound of persistent heavy rain that didn't just come in fits and starts, it sounded lovely. Of course the kitchen fitters arrived in the rain as a result but it doesn't appear to have held them up ripping the kitchen apart. It's technically a 'refurb' but with half the units down, it sort of feels like a new one is being put in. Fingers crossed that the grass is now returning to green across the whole region; just as our plants are enjoying the rain, the colder nights are rather annoying them!

The squall line just came through here in Surbiton. A short-lived affair but suitably windy with some heavy rain. We had just got back from the lunchtime walk which was refreshing in a damp atmosphere with the warmish air cooled by a strong breeze. Edit: now the squall has gone through, the winds seem much stronger... aaand 15 minutes later, it's all quiet out there!

Hmmm, murky and grey to the west of London all morning, at times the clouds were so dark it looked as if the heavens were about to open. Got off the flight from Cyprus at midnight last night after a week of high 30s and arrived home to a cold house (yes, we put the heating on) and all the plants looking well watered in the garden from last week's rain. Fingers crossed for a good, cosy autumn now.

This morning brought a few rounds of heavy rain and distant rumbles of thunder. As we dodged large puddles on our lunchtime walk, the sun made it feel rather hot and beautiful cloudscapes could be seen to our south, east and west. Here's hoping the sunshine earlier raises our chances of a storm later.

The heavy band of rain this lunchtime skirted our part of Surbiton by a mile at most. Husband got off the train at Surbiton greeted by rain, crossed the road for the bus and everywhere from then on was dry. The clouds to the west looked incredibly dark as they trundled northwards and we could hear distant thunder. Last night's storm delivered torrential rain for a while, incredible lightning directly overhead and some cracking thunder. And then it was gone!

A few pics from last night's storm looking south west from Surbiton just before 1am. It was shortlived in the end, with some squally rain and bright flashes accompanied by a few heavy rolls of thunder lasting around 15 minutes.

Maybe that cell around Haslemere or the stuff approaching from the Isle of Wight? Hope it makes it here, still feels quite warm. Edit: just looked south west out the attic window and saw 2 forks of lightning in the distance.

Had a very light shower earlier and the radar shows precipitation moving north-west of here. Sun back out now with milky skies. As the autumnal feel slowly kicks in, the days are noticeable for how hot it gets when the sun is out but how cool it feels when it's cloudy. A lot of evenings bring beautiful cloudscapes that look as if they could deliver torrential rain but then just thin out and disappear. Loving the cooler nights although early darkness is not my thing.

And we've just had a torrential downpour. Got there in the end!

It has quite literally just been going around us for the past 40 minutes. But there have been 2 rumbles of thunder in the distance.

Well, the clouds are definitely giving it a try here in Surbiton. The sunny spells deliver a lot of heat, breezy when it clouds over. Fingers crossed we all get at least some rain, a good thunderstorm would be fab:) Edit: the radar has sprung into life in the past 20 minutes. Just missing us so far on the sudden line of showers to the north-east.

Great pictures Mark. Indeed, the radar shows lovely looking cells to the north and west of us. Must admit, I stood out in yesterday evening's rain and have enjoyed today's cool down.

Dry here in Surbiton since lunchtime but a good dousing of rain this morning. Took this pic on our evening walk. I would guess it's the cell over approximately the Heathrow area on the radar.

We were watching the clouds this afternoon to the north east from the duckponds park feeling rather envious. Nice to get a few blobs even if, as you say, it doesn't look too dramatic for now. Beggars can't be choosers and whatnot. Edit: Still going quite strongly
