  1. Classic wishbone today by the looks of it with the radar backing up what east coast members are saying.

What little shower activity there is down the western side of the UK is pretty well hugging the coast or heading in land further south than the North West region.

TBH i can't see that changing in a hurry so for much of Northern England especially those of us west of the Pennines it's looking like a cold dry day followed by a damn cold night tonight..

To those towards the east coast, enjoy and hopefully we'll all be joining in with you shortly.

  2. Slight dusting here this morning, Current temp -1.3c Dew point -2.2c Wind chill -1.2c on a N/W, Very clear.

Same here, everything is white but barely measurable in depth.

At least, the last 24 hours have proved snow is possible so a bit more hopeful for Thursday now.

i have a feeling that things could get a little interesting, especially as the initial period of snow is due in daylight hours when more people are about. Some Trans-Pennine roads could become difficult, at least for a few hours.

Beyond that, there are upgrades again this morning for the threatened easterly but whether this turns out to a EA and SE event or whether the more nothern areas get an invite only time will tell.

Anyway i've got a few days off now so between Christmas shopping expeditions I may get a bit of winter walking in.

  3. Just to following on from Iand61, that sleetyness has now turned to big snow flakes. No chance of any settling, but better than rain!!

Is that officially Bacup's first snow of year then Shadowfax.

If so it's been along time coming but hopefully it's the first of many falls this winter.

Raining where I am but a lot lower ASL

  4. Some quite heavy showers here overnight and still going on now.

A bit of sleetyness within them but not amounting to anything and with a current temperature of 2.8c I can't see that changing.

Things lare possibly looking a little more hopeful for later today and on Thursday but I still feel that the coming days are going to be more wet than white, certainly this side of the Pennines.

  5. temperatures definately on the rise here.

It was 0.1C when I came in at 5.40pm but is now at 0.6C.

Personally I can't see much of a snow event for this side of the Pennines tonight although if it all ends as wet slush I'd sooner miss out in it.

Hopefully better chances will arrive later in the week but ATM and certainly for the North West it seems like a constant, close but no cigar situation.

  6. Quite an obvious bank of cloud to our SW now which ties in the the shower activity showing on the radar.

How far away the cloud is though is difficult to judge due to high moorland partially blocking our view in that direction.

Some lovely colouring in that cloud, the type of oranges and steel greys that only seem to show when the conditions are very cold.

Temperatures have started to respond now, probably due to the cloud and have now climbed to -3.8c but all in all, a lovely winters morning.

  7. Cloud increasing in the west and a line of showers have drifted in from the Irish Sea.

Yes the satelite is showing a narrow line of showers heading across the Merseyside Area towards Cheshire.

Much to far south for me but interesting for those in that neck of the woods.

There is a fair clump of precipitaion now showing across ROI which looks to be heading our way; would that be the first signs of the front for overnight tonight or enhanced shower activity ahead of it.

  8. Yes, hopefully our altitude will help a lot, they are currently gritting like mad, I can hear the gritters being loaded from my house!!

Yes I was out earlier and the roads, certainly side roads are quite icy from all of the recent rain.

I'm surprised that they are filling the gritters as every time I pass one they never seem to be spreading salt just flashing lights to give the impression.

  9. Bit of a difference between the warnings out.

NW are giving the chances of snow across the width of Northern England but Met O. place the emphasis more towards the east and north east.

Who will end up closer to the correct outcome; onlt time will tell but in both cases I think altitude will play a major role.

Drop in temperature has slowed down here...........now at -1.3c

  10. I think the east lancs have a good chance of seeing some frontal edge snow tomorrow, but don't get your hopes up!

This time last night i'd have agreed BT but after the overnight non event I 'm not so sure.

That said though, the temperatures are certainly playing their part as it now -0.3 and currently dropping at a rate of about 1c every 20 minutes

Should be the coldest night of the period tonight.

  11. Apparently it is snowing in Preston so says a friend living up there.

    no it must be dandruff

always thought Tesco's own brand wasn't a patch on Head and Shoulders

seriously I hope it is snowing because we are 30 miles further inland and 900 feet asl higher than Preston

  12. Yes it's been foggy here since this morning, got gradually worse through the day, not any better now out there, very dense.

went to Bury from home earlier this evening and left a clear starry night for thick fog

came home and left thick fog for a clear starry night again

its amazing what a couple of hundred feet of altitude can do when it comes to fog

we had some early this morning but since about 9am it's been clear.

  13. Thanks southpennines 88! I used to live in Linthwaite-at about 120-130m ASL?? High enough up for snow there & rain in Huddersfield town centre. However, on driving up to the A640 trans-pennine road I pass where I now live-& it was at that rough point that very wet snow/sleet turned to proper snow...so heres hoping!!!!!!!! Southpennine 88-do you think the higher areas like Holme Moss will deffo have a covering? I have a new digital camera that I can't wait to use!

Altitude will obviously help places like Holme Moss, Snake Pass, Cat and Fiddle etc but I just can't see there being enough precipitation from this front to give more than a light covering at any altitude this far south.

One of the weather sites (can't remember the name of it has a warning for up to 8 inches of snow across central and eastern areas and over high ground in general but I think it would need some amazing turnaround to get at that sort of figure.

  14. Well north west weather are showing the smallest amount of PPN and all of it as rain but showing very low temps I don't know.

Diane Oxberry is a mild ramper; she won't talk about snow unless it's actually falling from the sky and going to be disruptive and even then It's a word she struggles with.

TBH though, I can't see there being much in the way of snow across the NW region overnight.

Possibly a covering over the tops but nothing much to speak of so on this occasion maybe she's right but there again she probably mad as hell because she can't say "at least it will be mild"

  15. Yes, a weak system moved south-eastwards overnight on the 1st/2nd December 2008 and gave pretty widespread snowfall over northern England, though many areas had just a dusting. By the time it got down to Norwich (where I was at the time) it was just rain, with a bit of sleet mixed in on the south-facing flank.

That system was then followed by a frontal snowfall in the NE on the 4th December, and the chart for this coming Monday bears similarities but it looks like the snow will be over with more quickly- probably a spell of snow overnight Sunday/Monday but back to rain by daybreak on Monday.

If i'm not mistaken the frontal fall on the 4th gave us about 6 inches of wet snow which was quite a suprise when I went outside to work that morning.

I believe areas further north than ourselves towards the Yorkshire Dales got even more.

TWS was this not followed by a threat of a fall of biblical proportions with severe warnings out but then it went the way of the pear right at the last moment.

  16. Well, someone looking to navigate the Huddersfield Narrow Canal today might be disappointed as it has remained frozen today as well as the locks.

Let's hope it thaws out soon.

Milder but wetter weather looking probable Monday before fluctuating temperatures kick in

TBH I think it looks to be an interesting week coming up.

Unsettled Atlantic spell with coolish uppers could give some surprises to the region in the coming days.

I think that the Pennines, Lakes, NY Moors etc will always be favourite for settling snow but I wouldn't rule out some at lower levels, esspecially if a NW airflow pushes showers into Merseyside and through the Cheshire gap.

I don't think for one minute we are talking disruptive snow but it could start to look just a little festive as we start December and one bonus is that Diane Oxberry won't be saying "at least it will be mild" much in the coming days.

Anyway welcome to Net Weather SouthPennine88

  17. Lucky you. It was frosty and brightish first thing in south Manc, but has steadily fogged up since then. Temp wobbled up from -1 to 2ish, now back down to 1C. Visibility below 250m in Trafford Park. Looks like a similar story at the airport.

As i said earlier, this mornings fog was quite unusual up here.

We get plenty of crap weather but not much fog.
