Significant Snow/Freezing Rain Risk - 9-10th February
Bristawl Si replied to Cheese Rice's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
It was pretty accurate for the snow event on Sat/Sun though TEITS - didn't really waver much in the 36 hours up to its arrival Ian F on our local Beeb forecast right now - snow running thru' Oxford, Glos and into BTL area, SE Wales, North Somerset, Wilts - coming from the Midlands - around midnight thru to Friday morning (all morning Friday as well)- 747 replies

Well, you can probably guess from the number of times the Bristol and West Country crowd refer to our local Beeb man, Ian Fergusson - his forecasts are a great mix of technical and easy to understand - IMO he has it spot on for ensuring he's not bamboozling those who like their forecasts simple and enough technical stuff to satisfy those of us who don't like a forecast dumbdowned too much. And thru' his twitter account he's always answering and giving updates. An ever increasing legend in these parts. -

Ian F v positive this evening on his twitter account for our area, esp NE of the West Country - if the high res model at Meto is to be believed one would imagine the sweet spot to be the SW Midlands - Cotswolds into Oxfordshire. I'm sure things will change come this time tom. NAE at 9.15 this eve should be interesting- 747 replies

Winter 2011/12 - General Discussion
Bristawl Si replied to Paul's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
The main feature in Bristol and some parts of the West Country has been the lack of snow days - having checked on the Met Office site yday our part of the world, in an AVERAGE winter, gets between 8 and 14 snow days. - Obviously the top end of that scale applies to the Moors and the far NE of our region into Wilts and the Cotswolds part of Glos. But in BTL we've had one snow day. So even for this winter to turn out 'average' we need a lot of snow days between now and end March. -

Teased by whom, though? A number of genuine 'experts', plus a whole host of others who like to think they're experts! Actually the first 6 days of February have been pretty cold, but not extreme cold (although a few nightime temps have been v cold). I think most members who want cold, more than anything want snow - i know i do - at the mo this winter, here in Bristol, is approaching the crappy status of the 90s' and noughties' winters. -

Not at all LS - this winter in Bristol is ranking as pretty bad in terms of cold and snow - easily comparable with the mild winters of the late 90s/early noughties. We've had 2 hours of snow - that's it so far. And one week of cold, below average temps.

Looks like another crappy, boring week ahead on the winter weather front - this is going down as a bad winter and easily comparable to the ones of the late 90s/early noughties. Did you know that an 'average' winter in our neck of the woods brings 6 to 7 snowdays with snow lying? (according to METO stats) -

Some people are easily pleased. LOL  Even in an average winter we'd have 6 or 7 snow days in the south west. Today's snow was OKish but remember the last 3 winters - not long winters, granted, but some pretty special snowfalls - obviously not a patch on 78, 79, 81, 87, 91 - Let's hope today is the start of a snowy February. E Anglia, just to the north of London and the SE are getting an absolute pasting at the mo- 615 replies

This one is ranking as one of the worst in terms of cold and snow here in BTL - maybe the next few weeks will turn that around.
