I thought this was Storm Olivia??

Local forecast for Blackpool is...

20240404_122126.thumb.jpg.5cef1cdaa977efe1630a76c34d65fb08.jpg

(Which has risen from max gust of 32 in the last half hour!!)

Whereas yellow warning states..

A deep area of low pressure, will bring a spell of very windy weather to parts of western Britain and Northern Ireland this weekend. Gusts of 50 mph are expected quite widely on Saturday, while some exposed spots, particularly on the coast, will see 60 to 70 mph gusts with large waves also likely.

matty40s I think Friday's low is called Olivia, named by the Portuguese.  Saturday is a different deep low,  please anyone correct me if I'm wrong.   Are you visiting the NW this weekend then?

Think it's the same low. There's a standard low pressure which gets absorbed later Friday by Saturdays storm.  I think it has been named twice then.

So the Irish met is naming a storm for bog standard gale force winds. There is nothing on the charts which suggests this should be classed as a named storm but here we are.

I think I'll start naming "storms" myself , providing something a little more commensurate with likely impacts imby ..  Kathleen shall thus be named  "The Cherry Blossom Shredder"

StingJet she'll do nothing in this corner, we'll have warmth from the south, can't wait.

Geordiesnow Don't really get the argument. Looks potentially quite impactful in the west of Ireland which is part of their jurisdiction.

A bit like me saying the Netherlands MO shouldn't name a North Sea storm because it will have no impact in Dublin 🤔

 The Eagle

Is the odd gust of up to 60 to 70mph in exposed coastal spots really justifies a storm being named? I would agree if trees are in full leaf and it's the first storm of the season but we are getting so soft we really are.

For the majority of Ireland, it will be nothing more than a windy day, the infamous crisp packet flying in the wind.

Geordiesnow you have a point to a degree, but rules are rules and 80mph in exposed parts of Northwest Ireland means it gets a name! It is a proper storm over sea tonight though when it really ramps up for a while!!

Also you have kids maybe out camping, mobile parks open for Easter. You get a lot of that in April which could be dangerous

Quick check of wind speeds show them to be well down on forecast values so either weaker than forecast or running later than forecast

It's still Easter Holidays for some, the end of the school hols for others, so people travelling or wanting to get out and do stuff. Highlighting the unusual gales and high gusts for Ireland and parts of the UK will be the main push here.

A windy weekend. There will be more rain but Storm Kathleen is mostly about gales and gusts. Saturday brings a bonus bit of warmth for part of the UK.

After a snowy start in Scotland this morning, turning milder and increasingly windy into the weekend as Storm Kathleen arrives to our west, bringing gales and rain to the west and warm air further east. Temperatures...

Peak gust here 49 mph winds have now dropped. XCweather has another spell of stronger winds overnight but S direction so won't effect us then another slight increase tomorrow morning. Neither of these are reflected in the local forecast but the local forecast timings were out even though it got the top speed right so who knows what tomorrow brings.
